The Bridge Waterfront Bistro – Mastering The Art Of Casual Fine Dining in Ponte Vedra

Thursday, December 10th, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | 3 Comments »

art-walk

Members of the Jacksonville TasteCasting team recently spent a memorable evening at The Bridge Waterfront Bistro – a casual fine dining oasis in toney Ponte Vedra.

You know the kind of experience where everything just clicks into place?  Delicious dishes, convivial hosts, excellent service and great conversation – it’s the way they converge that set The Bridge apart.

The restaurant has been in operation for just a few years and seems to have struck just the right mix of  beach-town casual – as befits its waterfront location, and white tablecloth elegance.

john

On the evening of or tasting it was clear chef/owner John Cakmis and his wife, co-owner Jill Gustafson-Cakmis aimed to please, and they hit the mark. Both spent time with us at table, when there was clearly a lot of work to be done in the kitchen.

Every time this  writer has dined at The Bridge, the chef or his wife have made an appearance to ensure that our dining experience was enjoyable. Many of their employees have been with them for years, and watching them work together they seem like a close-knit family.

After guiding one of our tasters in via GPS (the sizable restaurant is dwarfed by the massive SR 210 bridge over the intracoastal waterway) our tasting began with lovely crusty bread from the amazing French Pantry bakery, served with  olive oil and herbs for dipping (or slathering), beverages and a medley of salads / appetizers.

They’ve got a decent wine list with something for every price-point, but another  popular choice was the evening’s special Sangria, with white peaches, nectarines, peaches, apples, oranges in a blend of pinot grigio, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and brandy. There are nightly martini specials as well, and happy hour specials in the bar most nights.

For years before John and Jill opened The Bridge, this space housed a popular “fish camp” style restaurant, and even with lots of clean up / brighten up work to the decor, the property still retains that rustic charm that is the hallmark of a really good waterfront restaurant. The open kitchen is bustling, and glass  cases gleam with impressive whole fish and shellfish.

oysters

Salads included the Fried Oyster BLT – salad greens with a  spicy Caesar dressing, and tomatowedges, with a crown of applewood smoked bacon and crispy fried oysters. This dish alone or paired with a cup of soup would make a delightful and satisfying meal.

The Avocado and Lump Crabmeat salad fills a perfectly ripe avocado half with a generous pile of lemon dressed jumbo lump crab. Tomato slices at the peak of ripeness are drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette – lending acidity and visual appeal.

crab-app

Crawfish Spring Rolls are a crawfish spring rollspopular appetizer and have been on the menu since day one. Crispy wonton wrappers with a tasty crawfish filling, served with a wowza Asian dipping sauce.

gumbo-web

Word to the wise – not to take anything away from these apps, but  if you go save room for the Cajun Bayou Gumbo ($6 – cup $9 – bowl, $12 – entree).

Full flavored, dark and delicious, this is the real deal.  Stuffed with crawfish tail, shrimp, sausage and fresh, tender fish, it transported one taster back to memories of growing up along the Apalachicola River.  If there is better gumbo anywhere in Jacksonville or the Beaches, I’ve not tasted it. Even knowing we still had entrees and desserts coming our way, we savored every last morsel.

The arrival of our entrees was timed perfectly, and the assortment put before us boggled our minds! Where to start?

Fish at the Bridge is locally sourced, diver shot fresh. Shellfish is in abundance locally, and it shows up in many of the offerings.  The chef delighted in explaining that “you can get any fish wth any dish – it’s all good.” They also proudly serve Certified Angus Beef

grouper-eleni

On this night, Chargrilled Grey Grouper Eleni was topped with fresh local shrimp and mushrooms in a lemon herb butter sauce, served with roasted red potato wedges and sauteed spinach.

scallops-jkPan seared tender sweet Jumbo  Scallops were served with sauteed spinach and roasted red potatoes, topped with a citrus beurre blanc. These are on their dinner menu for $23 – and the value is outstanding.

Athena Chicken Pasta ($17) is a generous portion of chopped chicken breast sauteed with artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, basil and garlic in a white wine and lemon sauce, served over linguini and topped with feta.pasta athena rt

The Mediterranean influence was evident in the perfectly seasoned and chargrilled Greek Lamb Chops. ($27).

