Great Northern Railway

Great Nothern Railway - DTC

Great Northern Railway in the Denver Tech Center, on 8101 E Belleview Ave.               303-770-4741(map).

Lunch is serverd everyday from kitchen open through 4:00 PM. Dinner is served from 4:00 PM through kitchen close.

Have You Seen This Place?

After getting off of I-25 & Belleview (exit #199), I began looking for Great Northern. Going about .2 of a mile I did go right past this restaurant the first time. It is surrounded by large hotels in the area and the building decor is not what I expected; colors of  purple with gold trimmed windows threw me off. Great Northern offers a large parking area, so finding a place to park is no problem. Now come on inside with me and let’s take a look at why locals love this place.

1020091740Stepping inside through the large revolving doors it feels as if you were stepping back into time. The Great Northern provides an atmosphere of excitement, with a casual environment. From the hand-crafted Mahogany bar, and  mahogany tables, leather booths, large chandeliers, and bold railroad graphics, all capture the feel of the Great Northern Railway.

J.J. Hill was a noted Canadian-American railroad executive. As chief executive officer of a family of lines headed by the Great Northern Railway, which served a substantial area of the Upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains, and Pacific Northwest. J.J. Hill’s grandson founded the Great Northern restaurant in 1998.

“The Great Northern, located in the heart of the Denver Tech Center, echos the journey of the Great Northern Railroad across the upper United States. Their menu reflects the traditional cuisine of these regions through interpretations of beloved trans-continental meals. An excellent wine list not only accompanies, but also accentuates, the menu.”

Once Inside Great Northern.

large dinning room

I began looking around the large dinning room area, in its center are comfortable tables with leather chairs, and along the walls are high-back leather booths. Leather boothsEach is set with an elegant table settings ready for lunch or dinner.

The decor is a classy railroad car scene out to please the paramount folks traveling aboard the Great Northern Railroad.

Hundreds of bottles wineThe Great Northern’s artistic selection on wine, offers Pinot Noirs and hearty Cabernets, to white wines and Chardonnays.

‘Award of Excellence’                                             Wine Spectator’s 2009, 2008 & 2007                  Offering excellent wines at affordable prices as well as a large assortment of allocated vintages, we are sure you will find something you will love.

meat smokerGreat Northern offers wood-fired smoked flavor on their meats. When I was there, there was a large chicken turning on the rotisserie. Having your meat wood-fired is an awesome flavor, and you get only the best served here. So come on in and take the time to relax and look around at all the cool things here. There is even real railroad rails that make up the foot rest, if you choose to sit at the bar.

There is a lot that Great Northern can offer you, from its classy dinning room to a great service staff, so come out for lunch or dinner, but be sure to check out the award winning selection of wine here and try a bottle for yourself.

The Denver TasteCasting team began tasting these dinner menu items, you can check out the whole online menu here.

Slide1

Denver ‘TasteCasting’ was invited to hold a special TasteCasting event for a local catering team, which was held  in the home of  local resident, Susan Almquist (Marketing Director & Event Planner for Party Stylings).

Upon our arrival, we were very excited to see what this talked up catering group could present to us. To my surprise they were really prepared for this occasion; with elegant table settings that included fancy silverware, wine glasses, and decorative shaped cloth napkins. We began our event out on the patio with drinks and appetizers being served by two wonderful hostess; while chef: Todd Koeplin, works on our meals.

0814091807a

We began this tasting outside on the patio and let me tell you it was just fabulous. Getting served drinks and appetizers out doors in the fresh air, along with meeting new friends was great. All of the appetizers were awesome and I have never tasted these before; they were a new treat for me.

We went inside to the dining area, it was so elegantly set. Each menu item was brought in for our picture taking then we were served a few different wines for each entree served. I loved what chef Todd could do with the duck; it was my absolute favorite entree for that evening. Afterwards came the deserts, a Flourless Chocolate Cake with Housemade Fruit Coulis, along with a Chocolate and Apricot Tiramisu. Both were wonderfully made.

Thank You Kimberly Kee & Susan Almquist, The owners of Party Stylings Catering Co., along with Top-Notch Chef Todd!

