Bursting with Flavor at Vila Thai

More Than Just a Restaurant.

Being new to Tucson, I have been fortunate to meet with many business owners who have the desire to be successful. Success should not measure by monetary gains, but by giving back to the community, seeing little dreams take shape, and sharing one’s passion in food, art, and culture. After meeting with Vila Jarrell, I not only felt like I had met a dedicated businesswoman, but someone who truly sets others before herself.  Vila Thai, located at 972 E. University Blvd is on the second floor overlooking the main restaurant strip for the University of Arizona. Located in the same area is one of the People’s Studio Galleries, supported by the Marshall Foundation and manned by The Vila Art Foundation, which is comprised of local artists. The artworks spans from painting to sculptures to photography. These artists have the privilege of showing their work rent-free. There is also a monthly “First Thursday Art-Walk” in conjunction with Main Gate Square that includes more than 30 artists, live music, and beer and wine tasting along University Boulevard between Park and Euclid.

Outside of The Vila Art Foundation, Vila and Vila Thai are heavily involved in giving back to the community. Everything that comes into the restaurant goes back out to foundations, organizations, and community efforts. It was so inspiring to see someone who cared so much about others around her.

“The Vila Thai Experience”

My other taster and I arrived just as Vila Thai was about to open their doors. The Vila Thai team was already bustling by preparing for guests. The artists that are displaying their work in the gallery across from the restaurant were prepping for viewers. Before the doors opened, an anxious line of diners was waiting to have what I call the “Vila Thai Experience.” The inside, outside, and gallery went from stirring to a flurry quicker than I could comprehend. Watching Vila and her crew orchestrate a flawless service and impeccable time management impressed me tremendously. We went on a Saturday and managed to catch the “5 for $5″ deal, in which for $5 you receive 5 tickets to go see David McGuiggan, or as we liked to call him “Dave the Wine Guy.” Dave will take your ticket and give you a sampling of the selected wines for the evening. The wine varies each week. We had the chance to try 5 different big bold red wines from various countries. It was a really great experience because you can closely compare the wines without having to purchase a full glass. Once you determine your favorite, you can purchase a glass of it to enjoy at the restaurant or purchase a bottle to take home with you, just make sure one of the works uncorks it for you then reseals it for legal reasons.

It was wonderful to see the various families, groups of friends, students, and artists that were having the same joyful experience we were. There was a Film Maker’s Mixer going on outside in the beautiful common patio area. Raffles were being held, wine was being tasted, and fun was being had. Even with all the activity going on, I could not help but to have a smile on my face the entire time from the vast amounts of positive energy Vila Thai Cuisine had.

There’s Hot, Then There’s Thai.

I must admit, being from a small town in an Ohio suburb, I have not had much experience with Thai cuisine. The stereotypical things I heard about coming to Vila Thai was that Thai food was spicy, spicy, and very spicy. I was apprehensive at first because my spice pallet is not as refined as I would like it to be, but Vila informed me that I can choose my spice level (1-5 stars), and my dish would be made accordingly. I chose a safe 3, while my other team member chose 5. She is definitely more daring than I.

While choosing the items we wanted from the menu choose we asked the wait staff what their particular favorites were. I could not wait to see what Head Chef Redman had in store for us. When it came to ordering appetizers, we picked the Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce (Chef Redman’s secret concoction). Typical spring rolls would have a plain iceberg lettuce in it, but Vila’s Spring Rolls were stuffed with fresh herbs and organic mixed greens. My taste buds were thrilled with bursting flavor. Next, I got the Tom Ka, which is a traditional Thai style hot and sour soup with straw mushroom, lime leaf, lemon grass, and limejuice. It also includes coconut milk and your choice of meat, tofu, or vegetable. You can order the Tom Yum, which does not contain coconut milk as well. I ordered this as a 3 star spice-level. I now crave this soup everyday! The soup has such a warm and full-bodied flavor followed by a spicy finish. I feared the spice level and kept a glass of water beside me; to my surprise, I did not need even need it. 3 stars were just right for me. My other taster ordered the Green Curry with shrimp at a 5 star spice-level. This was excessively spicy for me, but she could not get enough. Being a big fan of Thai food, she was thoroughly impressed with the flavor and ingredient quality of all her dishes. She had also ordered Som Tum (Papaya Salad), which has shredded green papaya, prawns, and tomatoes mixed w/lime juice. This is Thailand’s favorite salad, and after she let me have a try, it was soon my favorite too! For my entree, I chose the “Mushroom Lover’s Stir-Fry” with Tofu. This dish is a great option for vegetarians. The dish is a stir-fry with five exotic mushrooms made to order with your choice of protein, tofu, shrimp, chicken or pork. It came with a heaping bowl of rice that brought a smile to my face! We saw Vila walk by with a plate of chocolate cake with strawberries and just had to try it. Even though her Mango Sticky Rice would have finished off our meal perfectly, we could not help but be allured by the beautiful dish. We were not disappointed! Even though this dish is not traditionally Thai, it did not lack in flavor. The entire meal was robust, flavorful, and most importantly, delicious.