Chef Cakmis is Greek, and his Lamb Chops are one of many tributes to that heritage.

His passion for his craft, his staff, purveyors, and their clientele came through loud and clear with every word, and it echoed on every plate.

lamb-jk

snapper-new-orleansNothing could have prepared us for the Snapper New Orleans.  Delicate Red Snapper (it was still legal to fish for it at the time of our visit) topped with plenty of jumbo lump crabmeat, in a lemon butter sauce with a roasted red potatoes and vegetable medley.

I’ve lived at the coast most of my life, and I have never had fish so perfectly cooked. Moist, tender with the delicate flavor of the sea, this fish was so fresh and so well prepared we were literally speechless as we sampled it.  Words were superfluous, but some wild tweeting was definitely taking place. This preparation is featured on the menu with Grouper – but if they have it, splurge on the Snapper. There are plenty of varieties, so if Red isn’t being fished, just ask the chef  to recommend a substitute – he won’t steer you wrong.

bread pudding

For dessert – and who knew we had room for it even – there was a humbly offered bread pudding – luscious and sweet, sitting in a vibrant pool of Whiskey Hard Sauce and topped with crunchy toasted chopped pecans. This dish is a little like the restaurant itself – deceptively simple and low-key on the outside, but upon tasting you get that you are in for some seriously good food.

Jill has perfected the recipe after years of featuring it on the menu at the Bridge. There might be other dessert options, but this is what I’ll be eating next time I go. Provided I’ve saved room that is.

Aside from the large main dining area, there are several other little spaces tucked away – some indoor, some outdoors. Most have a stellar view of the intracoastal and the veritable parade of boats gliding by.

table-viewOur tasting was an evening event, so the water wasn’t visible but the  trunks of palms lent a soft glow to the ambiance.

It’s easy to lose track of time here. Before we knew it, three hours had slipped by. We were the only diners left in the previously busy main dining room. To our hosts’ credit, we were oblivious of that fact as we hung on every word, savored and shared every dish that came to the table, each more impressive than the one before.

An arrangement with the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra provides local artists with another setting in which to showcase their work, and The Bridge donates their percentage of any sales back to the Cultural Center – so diners get to view beautiful art, the local artists gain exposure with The Bridge’s clientele, and the CC at PVB benefits. On this evening, the work of local artist  Gordon Meggison graced the walls and lined the halls.

yogaberry – Mandarin

counter-web

Jacksonville Florida boasts a fairly temperate climate throughout the fall – and the late November night of our TasteCasting visit to yogaberry in Mandarin was a fair example of just that – evening temps in the low 70s greeted the steady stream of customers who shared the urge to splurge on some healthy fresh frozen yogurt – with an organic twist!

bright-wall

Our group included some new tasters, one of whom brought along her toughest critic – her four year old daughter!  The charming bright decor and complimentary wifi set  the stage for our fun evening of tasting.

yogaberry Mandarin Store Manager Carrie Walters greeted our team and showed us what sets her store apart from some of the other yogaberry locations – first off – the store is HUGE! So much seating area!

outdoors

There is even more seating outdoors in a little courtyard area. Then – and this is the kicker – they have a DRIVE THROUGH! yo – to go! How convenient is that?

The only downside to the drive through is that you miss out on the fun, bright space, and seeing all those lovely colorful toppings on display!  Still, a nice big cup of yogaberry with your favorite toppings would be just as enjoyable while you are curled up on the sofa watching your favorite classic holiday movie! Mmmm – Green Tea for the Grinch?

yogazThe yogurt is the star at yogaberry – the original is a clean, fresh, not too sweet, not too sour, FAT FREE soft serve frozen yogurt – with an organic twist! It’s made with organic milk, real fruit, and no artificial sweeteners. The featured yogurt flavors change weekly. Popular flavors include: Original Chocolate Banana Taro Coconut Strawberry Green Tea.

toppingsbar-webToppings include fresh fruit, candies, nuts, coconut, mochi, even cereal. In fact there was a whole discussion about cereal on yogurt – someone in our group was excited about the fruity pebbles – and let’s just say it WASN’T the four year old! :^)

Another taster was equally jazzed to have some cinnamon toast crunch for her cinnamon (another holiday special) yogurt.