Siena at The Courtyard in Castle Rock

Sunday, August 9th, 2009 | Posted in Denver | No Comments »

SIENA AT THE COURTYARD.

Siena at The Courtyard in downtown Castle Rock is located at 333 Perry Street, Castle Rock, CO. 80104 (map).   Hours: Lunch: Monday – Friday from 11:30am to 2:00pm Happy Hour: Daily from 4:00pm to :30pm daily Dinner: 5pm to Close.

Siena is a casual Italian /American restaurant that features: brick –oven pizza, steak, seafood and pasta(eclectic menu). Start your visit off with a glass of wine. Siena’s wine list consists of 60 bottles of wine to choose from. Want to make your dining more romantic, have a glass of wine by their cozy fireplace.

“We began out tour through this elegant American / Italian restaurant, starting off by the lounge area; then we moved to the kitchen area. I was excited to see such a classy set up, that also includes  The outdoor patio nect to the Courtyard fountain. Now here is a very nice spot to sip on one of their 21 different martinis.”

OK, now I am anxious to begin this tasting. They choose this elegant Italian styled room to hold our event. The entrance was two replica styled pillars on each side, and paintings of horses on each wall. Soft lighting and a large dining table, makes for an excellent place for your family or business special occasions.

Our tasting began with four different, delightfully fresh and cool salads. Then Siena paired the salads with three amazingly looking and tasting Italian styled pizzas. My favorite pizza was the “Spicy 3 Meat” which offers salami, pepperoni, soppressata, pepperoncini, crushed red pepper and house sauce. We were also served; Margherita a classic, with fresh mozzarella, light tomato sauce and parmesan, Chicken and Artichoke with roasted chicken, boursin cheese, artichoke hearts & brushed with extra virgin olive oil.

Now here was a real treat for me. We dove into Siena’s Maine Mussels’with Colorado Sausage Factory spicy sausage, tomatoes, cilantro pesto, lime and poblano chiles. “Yum, Yum! Another one of my favorites again, was the wonderfully cooked ‘Crispy Calamari’with a spicy marinara and fresh basil aioli. “I cannot say one food item was over or undercooked, just perfect!”We were spoiled to five different entrees: Chicken Parmagiana,Grilled Forentine Steak, Mahi Mahi, Double Cut Pork Chop and Angel Hair Pasta. Along with great food they served six different wines. Each was hand picked from the General Manager, Mark Gilbert. After tasting each wine I can tell you, Mark knows how to pick’um!

Now for what I call the ‘Grand Finale’ I have listed Siena’s superior looking deserts: ‘Chocolate Tiramisu’ rum and kahlua soaked chocolate cake, iced in coffee ganache and layered with mascarpone sabayon, ’Coconut Panna Cotta’ with lime syrup, fruit garnish and cookies, ‘Cannolis and Spumoni’ classic mini cannolis served with a scoop of spumoni ice cream and strawberries pazzo, and ’Flourless Chocolate Cake’ espresso flavored chocolate cake with warm chocolate sauce & roasted banana gelato.

After a very warm reception from our host and its staff, to spending so much valuable time tasting such a great menu; we had closed the place down for that evening. Everyone had such a wonderful time that it was so hard to leave this restaurant; its waiting staff and what the Chef had delighted our palates on. I will diffidently recommend Siena at The Courtyard to everyone I know and come to know. It will now matter how far you need to travel, this quaint American / Italian style restaurant, located in the historic downtown of Castle Rock, is easy to find.

Thank You All, The owner of Siena Restaurant,  Maureen Russell (Marketing Director), Mark Gilbert (General Manager)!

 molly-brown-ale1

When The Denver TasteCastingteam arrived, we             were quickly greeted with a warm hospitality by the hosting staff at the front desk. After mentioning  a TasteCasting event the staff immediately welcomed        our arrival and showed us to our tastecasting banquet room; there we were greeted by Banquet manager: David Bolding and Executive Chef: Jose Hurtado. Tastecasting members were served their choice of drink; I Choose the Molly’s Titanic Brown Ale ”Unsinkably malty, Molly’s Titanic Brown Ale draws its inspiration from the classic brown   ales of England. A multi-dimensional beer finely balanced between the malt      flavor and hops.” It was a fabulous tasting ale for sure!

