HOGGY’S RESTAURANT & CATERING “There’s More to Love at Hoggy’s”

Right Around The Corner – Minutes Away

This eatery is their neighborhood style location.  It’s located in quaint downtown Grandview at 1416 W. 5th Ave. Grandview Ohio.  Sitting on the Hoggy’s patio, you can hear the birds sing and the heart beat of a small town center all around you.  You here the cars pass by and enjoy the beautifully landscaped patio with cafe style seating.  It is as if you are in a small European town.

The Areas First Real BBQ Joint

Let’s begin with a brief history. Hoggy’s first opened its doors an June 27, 1991, and quickly became a destination for those who wanted the very best BBQ.  But long before Hoggy’s smoker was loaded with apple wood, its entrepreneurial spirit was committed to bringing real BBQ to central Ohio.  Countless hours were dedicated to the creation of Hoggy’s…the make up of the menu, the atmosphere, and how hoggy’s would be different…no detail was too small.  The result of these conversations became the focus of what we now know as Hoggy’s…the area’s first real BBQ joint.

A Few Words From Mark Turner

Mark addressed the team  as we anticipated the feast to come. We had the pleasure to dine with Mark Turner, one of three principle owners of Hoggy’s.  We asked if he would tell us a little about his vision of Hoggy’s and what they are striving to accomplish in standing out among so many other restaurant options that diners have.

BBQ is the feature but as you look at the menu you discover there are many other options.

The general manager, Libby Haag, put together quite a feast for our palates to ponder.  We were treated first to an assortment of what they call STARTERS.  As Matt, our server, delivered the assortment to the table, you could only say ‘WOW’.  This is what Mark the owner says they are trying to accomplish.  They want the passing of a dish to the table next to you to sell their product, but more on that later.  The STARTERS can be served on towers which are placed in the center of the table for easy access.  These towers hold three plates of STARTERS.  We tried the Loaded Nachos, Hand Dipped Onion Rings, and Smoked Wings with both there original BBQ sauce and Daddy’s Cajun Rub.  The Cajun Rub was my favorite.  Mark Turner would describe each as we tried them.  He was like a proud parent showing off pictures of his kids.

Salads To Suit Everyones’ Taste

No sooner did we finish the STARTERS when the salads arrived.

We each had a portion of three of the varied salads on there menu.  We

tasted the Creamy Chicken with fresh pulled chicken in their homemade mix with  seedless grapes.  It was served on a bed of lettuce in a crunchy tortilla shell.  The Blue Cheese Apple Salad had fresh slices of Granny Smith apples tossed with mixed greens, pecans, blue cheese, and cornbread.  Moist cornbread like this I have never had.  Leftovers are often taken home for breakfast with sugar and milk.  A greek place Hoggy’s is not, but the Mediterranean Chicken with grilled chicken breast, Greek dressing, feta cheese, kalamata olives, fresh green beans, and warm fresh baked cornbread  would please the palate of a discerning Greek.

Can’t linger,  the main coarse is arriving.

Let me first say, the sides are as good as the entrees.  We tasted Smoked Baby Back Ribs, Smoked Pulled Chicken, Smoked Pulled Pork, Smoked Texas Style Brisket and Jamaican Salmon.  No favorites here for me.  They were all so good I would not be able to choose.  You can tell the effort that has gone into putting together this menu.  The side dishes served to us are like no others I can ever remember having.  Take the mac-n-cheese.  The macaroni was tender and the cheese was smooth.  There was just a slight tart taste to it.  It rates as my favorite side and by far the best mac-n-cheese I have ever had.  Oh, by the way, I make pretty good mac-n-cheese.

I always answer the question “have you saved room for dessert” with a firm “No!”  But, when Matt brought out the three layer chocolate cake, I could not speak.  This is another example of the WOW factor Mark was talking about.  This serving of cake could be shared by four people.  Just look at the photo.  Again, you can tell that this is no restaurant supply cake.  Hoggy’s bakes all of there cakes fresh from scratch as well as the cornbread mentioned before.

Just look at all those pieces of apple. The Triple Layer Apple Cake has a huge piece of apple in every bite

Well said Rob! I was also part of the TasteCasting crew at Hoggy’s and was so impressed by the quality and variety of the offerings. I’ve been there many times, but hadn’t tried many of the menu selections. I’m going to vary my choices a little more in the future. I love love love their ribs and the Cajun Rub wings are my new favorite. Never had them before! And seriously, the Triple Layer Double Chocolate Cake was a real treat. Decadently delicious with a rich cocoa flavor that made it the perfect end to a wonderful meal. There really is something for everyone at Hoggy’s.