Even the Jax team captain admits to having a thing for Cap’n Crunch, and is planning to try it out on the original yogurt very soon.

cup serveOne taster was very pleased indeed to find Taro flavored yogurt – it reminded her of her childhood in Hawaii. Discovering that they have little balls of Mochi (Japanese sticky rice cakes) as a topping put her over the moon.

Seriously – we were all like kids in a candy store. It’s the magic of yogaberry! The fruits are equally impressive – fresh cut mango called one taster’s name, berries and pineapple, banana all looked amazing too.

But the fun didn’t stop there – Carrie had another surprise in store for us – custom frozen yogurt cakes! These are available with 72 hours notice, and they include your choice of two yogurt flavors and two toppings.  We tasted a chocolate and peppermint yogurt cake with white chocolate chips inside and chocolate chips on top.

custom-yogurt-cake

As you can imagine – the combo of the peppermint and chocolate was sweet and refreshing.  The consistency of the yogurt in the cake is harder than the usual yogaberry soft serve, so the slices come out clean.

The peppermint yogurt was made specially for the holidays – so it won’t necessarily always be available. If you want a cake for a party or special occasion, call the store AT LEAST 72 hours in advance so they can have it ready for you.

Feel like a smoothie? They’ve got those too! yogaberry serves coffee and tea drinks as well.

antrel-and-nisha

The yogaberry staff are friendly and helpful – service is great! We so enjoyed our time there, we’re considering making yogaberry one of our regular meeting spots.  Will tweet for sweets!

Mingle at the Wine Cellar – Jacksonville

Thursday, November 19th, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | No Comments »

Wine Cellar proprietor Vicki Dugan recently hosted a team of tasters for a Jacksonville TasteCasting event at Mingle – an intimate lounge.

mingle-web

As you can see, the space is lovely.  If you know anything about Jacksonville’s Wine Cellar restaurant, you know it is beautiful – the gracious and tastefully designed decor is reminiscent of a French country chateau. Rooms are divided but in view of one another, lending architectural interest while maintaining a sense of intimacy.

ahi-tunaMingle, the small, semi-private lounge area near the front of the restaurant, is no exception.

Visible from the bar area, the space seats six comfortably. There is a flatscreen tv overhead so you never need to miss a game – or in our case, a cooking show!

Our TasteCasting team agreed it would be a nice place to host a business reception or make a presentation. The room can be reserved for small parties or receptions. A special menu is available in the lounge, as well as selections from the full bar.

Our tasting began with Lightly Seared Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Creme Fraiche, served with pickled ginger, capers and red onion, toast points and a ponzu dipping sauce. 7.

The tuna was soft and silky, and the classic components of the dish came together to form a perfect light starter.

Pictures---Interior-031The next dish was served to us by its creator – Chef Mark Peters.

The Southwest Chicken Napoleon takes the familiar flavors and textures of Southwestern cuisine, and reinvents them in a way that is both classic and playful.

“Intricate” was the word we settled on to describe the balanced layers of crispy fried flour tortilla discs – layered with chicken, corn, peppers, red onion, cilantro and finished with a roasted red pepper oil and avocado coulis - 7.

The dish was amazingly full flavored yet light and crisp. We were treated to tasting portions, the pic here is of the full sized dish. This was the flavorful favorite of at least one taster.

Finally, Mingle offers a host of Individual Pizzas – based on a homemade rosemary flatbread crust, baked to perfection and served arranged in star points around a small seasonal salad.

riser-area

We tasted one slice of each pizza:

Tomatoes, Fresh Mozzarella, Basil Oil    6.

Smoked Salmon, Boursin Cheese
Scallions, Dill, Capers    8.

Shrimp, Basil Pesto, Sun Dried Tomatoes
Red Onion, Mozzarella Cheese, Basil Oil    8.

Chicken, Monterey Jack, Cheddar Cheese
Roasted Garlic, Red Onion
Smoked Barbecue Sauce    7.

Italian Sausage, Mozzarella Cheese
Roasted Red Peppers, Marinara Sauce    6.

The evening’s selections were a perfect sampling from one of Jacksonville’s longest standing fine dining establishments.

We hope to return soon to sample some of the restaurant’s entree selections! Stay tuned and make your reservation to Mingle for the holidays!

yogaberry – an organic twist!