Wrapping Up, and Winding Down.

After our wonderful meal, we had the chance to walk around and chat with the local artists and patrons of the restaurant and gallery. It was clear to see that Vila has made a dramatic influence on the Tucson community and everyone she comes in contact with whether on a daily basis or with in the four short years she as lived her. The numerous events are listed on the website as well as pictures from previous events.

The best time to take a trip to Vila Thai is during the dinner hours. Since the restaurant is small, please contact Vila Thai at 393-3489 to make reservations for large parties or to coordinate your birthday, bachelor or bachelorette party, fund raising event, book signing, artist reception, or business meeting.

We want to sincerely thank Vila and her entire crew for hosting a wonderful Taste Casting evening for us. It was truly an experience to remember. Stop by and check it out for yourself! If you mention Taste Casting or bring in the coupon listed below, you can receive 10% off your bill. You can also receive 10% off if you are a member of the Armed Forces.

We hope you have a great experience just like we did! Thanks again Vila!

Things Are Heating Up At Fire+Spice

Monday, August 10th, 2009 | Posted in Tucson | No Comments »

Fire+Spice, Oh So Nice.

As you exit the back side of the lobby in the Sheraton Hotel and make your way across the courtyard, you’ll notice a couple large fire pits on the far side of the pool, which might be lit depending on what time of day it is. You may ask yourself, why do they have firepits by the pool in Arizona? Well my friend, the answer is simple. S’mores. Now that’s not the only reason they exist, but it sure is a good one. They also herald the entrance to Fire + Spice, an Arizona Grill, one of Tucson’s newest dining establishments and perhaps one of it’s best kept secrets (not on purpose of course, as is obvious by us Casting about it!) Established in early February of this year, Fire & Spice is the Sheraton Tucson’s signature restaurant, offering a “modern twist on Arizona cuisine with the influences of the Southwest and Native American artisan recipes.” As of this Cast, the Sheraton is still in the process of getting some Fire + Spice signs up in front of the hotel and in the lobby, but believe us when we say that doesn’t stop the place from filling up every night.

Despite it’s novelty and it’s location within the hotel, Fire + Spice is already well connected to the Tucson community in a multitude of ways, from it’s Chef David Ferrara (a local Tucsonan) to the Live Jazz events on Tuesday nights hosted by the Tucson Jazz Institute, and on to the Tango lessons and dancing offered on Wednesdays. Fire + Spice further integrates itself into the local culture and economy by purchasing only fresh, locally grown and produced ingredients from Arizona farmers and food purveyors with which they create their spectacular breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Now we can’t speak for breakfast and lunch, but after the dinner experience we were privileged to sample, we’ll certainly be coming back in the very near future to find out.

The restaurant certainly stands up to it’s name, with Fire greeting you at the entrance, and Spice waiting for you in the kitchen! The drink menu is no slouch, with a multitude of local and import wines, beer, and specialty house drinks, including a Prickly Pear Punch. In a true display of desert dining, the bar boasts more types of tequila than it does beer, with a whopping 16 labels. After ordering a few drinks, we were presented with the house Tortilla Soup. I say presented because it wasn’t just someone dropping off a cup of soup at the table with a pack of crackers, oh no. First a very artistic-looking bowl was placed in front of each of us, pre-filled with an incredible mixture of goodies including chicken machaca, Asadero cheese, fresh tomatoes and avocado, and of course crispy tortilla strips. Our server Jon then filled each bowl with fresh broth, a secret recipe prepared with plenty of Spice, and producing the most wonderful aroma. The style of the soup paired with it’s impeccable flavor foreshadowed a delicious evening, and we were certainly not let down.