Before our tasting we grabed our camera’s and set out    to explore this large restaurant. Take a look at this video of Rock Bottom, and see what they can offer your group, and for any occasions!

Ah! I can just picture myself having a wonderful diner out on this patio feeling the cool breeze on my face; did I mention listening to a live band on Friday nights. And If you enjoy watching sports while you dine, you can sit on a cozy stool at the bar or choose a private table to dine; either way they offer a lot of T.V’s to see any kind of sports entertaiment through out the entire restaurant. After touring this eye appealing    atmosphere, we return to the banquet room to taste great food & drinks.

We began our tasting with salads and appetizers. First we received a delightfully, crisp, Tuscan Chicken Salad: Plum-marinated chicken, mixed greens, fresh Roma tomatoes, red peppers, carrots, Granny Smith apples, candied walnuts, Gorgonzola cheese and croutons. Tossed with our balsamic vinaigrette’

Then came my favorite item, The Titan Toothpicks: Our signature starter combines smoked chicken, MontereyJack cheese, peppers and onions in hand-rolled, crispy tortillas. Served with homemade guacamole, fresh salsa and chipotle BBQ sauce.

If that wasn’t all, then came more beer tastings paired with selected item that enhanced one another. Now for the main course. Overnight braised short rib: Slow-roasted boneless short rib, White Cheddar mashed potatoes, fire-roasted tomatoes and pearl onions with roasted mushroom sauce, and “My favorite” Grilled Ahi TUna: Lightly seasoned Ahituna fillet grilled medium-rare and served with lemon rice and seasonal vegetables.

This was a great experience in food tasting and beer making.  I hope you’ll join us in spreading the word on this great dining place and why don’t you head on down tonight to taste what we have or try something new!

Thank You All, Steve Cominsky (Managing Partner), David Bolding (Banquet Manager), Jose Hurtado (Executive Chef), John McClure (Brewmaster)!

For Denver locals as well as visitors, Simms Landing was a nice place to eat and look out over the city.  A romantic view for couples.  A memorable place for a celebration.   A fabulous brunch.  After many years as Simms Landing, though, it was time for a change.  But how does one change a landmark restaurant like this?

Landry’s restaurants has outdone themselves but creating Simms Steakhouse that not only serves all American fare, but shares it with a touch of the unexpected!  From their appetizer “East meets West”  which is a zesty tuna tartare drizzled with wasabi cream paired with seared peppered tuna with avocado to the simple “Chips and Strings” combining favs such as fresh made potato chips and onion strings but then surpising you with fried jalapeno rings in the mix!  For the soup course, the Lobster Bisque is packed with huge pieces of lobster.

The salads are large enough for two if you so chose to share one of these beauties.  Ranging from the traditional Iceberg Wedge to the gorgeous Roasted Beet Salad, these are surely going to be a treat as well as just a foregleam of things to come!  While there is still some seafood on the menu, Simms has added fabulous steaks that they serve with roasted vegetables.  If you are looking for other tasy fares, they have lovely chicken entrees as well as a 20 oz Buffalo Bone-in Rib Eye.  There are also some wonderful side dishes that can be shared including: multiple potato dishes, a tempting Smoked Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese, and creamed corn which is fresh off the ear.

If after this amazing repast, you have to save room for dessert, Simms dessert menu doesn’t let you down.  The desserts can easily serve two and range between the towering Chocolate Mousse cake, traditional Creme Brulee, a French style Cheesecake or the Custard Trio which brings together three lovely custards which included an  orange “creamsicle” flavored custard that takes you back to your childhood.

Via Baci Hosts Denver TasteCasting

Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | Posted in Denver | 2 Comments »

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Via Baci Italian Bistro recently hosts  a  Denver TasteCasting event! Via Baci,  is one of the latest restaurants to find that having a dedicated group of ‘Social Media’ Twitter about their food is good business. Via Baci is open sun – thurs: 11-9 and fri & sat: 11-10. For more info: (303) 790-0828

Google Map Coming south on I-25 take the Lincoln Avenue exit and go West, looking for the Super Target on your left. Easy to find and plenty of free parking too. If the weather is wet (or white) park on the lower covered area and take the stairs or the elevator. Nice touch!

