One shop that lives up to its name: The Best Chocolate in Town

With a name like “The Best Chocolate in Town,” owner Elizabeth Garber had quite the reputation to live up to. Luckily for our TasteCasters (and Indianapolis residents), Garber’s shop at 880 Massachusetts truly does provide some of the best chocolately creations we’ve ever tasted. bcit-01

Upon walking into the shop our TasteCasters were greeted to the sweet smell of what was to come. The shop’s chocolatiers were pouring, mixing and molding the smooth ganache as Garber gave us a brief history of how she fell into the chocolate business.

An art major from a small liberal arts college in Michigan, Garber made chocolate treats out of her own home in her spare time. But soon the business took off and demand was so high that she made the move to quit her day job and work full time toward her goal of owning her own chocolate shop. Eleven years later, The Best Chocolate in Town has been successful enough to open up a second location in the Chase Tower. Their chocolates are sold at several stores and restaurants in Indianapolis including R Bistro, The Indiana State Museum and the Chatterbox Jazz Club. A full listing of where to find the yummy treats can be found on their Web site.bcit-02

After getting a history of the company, Garber started rolling out the goodies. Our first plate of truffles included traditional best-sellers and exotic new comers. We all agreed the chocolate chip cheesecake truffle was perfection – the smooth creamy filling with tiny chocolate chips inside had us all wishing we had seconds. The sea salt caramels were a surprising hit; the chunks of real sea salt cut the chocolate caramel sweetness, resulting in the same balance you might get from a chocolate covered pretzel. The Gorg (dark chocolate with gorgonzola cheese) had the group split. Some of enjoyed the sharp flavor of the cheese alongside the truffle, but others weren’t fans of mixing strong cheese and chocolate. Perhaps the most surprising treat of the day – The Jack Daniels BBQ truffle – was the most memorable. The crushed Kettle chips on top provided a nice crunch and the BBQ sauce and Jack Daniel’s liquor were milder than we initially thought. bcit-07

On round two we sampled the cinnamon basil truffle (smooth and just sweet enough – deemed the favorite by two of our TasteCasters), the Guinness truffle (just a hint of stout flavor), the rosemary truffle (this too had the crowd split), the fiery pepper truffle (a little too hot for a few of our TasteCasters but great for fans of the heat) and the white chocolate truffle.