Savory Salads

The next course to be served was salad. We sampled 2 different ones, the San Pedro Taco Salad, and a Chipotle Caeser. The San Pedro was a masterpiece of Romaine lettuce nestled against some locally made, fried tortilla pieces, topped with chicken machaca, crème fresh, Cotija and Asadero cheeses, tomatoes, and finished off with a portion of the delicious house-made guacamole. The Chipotle Caeser was a mixture of greens along with crispy tortilla strips, cheese, and roasted corn tossed in a sweet Chipotle Caeser dressing with just the right amount of heat to warm the belly and tickle the taste-buds.

Amazing Appetizers and Entrees

Next was appetizers: wings, shrimp, southwest rolls, and snake bites. The wings were tossed in a prickly pear Jalapeno glaze, continuing the theme of sweet heat we got from the Chipotle Caeser. They also came with a side of house-made chipotle ranch, nicely enhancing the flavor of the chicken. The southwest rolls were similar to a crispy egg-roll but were stuffed with a gooey concoction of pork chorizo, chicken machaca, and melted cheeses, then topped with a sprits of avocado crème. The shrimp were simple, don’t let that fool you. Tiger Prawns grilled then chilled to maintain the perfect consistency, they were dusted with ancho chile and cumin, creating the perfect combination of Fire & Spice. Last and anything but least were the snakebites, my personal favorite. Locally grown jalapenos halved and then filled with tiger prawn cream cheese mousse, wrapped in bacon, and again topped with a dash of avocado crème.

After taking a breather and sipping some water, we braced ourselves for what we knew would be an impressive array of entrees., which is exactly what we got. Chicken Machaca enchiladas (this is a continuing theme throughout the menu, because it’s so delicious!) topped with avocado crème and red enchilada sauce, pork tenderloin drizzled with a honey-green chile sauce and served with sweet potato puree, carne asada marinated in Dos Equis and grilled to perfection, and a honey-chipotle glazed salmon that was certainly Spiced, but subtly enough to allow the smoky flavor of the salmon to come through. The salmon was served on a bed of Arizona-grown rice and spinach, and accompanied by summer squash, red peppers, and slices of mango all Fired on the grill.

Delightful Dessert

The most memorable part of the evening was being able to partake in wonderful conversation by the fire pits while we cooked our S’mores. Fire +Spice offers a S’more kit for those who’d like to create theirs themselves, but they also can make them in the back and bring them out if you’d like.  It was so relaxing after a filling dinner and we will be coming back for more!

A big thank you goes out to Damen K. and the waitstaff at Fire +Spice for hosting a wonderful Taste Casting.  They have graciously given us a chance to offer an appetizer or dessert FREE when you purchase two entrees. You can make reservations at 520-321-7621.  Stop in today and let them know the Taste Casters sent you!!

Something For Everyone at The Cottage Bakery and Cafe

Thursday, August 6th, 2009 | Posted in Tucson | 3 Comments »

A Long Time Tucson Gem…

It was so nice to walk into The Cottage Bakery and Cafe and feel like I have been there a million times before.  Located at 800 N. Kolb Rd., just south of Speedway Blvd, this restaurant has a little bit of everything for everyone.  The owner started out doing wholesale in 1991, and eventually ended up as a retail bakery at the Kolb location in 2001.

The building is very spacious with plenty of room to have a large group gathering, business meeting, or playdate.  There is one floor and a second-story loft with seating available as well.  This venue also boasts a fully gated in patio area to enjoy a nice cup of specialty coffee outside during the cooler months.

The Options, The Options…

Making assumptions about what The Cottage has to offer is not a smart thing to do.  I was completely blown away at all of the menu choices available.  They boast an entire menu with breakfast options like breakfast burritos, sandwiches, stuffed croissants, , sandwiches, soups and salads, entrees, wraps, and of course, pastries and cakes.  All of these are available open to close.  If you can dream it up, The Cottage has it.  What’s even more wonderful is you can show off all of these options to your friends by having your event catered.  Despite all of the options that are given, if you don’t see exactly what you want on the menu, just ask. They cater events, and cater to your needs!

What is even more great about the many options is that there are options for those who have dietary restrictions as well.  Gluten-Free products, Vegetarian meals, and Soy options are available and they taste just as good as the regular selection.