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | 2 Comments »

When Jennifer Turner invited the Jacksonville TasteCasting team to sample yogaberry – frozen yogurt with an organic twist – at their St Johns Town Center location, we jumped at the opportunity. yogaberry is a relative newcomer to the frozen yogurt scene, but already the smooth, fresh texture and bright, clean flavors have won our hearts.  Only two days after our TasteCasting visit, the cravings have begun!

jennifer turner

Jennifer and her husband (then fiancee) Mark opened the Ponte Vedra store in April 2008, and just over a year later there are five yogaberry locations – and two more on the way! Franchises opportunities are available, so if you’re reading this and wishing there was  a yogaberry near you, give them a call!

OK- enough about the business!

Let’s talk yogurt!

First, pick your flavor – the original is a clean, fresh, not too sweet, not too sour, FAT FREE soft serve frozen yogurt – with an organic twist!

Did I mention it’s FAT FREE? It’s made with organic milk, real fruit, and no artificial sweeteners.

The night we visited the choices were:

Chocolate

Banana

Taro

Coconut

Strawberry

Another top seller is  Green Tea – tried that last week – it is fantastic too!

Toppings include fresh fruits, granola, cereals, nuts and candies.

All the fruit is cut fresh daily.

tops fruitsWe were given a taste of each flavor, and then chose our favorites for a full serving.

Organic berries were tempting, but this taster’s tropical topping of choice was fresh mango on coconut yogurt.

Taro with almonds looked amazing too, and our newest TasteCasting team member chose the decadent chocolate.

City Kidz Ice Cream Cafe

Sunday, October 25th, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | 1 Comment »

At first glance, City Kidz is an ice cream shop.  But step inside, and if you can look past the Breyer’s Ice Cream sign and the frozen goodness staring you down, you’ll see the real deal – City Kids makes some seriously good gourmet sandwiches too.  Lunch is lookin’ up in Springfield.

Pastsan menuor Clinton Bush and his lovely wife (and City Kids C.O.O.) Sonya treated our TasteCasting team to a lively evening in Springfield.  Their obvious passion for their food, the business, and one another made for a truly memorable time.

We started out TasteCasting visit with a  Shrimp Cocktail –  extra-large “Two-Bite” shrimp served with cocktail sauce. (1/2 dozen $7 – dozen for $14).  shrimp cocktailSome pretty good shrimp at a good price. Who says you have to go to the beach to get good seafood in Jax? Case in point:

Anthony Lump Crabcake Sandwich – served with a side of Seafood Macaroni Salad. ($7)  A great crabcake – brimming with Chesapeake Bay blue crab, very little if any filler, sweet and delicate crabmeat, organic lettuce and tomato, served on a sesame seed bun with the chef’s special sauce -  that little extra Ooomph in the sauce – that’ll be the Cognac. Seriously good stuff.

crab cakePastor Bush generously shared his unique recipe for this and many of his special creations.

His passion for creating the best possible experience for the guests at City Kidz was evident throughout the evening.

He and Sonya both shared generously of their time and talked us through the whole City Kidz philosophy – Executive chef inspired recipes mixed with some freestyle home cooking, lots of smiling faces, warm greetings and some great food cooked and delivered at the peak of freshness. Seriously. If you order the Chicken and Waffles, don’t expect to take it to go. You’ve got to eat that while it’s hot and crisp, not let it steam in styrofoam for five minutes!

You’re only getting the peak of freshness here.  Everything is made to order – nothing is left under a warming light.

wall

Pastor Bush has some real characters working at City Kidz – Anthony the Lump Crabcake, Mango Manny, Boxxey Box, Shuga Shug, Sonya the Tropical Storm,  Wally Waffle, Al-Yassa the Veggie Sandwich and Cee Kay- all  registered trademark and copyright of  Clinton Bush, Anthony B. Miles and Sonya Fleshman Bush.

But the real character of the place comes through in the friendly and generous natures of everyone at City Kidz – they seem to know they have something special here, and they want you to have a good time AND a good meal.

chick sld paniniNext up was the Chicken Salad Panini. Finely chopped all-white chicken breast is expertly seasoned and dressed – with organic lettuce and tomato, nuts and raisins (optional, but go for it) on specially made panini bread – grilled when you’re ready for it, not a moment before.  Served with a side of chips – for $5.75! – it’s a big sandwich – you’ll want to eat the whole thing though.