Denver 'TasteCasting members for this event.

Left to Right -Russ: Denver Co-Captain, Via Baci Operator: Jeff McCleary, Director of Marketing: Chad M. Hacker and Denver 'TasteCasting:' Founding Captain, Kyle J. Soltesz

Via Baci Italian Bistro uses a neat 800 degree wood oven!

Jeff McCleary is the operator for Via Baci and he’s well served with a large, well trained staff. Our visit, on a Tuesday evening found the place to be FULL but at no time did we feel slighted or have to wait on the next offering. A stroll around the entire area also found regular customers (many called by name as they entered) to also not want for food or drink. It’s a nice happy place to enjoy!

Twitter, Eat, Repeat

Via Baci has been around only a couple of years, but has undergone a unique makeover. Previously one entered a somewhat standard serving line to order. Now, you are greeted at the door and they have 100% service to your table! They also offer a large patio for outdoor dining… weather permitting.

First of all let us say what Via Baci is NOT. They are not just ‘another’ pizza place! When they opened they sent their multiple chefs directly to Italy for nearly a month of first hand training to gain valuable knowledge about what real Italian food is about. Very professional touch. They are also not afraid to change to meet the public’s expectations either… proven by their change to a more up-scale full service model.

Lest you think this change means ‘high prices’ well it does not. Counting over 50 items on their dinner menu (they also serve lunch too) there are only 3 items over $16… $16.49 to be exact.

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Our TasteCasting crew were presented with wonderful food! Fresh Caesar salad with big shavings of parmigiano and Caprese with Via Baci’s famous made-fresh daily mozzarella and seared Ahi Tuna! Yum! If you want it really fresh, stop in about 11am for lunch and just ask. They will be happy to let you taste their efforts!

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Great Ahi Tuna!

Next we dove into their Prosciutto Fig Bruschetta (great) and their wonderful Burrata (fresh mozzarella filled with ricotta) which was delicious and creamy. This was side by side with Shrimp Skewer with grape tomatoes and artichoke hearts! Got your attention yet?!

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Via Baci has wine… good wine! Every Tuesday and Thursday after 5pm they have 1/2 price wine served at their nice bar area or at your table of course. Enjoy and let waitress “Shea’ be your guide if you are lucky enough to have her service!

How about Pumpkin Ravioli in brown butter sauce? Yes they do have pizza made to order so how about Chicken Bianco with fresh herbs, goat cheese, olives scallions loaded with their fresh mozzarella? You will love it! Not enough yet? Move to the Prosciutto E Rucola and enjoy the fresh prosciutto!

Still hungry? I have to say that my favorite was their Bolognese! It’s a really rich meat ragu with fresh, thick pasta.

Desserts were to die for! Tiramasu… classic and Prosecco Float!

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Via Baci, which is also open for lunch, is certainly worth the trip from anywhere… we had some tasters from North of Denver proper, but for those lucky enough to live in the Littleton, LoneTree area you simply have to see what you are missing. They are kid friendly and have easy, wide doors for wheelchair access that are a plus.

And if all this isn’t enough… THEY DELIVER!

Via Baci Italian Bistro

Thanks Jeff! We will certainly be back soon!

Rialto Cafe Hosts TasteCasting

Rialto Cafe – 1# stop in downtown Denver

“Rialto Cafe” Located in the heart of downtown Denver, on the popular 16th Street Mall, A restaurant that features expertly prepared American foods. Serves breakfast & lunch & Diner Mon – Thurs, 6:30am – 10pm, Friday and Sat until 11pm, Sun, until 10pm. 934 Sixteenth Street Denver, CO 80202 303-893-CAFE (2233)

Well the evening at the Rialto Cafe was wonderful to use a single word! Not having been there previously, we were unsure what to expect. We had reviewed their website briefly and felt it would be good… but nothing prepared us for the great evening we had.