The two Taste Casters that accompanied me chose very different items.  One chose The Cottage Cobb Salad, while the other ordered  the Caesar Chicken Wrap with a Crab and Broccoli Chowder.  The salad was topped with fresh ingredients and in-house-created croutons.  I must admit, when the Crab and Broccoli Chowder came out I was skeptical.  However, after one bite I almost stole the entire bowl from him(I came back a couple of days later and ordered an entire bowl for myself).  When it came my turn to order, I was so torn on what to order because everything looked so great.  The staff recommended the Sonoran Pie, and after reading the description (Crustless southwestern quiche with corn, green chiles, refried beans, Pico de Gallo, and corn chips), I was sold.  That was easily the best decision I had made all day.  The Sonoran Pie was such a unique and interesting dish and I couldn’t have eaten it any faster.  What made it wash down so easily was the homemade lemonade.  I even took some home with me!

Getting Your Just Desserts…

Cakes, cookies, brownies…Oh My!  If you have a sweet tooth, you need to be in here daily to satisfy it.  With 13 kinds of cakes with more than 25 fillings and flavors alone, you will find something to tickle your fancy.  My eyes immediately took to the selections of brownies.  The brownie that made me intrigued was “The Best Brownie Ever.”  The Best Brownie ever was the daily dessert sample lying out, so I took a piece. Then I took two more.  There are some pretty interesting desserts to choose from including smaller cakes at a more affordable price than the standard 9″ cakes including a German Chocolate Cake, and the popular “Yuppie Ding Dong Cake.”  After perusing, I chose the Espresso Nut Brownie.  If you could ever pack everything that is good and wonderful in the world into a brownie, The Espresso Nut Brownie would be it.  It was so moist and full of flavor, I almost couldn’t eat it all!  If brownies don’t do it for you, there are also cookies, cupcakes, bars, and other sweetened goodies to pick from after your meal.

Come and Get it!

You can stop by The Cottage Bakery and Cafe Tuesday-Saturday from 7am until 6pm with the exception being that every other Saturday The Cottage stays open late and hosts live music around until 10pm, Sunday 8am until 3pm, and The Cottage is closed on Mondays.  If you’d like to place a specialty cake order, please allow a minimum of 24 hours for the order.  Catering is also available daily, and you can pick up a catering menu inside the Cafe.  You can also give them at a call at 520-722-1129 to see what options are available.  Stop out during business hours and let them know that Taste Casting sent you!  If you print the coupon off at the bottom, you can purchase one item, and receive another one for half off!

A special thanks goes out to The Cottage Bakery and Cafe for having the Taste Casters come experience a wonderful treat!  I definitely know it won’t be my last time out there!

The Cereal Boxx is Grrrrrreat!

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 | Posted in Tucson | 2 Comments »

Discovering New Creations

I usually don’t travel to the University of Arizona campus, especially when school has already begun.  However, I have found a reason to visit often.  The Cereal Boxx, located at 943 E. University Blvd., has everything I need to get my day up and going.  Jordan and Terra Schacht conjured up the idea of this restaurant while grabbing a late night bowl of cereal, and now it has really made a mark on Tucson.

Having a Great Experience

Two Taste Casters and I went on a Sunday right around brunch time.  We were pleased at how relaxing it was so it and watch passer-bys and hear the murmur of people coming in and grabbing “their usual” and heading off to finish their day. A family next to us even asked to speak to Jordan and commented on the great prices. What was so great was the turn around time for these customers to receive their order.  I didn’t see a single customer wait more than 4 minutes for anything.  Even the waffles were made to order on a visible waffle iron and brought right out to enjoy.  You can tell that the people who come here are regulars and are extremely loyal to the restaurant.  While talking with Jordan, an entire volleyball team came in and was so excited to see that Jordan had special made Cap’n Crunch® Krispie Treats ready for them that they had requested the previous day.  The Cereal Boxx always takes requests, and tries to accommodate their wide variety of customers.   That’s only one of the great features that Cereal Boxx has to offer.  Everything is made in-house, and sold quickly to ensure freshness.   Some other great points for families and students alike is that there is a big screen television with Guitar Hero and other Wii games, and also hula-hoops, crayons, and magazines to enjoy.  This is great for a mother like me who wants to just have a nice meal and let her children enjoy themselves without having to try to keep them entertained by hoping the table has enough napkins to play a game of peek-a-boo.  So, how would a place like this attract someone without kids or a college course to attend?  The Cereal Boxx is great for getting some unique catered treats to take to your next business meeting, reception, or a late night brainstorming session.  Well, the prompt service is great, and if you have time on your hands, free Wi-Fi is also available for use.  Three other televisions with a variety of different programs are continuously on during business hours as well.