Stuffed though we were – dessert was in our immediate future. Trust me, do not skip dessert at City Kidz.  I hear the Mango Guava Cheesecake is especially satisfying.

Pastor Bush practically tormented us with this insider scoop – there’s a new pastry dessert coming to City Kidz – something he tells us has not been seen or done in Jax before! What could THAT be? We’re still waiting to find out – stay tuned to their website – and listen to the adorable “City Kidz” song while you are there….

wally waffle Wally Waffle Sundae ($6.99) – is a homemade Belgian waffle topped with two scoops of ice cream, toppings and sauces of your choice. We had Pastor Bush choose our flavors for us – and he loaded us up with Butter Almond and Sara Lee Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream scoops, with chocolate and caramel sauces, whipped cream, cherries and nuts.

It was a lot of ice cream and toasty waffle goodness – and it more than satisfied our four tasters as a shared treat. We all agreed we’ll have to come back to try a scoop in their delicious looking pretzel cone!

pastor bushCity Kidz also makes several varieties of fresh-baked-to-order cookies.  Call the cafe a minimum of 25 minutes before pick-up. Cookies are $1 each, 2 for $1.50, 6 for $4.95 or $9.95 per dozen.  They come specially  boxed and ready to enjoy.

City Kidz is in the beautiful new 3rd & Main building in the Springfield area of Jacksonville. There is seating indoors or outside under umbrellas to shade the afternoon sun. The evening we visited, smooth jazz music filled the air and set the mood for our tasting.

The combination of chef-quality recipes with home cooking and genuinely passionate people puts City Kidz in a class all its own.  Pastor Bush and Sonya are a great addition to the Jacksonville foodie community. Make sure you visit soon!

bb’s – a groovy place to b

Sunday, September 13th, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | 4 Comments »

bb's on hendricks stJacksonville’s new TasteCasting team recently assembled at one of Jacksonville’s Top 25 restaurants  and perennial favorite – bb’s – where we were treated to a four course tasting menu – courtesy of owners Barbara and Karin. Our host for the evening was Executive Chef Carlos Ramirez.

Originally from Columbia and trained at Johnson and Wales, Chef Ramirez’ prowess in the kitchen is matched by his attentiveness to the restaurant’s clientele. He spent a great deal of time with our TasteCasting team, thoroughly describing each dish as it was presented and answering all of our questions.

tastecasting-at-bbs

We were treated as honored guests, and we are grateful for the special attention paid to our group by of one of Jacksonville’s premier chefs.

To begin our tasting we were treated to a Shrimp Bisque – creamy and sweet like shrimp fresh from the sea, with just enough heat.

bisque-w-menu

Next up was an assortment of salads. bb’s is one of Jacksonville’s power lunch spots, and their salads are a local favorite.

Mediterranean Chicken Salad  boasts  shredded white meat of chicken on a bed of greens, with tender haricots vert, briny kalamata olives, sweet grape tomatoes, tangy, full flavored feta cheese and a bright, light lemon herb vinaigrette.

pan asian chopchop

Pan Asian Chop Chop Salad is a study in contrasting tastes and textures – field greens with juicy grilled chicken, macadamia nuts, pickled ginger, rice noodles, sweet soy, wasabi drizzle and sesame ginger vinaigrette

salmon salad

Grilled Salmon Salad reminded us of autumn – chargrilled salmon served on a bed of greens over a dried fruit and nut couscous, and topped with a dollop of pumpkinseed pesto.goat-cheese-salad

A personal favorite is the Goat Cheese Salad – Field greens are tossed with sweet slivers of Medjool dates, candied walnuts and strips of Black Forest ham. Warm, tangy goat cheese is nestled in thickly sliced toasted baguette and drizzled with honey.