Chad, Director of Marketing and J. Allen Adams co-owner were assisted by Chris a smooth, self-assured waiter. Our party numbered about 16 as I recall, but seating was easy since they had a reserved area for Denver TasteCasting and had already thought out a ‘Multi-Course’ meal!

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

Finding The Rialto was easy. It’s convenient on the 16th Street Mall which is all you need to know. Vicki and I arrived first since we left a little early to ensure the rain and traffic were not an issue. They welcomed us immediately and since we had a few minutes we selected a Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay ‘Indian Wells’. It’s out of Washington and was smooth and reminded us of our regular ‘CakeBread’.

The Rialtowent out of their way for us frankly. They lavished us with heavy serving of their Bruschetta, Empanadas and Calamari to start. Each was unique and tasty. The presentation was great and Mr. J. Allen Adams went into long detail about how each dish, though served at many places was made unique at the Rialto. Frankly one could make a meal of just these great ‘Starters’, but Chad and Mr. Adams had more in-store for us!

Next came two of their many amazing salads. To call these items simply salad is an insult frankly. The Baby Spinach Salad was light but tasty withvery thinly sliced red and yellow beet strips that had been marinated. It had a herb vinaigrette and was loaded with nice gorgonzolacheese. The other was a Warm Roasted Chicken salad withmore items than you can count. fresh and dried fruits, berries, toasted walnuts, cornbread croutons and several mixed greens. This was mounded with lightly shredded warm chicken. Both were treats!

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

To break the wait for the next course, J. Allen brought out the Rialto’s famous cornbread. Each is served in it’s own small iron skillet and gives 4 large pieces. The cornbread had a great topping of brown sugar and cornflakes! Try it without any butter and you will swear it’s almost a dessert!

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

As if all this were not enough, the next course was soon delivered! Such an amazing plate! This time we were greeted with; Seared Salmon with wheatberrypilaf and cranberry brown butter sauce, along withBraised Short Ribs withwhipped potatoes with pancetta. Then there was Grilled Ahi Tuna. This is sashimigrade quality stuff with wasabi whipped potatoes (I could eat a big bowl of these!). Then there were Gorgonzola Cannelloni! Ahh! Amazing! Stuffed with gorgonzola whipped potatoes in a nice cream sauce. Finally, there was a nice Filet Mignon which Mr. Allen explained came from ‘Happy’ cows in Nebraska. They oversee the complete cycle of the beef from pure feed, no chemicals to cutting the items in-house. Fork tender so don’t even pickup your knife!

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

Between Tweets and burps we were finally greeted witha dessert sample tray that would make you blush. My wife’s notes say, “To die for cheesecake bites”, “chocolate mousse with biscotti! (note the exclaminationpoint!)”. There was also Praline pound cake with warm chocolate sauce and my favorite Tiramisu which is custom baked for them in NY and flown in.

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

Now if you think this evening would break the bank, you are dead wrong. Prices ranged in the 12 to 15 dollar range for most items. They have a great staff who know and care what they are doing, a full bar and more. The place will remind you of a 40’s style supper club which is no accident. The owners reviewed many classic places, especially in Chicago to help decide on how the interior would be furnished. They hit the nail as you would say!

The Denver TasteCasting Team for the Rialto!

From Denver TasteCasting – Rialto Cafe

Grab your mate and head to the Rialto Cafe. (see the links above) Don’t set a time to be gone. Don’t limit your selection. Perhaps let ‘Chris’ be your waiter if he’s around and let him suggest for you. Be open and let your taste buds be the decision maker… you won’t be sorry.

In short… Great, Classy, Professional, Enjoyable, Amazing… well, you get the point! Go there! Soon!

A SPECIAL OFFER

At Rialto Cafe just mention”TasteCasting SPECIAL” and receive one of these specials when you Dine before 5pm: get 15% off your total bill, Or “TasteCasting SPECIAL 2″ get $10 off a bottle of wine.                           valid Monday-Sunday,expires on 7/15/09

We know that you expect and deserve a much better quality pizza, not just one that claims to be! Double D’s is not your ordinary traditional crust pizza, it is extraordinary and has an unforgettable taste. It has the taste of light sourdough bread and is crispy on the outside, soft n chewy in the middle. Best of all they have Value Meals.