Loving the Options

After our talk with Jordan, we were eager to try a variety of things on the menu.  Most people would hear “The Cereal Boxx” and assume that cereal was all they had to offer.  While cereal plays a large role in the restaurant with more than 30 cereals offered, there are a multitude of other options to choose from.  I immediately jumped for the Bacon Scramble Wrap.  It was served hot with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese, salsa & green chile.  It was easily enough for me to take some to-go.  You can also choose chorizo or sausage for your scramble wrap.  If you like a nice cold something on a hot day, there is so much to decide between on the menu.  Andrea tried the “Health Nut II” which is Kashi Heart to Heart®, Cinnamon Life®, cranberries, raisins, almonds and pecans.  There was easily enough to stick a lid on it and take it to your next class or back to work.  The cranberries were so fresh and tasty.  The Cereal Boxx also offers smoothies, a full-service espresso bar, bagels, loaded baked potatoes, fresh juices, and more.  There are pre-created menu options to choose from, but the menu is really about choices and making your own tasty treat.  I’d personally choose Lucky Charms® with cranberries and peaches in Skim Milk. The menu changes as well, so if you have something you’d really like to see, suggest it!

Savoring the Sweets

What is specially unique about The Cereal Boxx, is their assortment of desserts.  I’d have to say that I haven’t tasted anything like their Coconut Chocolate Tea Cake before in my entire life.  Since everything is made fresh daily, the cake had the perfect consistency.  The volleyball team came in and eyeballed our chocolate M&M marshmallow brownies.  The best part about the selection is that you can request cereals to be put into a Krispie Treat!

Contributing to the Community

Jordan and Terra really pride themselves in the various charities they have contributed over the past few years raising more than 100,000 dollars for various charities and clubs such as Casa De Los Ninos, UofA Fraternities and Soroities, and more.  They offer special benefit days for groups with 20% of all sales going to the charity of choice.  They also offer birthday party services suited for any budget.

Coming Back Again

If you are visiting Tucson, have been a long time resident, or just haven’t been to campus in a while, stopping by The Cereal Boxx will be a great experience for you.  You can stop by The Cereal Boxx Monday-Thursday 7a.m. to 5p.m., Friday 7a.m. to 4p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 8a.m. to 3p.m. .  Make sure to call ahead for special summer hours.  The  best time to visit with minimal traffic is after 10a.m. on the weekdays, and before 10a.m. on the weekends.  So escape from the heat, pick and choose your meal, and enjoy!  Tell them that Taste Casting sent you and print off the 10% off coupon below for even more savings off their already great pricing.  Once you try them out, leave us a comment and let us know what you created and how your experience was.  You can also check them out on Twitter, Facebook, and Blogger pages. If you have already been there and would like to rave about it, leave a comment as well!

Big Taste at Rocco’s Little Chicago

Thursday, June 25th, 2009 | Posted in Tucson | 7 Comments »

Meeting the Owner

Coming from Ohio, it’s nice to meet people who love the Mid-West just as much as I do.  It’s clear to see that Rocco’s Little Chicago owner Rocco DiGrazia couldn’t be more proud of his hometown by the love that he puts in his food.  Rocco started Little Chicago ten and a half years ago, and has accrued quite a large following throughout Tucson.  Located on the north side of Broadway between Country Club and Campbell, it’s location is easy to get to from the nearby University of Arizona Campus, but it’s really worth traveling any distance to taste what Rocco’s has to offer.  You can find the restaurant easily by it’s sign with quirky sayings such as “Best Pizza in Iran!” and “Eat it, Tweet it.” (I think that last one was specifically for us Taste Casters.)

All About the Atmosphere

I’ve had very few experiences like my first time in Chicago.  I went downtown in the Windy City and tasted my first deep dish pizza amongst of bustling servers and guests eager to dive into their favorite fares.  It’s been years since I’ve had that feeling, and as soon as I walked into Rocco’s, all of those wonderful sights and smells came flooding back to me.  Little Chicago is a great place to take friends, family, and co-workers for a great casual dining experience.  The servers are phenomenal, and our glasses were never empty!  What I find most attractive about the restaurant is the patio.  It’s nice if you want to hang out with a group of your friends, or especially nice when you have children!