Crispy Fried Rock Shrimp salad was dressed with tangerine cream and a lemon herb vinaigrette. The sweet little shrimp were studded with black sesame seeds.

chicken-sofrito

The entrees showcased a range of flavor profiles, while bringing into focus the Chef’s Latin heritage.  Sofrito Spiced Half Chicken was earthy and filling. Topped with fried onions and served with saffron rice pilaf, baby spinach, and drizzled with mojo infused aioli.

skirtsteak

One taster’s Char grilled skirt steak was perfectly cooked – it came with chorizo whipped potatoes, roasted plum tomato, caramelized onions and cilantro chimichurri  She was quite taken with the addition of chorizo to the whipped potatoes. A simple pairing – almost instinctive – and brilliantly executed. Subtle touches like these define the bb’s experience.

wahoo

Grilled Wahoo was topped with parmesan-peppercorn crust and served alongside a lighter than air sweet corn and shrimp fritter and haricots verte.  Arugula-lemon pesto and white truffle aioli elevated the dish to something truly memorable.

celentani

Cellentani pasta was perfectly cooked and sauced with a rustic pomodoro, studded with clams, spicy Italian sausage, onions and zucchini, and finished with dollops of goat cheese.

One benefit to tasting size portions is that we got this far and still had room for dessert!

dessert case bbs

There is something for everyone in the dessert case at bb’s and sister restaurant Biscottis.  There are ten to sixteen dessert selections on any given day, and the selection changes hourly.

Their desserts are widely considered to be some of the best in town. Desserts like these are an obligatory indulgence.

We enjoyed tasting portions of a few of the most popular selections. It is worth noting – the pictures here are not indicative of the actual portion diners receive. Dessert portions are ample, and sharing is encouraged.

carrot cakeAmong the selections the night we visited:

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Cake

PeanutButter Mousse Cake

Cappucino Mousse Cake

The Classic Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting was a team favorite. Incredibly moist, dense and flavorful.

chocolate cake

bb’s Chocolate Truffle Cake is legendary – this taster recommends a jammy Cabernet to sip along with it.

breads

It would be easy to overlook the Croissant Bread Pudding with all the fancy   cakes and tortes beckoning from behind the gleaming dessert case, but do yourself a favor and try it next time you’re there. It is worth every calorie. Our tasters kept coming back to it, even after tasting just about every offering in the dessert case!

bb’s is consistently voted one of the top 25 best restaurants in Jacksonville by numerous local publications, and has received the wine spectator ‘award of excellence’ year after year.

They boast an award winning wine list with over 50 wines by the glass, many $7 and under, and a full bar – they make fab martinis and mojitos! They have catering and take-out menus as well.

bbs-ext

Also worth noting is bb’s Brunch menu – served Saturdays 11am – 2pm

A big, warm Thank You to Barbara and Karin, the staff at bb’s, and especially Chef Carlos Ramirez.

bb’s truly is a groovy place to b!

MORTON’S The Steakhouse – Bar Bites Menu

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 | Posted in Jacksonville | 2 Comments »

Jacksonville’s Power Tweeters Met For Power Hour!

Jacksonville’s TasteCasting team came on like gangbusters at our inaugural tasting – at MORTON’S The Steakhouse no less!

Twittertini

Twittertini

A fine way to spend a blustery evening – in the lap of luxury. Once inside the comfortably appointed restaurant we were greeted by Morton’s own Mary Sue Mulhern. The private party room was tastefully appointed with thoughtful flourishes just for us, complete with custom menus, goodie bags and Morton’s signature napkin fold -impressive all on its own! An impressive group of fifteen tasters made for a fun and social first night out for the Jacksonville team.

The crew at Morton’s even went so far as to design a signature drink for the occasion -

The Twittertini - blue like twitter, refreshing like you wouldn’t believe!

We were treated to a full sampling of their “Bar Bites” menu, available in the bar from 5 PM until close. They call it “Power Hour” – Happy Hour done right!

Mary Sue welcomed us and introduced us to Drew, our server for the evening. That’s when the food started coming out.  Tray after tray, this team of talented tasters plowed through the entire Bar Bites lineup – snapping pics, posting and tweeting away as we tasted each dish.

The room was lit for atmosphere, not for photography, but our tasters weren’t deterred by that. Flashes flaring must have made the folks in the dining room wonder what was up behind those frosted glass doors. Pictures here are courtesy of team member and professional photographer Bassel Jadaa.