Savor the Flavor

We were treated to an array of items that highlighted the entire menu. First, and my personal favorite of the entire evening were the Spicy Hot Sticks. Described on the restaurants website as “Rocco’s award winning sauce twirled up in tender dough,” it does not even begin to describe the avalanche of spectacular taste that I experienced.  The award winning sauce has a Frank’s Red Hot base, with lots of other flavors mixed it. It is also the same sauce they use for their wings.  Make sure you have a cup of water next to you, because the sauce will definitely heat you up!  Excluding the pesto, the rest of his sauces are all made on-site at the restaurant.  Rocco prides himself in the fact that almost everything at Little Chicago is homemade.  What else I found really interesting is that the beer menu changes every few days, and Rocco personally types up a new list every time that it does.  A crowd favorite among those is the “Old Style” beer.  We were also served a great tomato and mozzarella caprese salad  with a vinaigrette that was to die for!  I highly recommend every salad at Rocco’s for their flavor and quality.

Nothing quite compares to the amazing deep dish pizzas we were showcased on Tuesday.  The “Kitchen Sink,” the “Angry Samoan,” and the “Spin City” were topped with a vast variety of locally grown ingredients.  My personal favorite was the Spin City with delicious spinach, fresh basil, four cheeses, garlic & olive oil. If you can’t make up your mind between what to choose, you should go for the Kitchen Sink which has Pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, mushrooms & red onions!  The Angry Samoan was really flavorful and has pancetta, fresh  jalapenos and pineapple all in the mix. If you aren’t really into pizzas, you can dive into a Grilled Sausage & Marinara Sandwich. It’s cut right in two, so if your stomach can’t handle it all at once, take it home and enjoy again!

As if you aren’t already stuffed by just reading about the pizza, make room for some cookies and cheesecake!  The cookies at Rocco’s are one of the most talked about cookies in town. They are made fresh daily, and taste amazing.  If you are looking for something else equally as spectacular, the cheesecakes are shipped from Chicago to Tucson for you to enjoy!

Stop By for a Visit

No matter what part of town you live in, or if you are just stopping by Tucson for a visit,  Rocco’s needs to be on the top of your “To-do List.”  The best times to make it out without much wait are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  Wednesday night is 25 cent wing night which draws quite a crowd.  Weekends are pretty popular as well.  If you can’t seem to make it for a sit-down affair, you can always place a famous carry-out order as well.  Just call 520-321-1860 Monday through Saturday 11a.m. to 10 p.m.  and they are closed on Sundays.  Even if you can’t make it for lunch, Rocco’s delivers!!  Check out their site for delivery areas.

Amazing things are being done at Acacia at St.Philips Plaza!

Monday, June 1st, 2009 | Posted in Tucson | 4 Comments »

Meet the Family at Acacia

This past Saturday evening, the Taste Casters had the privilege to not just meet the owners and staff of a restaurant, but really get to know a family who’ve put nothing but love and pride into what they do.  Lila and Albert, the owners of Acacia at St.Philips, invited us into their restaurant to sample a variety of the great new things to come on their exciting summer menu, set to release on June 1st.  While Lila handles most of the business side of the house, Chef Albert runs the kitchen. All working together, the entire staff create a wonderful synergy that I have rarely seen anywhere else.

First, we were greeted warmly by Lila. She gave us the history of the restaurant, the kinds of dining facilities they have to offer for events, and their hours of business.  Acacia has been thriving in Tucson for the past 5 years thanks to Chef Albert’s creative style and flair.  He has a large following, and some of the wait staff have been employed by Albert for more than 7 years due to the excellent quality of the work environment.

The owners, wait staff, and kitchen team

The owners, wait staff, and kitchen team.

The Much Anticipated Summer Menu

The new menu, set to be launched this Monday, is phenomenal to say the least.  Although very simple in style and presentation, the flavors meet the highest standards that Chef Albert has always been known for in his industry.  While explaining the dishes, Albert says that during the summer season he is focusing on simplifying his dishes without compromising the quality of the ingredients.

An important point about the new summer menu is that the prices will be reduced by around 5-10 dollars a plate.  Everyone has suffered during the economic times, and Acacia still believes in making fine dining affordable for everyone. Not only is Acacia wallet-friendly, but they are pet and family-friendly as well.