Iceberg Wedge Bites

Iceberg Wedge Bites

Iceberg Wedge Bites were crisp little rounds of iceberg lettuce piled with chopped hard-boiled egg, creamy blue cheese dressing and topped with diced fresh tomato and crispy bacon crumbles. Classic steakhouse fare, downsized for Bar Bites presentation.

They were cool, creamy, crisp and delicious, but we knew we had to pace ourselves…

Mini Jumbo Lump Crac Lunchpoom can

Miniature Crab Cakes

Miniature Crab Cakes earned high marks. Our excellent and knowledgeable server Drew shared with us that they make them with premium jumbo lump blue crab meat,  flavored with sautéed onion, garlic and parsley, just a little breadcrumb and  seasoning mixture, moistened with just enough mustard mayo sauce and egg to bind them.  Then they are baked, not fried. They tasted of sweet, soft blue crab and butter,

These delicious morsels come three to an order for $5 – and Drew tells us an order is the same amount as one of the regular sized crab cakes – which sells for $14 on the appetizer menu in the restaurant. Do the math, dude.

POWER HOUR ROCKS ON…

Chicken Goujonette and Prime Cheeseburger

Chicken Goujonette

Chicken Goujonettes were next up – crispy fried chicken strips, served warm with a mustard mayonnaise sauce. The moist, tender white meat chicken held together whether you attacked it with a fork or went the finger food route. With chicken this tasty, we could only imagine how great the beef was going to be!

Prime Cheeseburgers

Prime Cheeseburgers

Prime Cheeseburgers – These were a big hit – and they packed a huge flavor punch.  Chopped Prime Rib steak, decked out in mini burger buns with the works. They come three to an order on the Bar Bites menu.

A cold beer and three of these babies would make a nice pairing!

Our new TasteCasting team enjoyed the opportunity to meet one another, and fascinating conversations were cropping up in every corner. Our patient server Drew happily repeated ingredient lists and cooking methods for each table as asked, and kept the service moving along at just the right pace to accommodate our tweeting, eating and repeating.

Drew!

Drew - Posing For The Paparazzi

Not that we really needed more food at this point, but the fun had really just begun!

Jumbo Lump Crab, Spinach & Artichoke Dip was warm, rich and creamy, with the tangy artichoke acting as foil to the sweet soft lump crabmeat.  Served with seasoned toast points, it was scooped up in no time flat. Even the toast points got raves!

Blue Cheese French Fries

Blue Cheese French Fries

Blue Cheese French Fries came to the table family style – and were devoured despite the previous onslaught of delicious dishes. Fries were pleasantly crisp and the blue cheese piled high and oozing with goodness.

Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches were a fitting show-stopper. Drew explained that these are cut from the tail end of the filet and served with the same mustard mayonnaise in and accompanying them. The little finger length rolls were light and soft, and the meat was all that you would expect from a classic steakhouse like Morton’s. Simple, straightforward presentation meets high quality product.

Our culinary adventure could have ended there and we would have been more than satisfied. Morton’s is well aware, however, of their reputation for providing a memorable experience worthy of any special occasion.

Drew and his team were in stealth mode as they brought in the final offering – unannounced and quite unexpected.  Desserts at Morton’s are a big deal, we’ve come to discover.

Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Cake Bites

Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Cake Bites

Key Lime Pie was presented in tart form specially for us – diners ordinarily get a slice.

The hand-packed crumb crust was sweet, rich with butter. The filling was light and not at all cloyingly sweet like key lime pie can be. Their rendition is just light and sweet enough to be the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Morton’s Legendary Hot Chocolate Cake was downsized for the occasion as well, transformed into bite-sized bits of dense, warm semisweet chocolate cake.  Words don’t do it justice. You’ll have to go and try it for yourself.

Drink specials for Morton’s Power Hour include selected $4 beer, $5 wine, the radiant Morton’s Spritz for $6, and $7 Cosmo, Mojito, ‘Tini, and something called the “Palm Beacher” – which sounds like the tropics in a glass to us.

When it was all over we said our farewells, thanked Drew and the crew at Morton’s, and promised to be back for Power Hour some day soon.

A fitting beginning to TasteCasting in Florida’s First Coast – Jacksonville!  Special thanks to St John and Partners and to Morton’s for arranging the evening’s festivities.  Next Stop, Biscottis!