We were served samples of practically the entire summer menu. Our first appetizer course, the Roasted Plum Tomato and Fresh Basil Soup with goat cheese was only the start to a round of eye-pleasing and taste-fulfilling dishes. Other appetizers such as lamb rolls, Chinese chicken skewers, and hummus with pita bread were served as well.

lamb-roll1pita1

Next came entrées.  There were so many savory and rich flavors in each dish that it was hard to pick a favorite, but the dish that really stood out was Lamb T-Bone with Red Mashed Potatoes and Cherry Tomatoes.  I couldn’t even begin to describe how perfect every single bite tasted.  The steaks were flavorful, tender, and grill-seared to perfection.  However, the main highlight of the dish was the mashed potatoes.  Chef Albert infused garlic and horseradish to bring spectacular flavor to such a staple dish.  The other Taste Casters were equally delighted by the rest of the delicious entrées.  Among them being Halibut, Skirt Steak, and even Swordfish!  To say the very least, we were pleased.

The last (but certainly not the least!) course we were served was the grand finale: desert.  Plated were some of the wait staff’s favorites: Dulce de Leche Ice Cream, Coconut Cheesecake, and a wonderful Cherry Pie.  There couldn’t have been a better ending to our wonderful dinner than to have these delectable treats to enjoy.

The Music, The Wine, The Atmosphere

I think the greatest quality that Acacia has to offer besides the delicious food has to be the ambiance you experience during your entire meal.  The jazz band set up on the patio added the soundtrack to our wonderful evening.  Jazz bands perform weekly Friday, Saturday, and even during Sunday Brunch.  When the weather is not cooperating, the music is brought in to be enjoyed by the dining patrons inside of the restaurant.  The wine list is extensive, offering many exclusives to the connoisseur.

You can tell that no stone lies unturned when it comes to the beautiful details all around the restaurant.  From the place settings to the wall fountain Acacia has class, style, and beauty.  The restaurant is the complete opposite of stuffy and up-tight. Rather, Acacia is so warm and welcoming, it almost feels like home.

Coming Back for More

Polish Presence in Tucson at Amber Restaurant and Gallery

Fine Eastern European Cuisine

At 7000 East Tanque Verde, just west of Sabino Canyon road, Amber Restaurant and Gallery is an establishment created last December by Peter Witusik and Robert Stawicki.  These friends took their experiences and palettes from Poland and infused it  in their authentic, made from scratch cuisine. These two friends and restaurant owners take great pride in the various and delicious menu options they provide for a city with few chances to really escape from the desert and experience fine Eastern European cuisine.  They invited 6 of our Tucson Taste Casting Team Members to enjoy everything they have to offer.

A Calming Ambiance

Walking into the restaurant, you really feel the soothing atmosphere that the local artwork and decor intend to provide.  It is wonderful to see local artists represented throughout the entire restaurant, and if you like it enough, most of the items are even for sale! The waitstaff is cleanly and professionally dressed and eager to serve. The colors are very warm with whole, wall-length windows that create a very open and breezy dining area.  Looking outside, you will see a gorgeous patio area where a dining area circling a beautiful fountain is also available for dining.

Tasty Polish Fares

Besides the Kielbasa, which is imported from a Polish company in Chicago, IL, everything is made in-house daily with nothing outside of the necessary being frozen.  The six Taste Casting members were served first with bread and two different kinds of butter.  They had an herb and a garlic variety of butter, both of which were unique and very tasty. Next came a sample of their seasonal spinach salad.  My seasonal salad had a nice raspberry vinaigrette dressing, and was just the perfect sample portion for a great starter salad.  The entree was a great sample plate of one of their entrees called “Polish Feast for Two.”  Our portions were hefty, but get the regular dinner size feast, and you are in for just that. The plate was everything that I’d think of when it comes to authentic Polish food.  The actual Polish Combo comes with three different kinds of Pierogies, three mushroom and sauerkraut, three beef, and three potato and cheese. It also comes with two Kielbasa and sauerkraut, their signature Red Cabbage Coleslaw, and my favorite, the cabbage roll.  The roll is a pork and rice stuffed cabbage in a sweet dill tomato sauce. For desert, we were brought an array of eye pleasing, and taste satisfying deserts.  With Crepes Suzette, Crème brulee, and the Homemade European Style Cheesecake being featured, I thought the crème brulee had a very pleasing taste (can’t go wrong with crystallized sugar!) The wine list is also something of great mention, with the exclusive Bordeaux wine from the French Region of Bordeaux making an appearance.
