A Taste of the Mediterranean at Wild Olives Cafe

Monday, May 10th, 2010 | Posted in Palm Beach | No Comments »

By Sonya Mucker

Just when a 3 course meal at a Todd English restaurant was exactly what I need to start my week, TasteCasting delivered my wish this past Monday. For those of you that don’t know, the TasteCasting team is made up of a group of food bloggers, that upon invitation, go into select restaurants, receive a sampling of the restaurant’s food and in exchange blog about their experience.

Upon entering the restaurant and not knowing what quite to expect at my first TasteCasting, the restaurant was quiet. Charlie, our attentive waiter offered me a refreshing glass of prosecco right away and kept them coming throughout the evening. As our crowd of 7 fine food connoisseurs gathered and made introductions, our high-top tables were happily adorned with Fig & Prosciutto Flatbread, as well as a Crispy Eggplant Flatbread.

The Fig & Prosciutto Flatbread started with a sweet taste of fig jam and ended with the savory taste of prosciutto that did not disappoint. The crispy eggplant was anything but sweet, yet still packed the flavor of a mild eggplant and the punch of basil leaves.

Our first course started with the asparagus frites, lightly fried and topped with tangy arugula and honey mustard aioli, which gave the asparagus a smooth flavor.

The second course featured a tasty ‘Brooklyn Style’ Spaghetti Polpetinne with small meatballs, roasted tomato sauce and parmesan.

Butternut Squash Lasagna accompanied the spaghetti and offered a well-balanced sweetness between maple crème and herbed ricotta.

Course number three offered a wasabi-crusted Tuna, cooked to order by my preference. The tuna lay atop a ginger-carrot glaze which offset the spicy wasabi and cracked pepper flavors embedded in the crust.

My personal highlight of the evening was the organic brick over Roasted Chicken cooked to perfection with a porcini crust and roasted garlic glaze. The roasted chicken sat on top of a potato cake, green beans with bacon. One bite of each of made a perfect tasting that left me full through lunch the next day.

Celebrate Classic American Food at Village Tavern

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 | Posted in Palm Beach | 1 Comment »

drinkWhenever I go out with my TasteCasting team, I know I’m in for an experience filled with laughter, generosity and a few hours of tasting my way through a restaurant’s menu. There are no light meals allowed when it comes to TasteCasting (or when it comes to anything having to do with working for DINE), and our latest restaurant filled our stomachs with surprisingly tasty offerings. I will admit, I still get nervous when visiting chains, as you just never know what you are getting yourself into.

Our latest TasteCasting event took us to Village Tavern in Boynton Beach, an upscale and modern bar and restaurant offering guests a little of everything where guests can gather in a sophisticated atmosphere to gather after work or spend their weekend cheering on their favorite sports team. (They do have some flat screens in the bar area.) As their motto says, it brings people together to celebrate classic American food — and that we did. The night began in the bar area, where we perused the menu waiting for the group to arrive. While the team was quite impressed with the large selection of wines by the glass (60+ wines ranging in price from $2.75-$14.00 a glass) and the beer menu (including draft, imported and craft beers), Village Tavern does get some points for being creative, though a little too sweet for me, with their cocktails. While you could definitely sit down for dinner in the bar area, and either sit at the bar, in a comfortable booth or at one of the high tops, we chose just to gather here to wait for the entire group to arrive.

While the bar area was buzzing and might be considered a bit noisy by some, the dining room was more relaxed — perfect for all age ranges and group sizes — and both evoked a contemporary tavern-like feel with the dark woods and subdued lighting. We moved into the back area of the restaurant and were ready for our feast to begin. And I’m not kidding when I say feast.

Let the eating begin!

Maryland-Style Crab Cake

The menu at Village Tavern has something for everyone. From burgers and pizzas to seafood, steaks and pastas to small plates and salads — all will be satisfied.

This is what we discovered.

Spinach Salad with Poppyseed Dressing

Spinach Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing

Why you should run to Village Tavern:

  • Steamed Mussels – These sweet, tender Prince Edwards mussels were steamed and set in a broth of garlic, shallots and white wine broth. A touch of pesto was added to the mix to make this a favorite of the table. I don’t think we left a drop in the bowl, as sopping up the broth with the garlic bread, was just as satisfying.
  • Spinach Salad – This brought a myriad of flavors and textures together in every bite. Fresh spinach leaves, grape tomatoes, spiced pecans, slices of Granny Smith apples, bleu cheese, craisins and a sliced hard-boiled egg were lightly tossed in a sweet poppy seed dressing. And to add to this already sought-after salad, the moist apple muffin served alongside the salad, packed a burst of flavor into every bite.
  • Grouper Hemingway – This piece of mild and firm grouper filet was served atop angel hair pasta that was tossed with sauce of lemon, garlic, butter and capers. The lemon and caper flavors were strong, though not overwhelming to me, but be sure you do like capers or this will not be the dish for you.
  • Grilled Rainbow Trout – The sweet soy glaze added a salty sweetness to this delicate piece of fish. It was served with a collection of sauteed vegetables and a scoop of rice to satisfy my never-ending yearning for Asian flavors.
  • Banana Crepes – Combining the comforting flavors and textures of ice cream, chocolate, fruit and crepes together — this was a sinful ending to the meal. The quest to get a bit of all of the elements together in every bite, made for a challenging, yet oh-so worthwhile tasting sensation to finish off our meal.
  • They have a diversified menu that will satisfy the pickiest eaters. It is a chain, something on the line of J. Alexander’s or Houston’s, but in some cases, like this one, being a chain is not a bad thing. They take pride in offering both fantastic customer service, and nearly every menu item is made from scratch.

Not worth the calories:

  • Organic Pink Sangria – While this exotic take on a traditional sangria recipe sounded fabulous, my mouth was left filled with a sugary sweetness, and I was quickly ready to switch drinks.
  • Tavern Salad – While this might be their signature salad, it’s rather boring and tastes more like a chopped up Iceberg lettuce topped with Italian dressing. Skip this and go with the spinach salad instead.
  • Spaghetti Squash and Zucchini – So I was craving some vegetables on the day of our tasting and even added some juicy scallops to liven it up, but it did nothing for me and remained on the plate.
  • Pan-Seared Scallops – I found these to be uninspired. They were served with a staple of mashed potatoes and green beans. They weren’t bad, but there were many better items on the menu.

You can’t forget their weekly highlights –

During happy hour, Village Tavern offers every cocktail for half price in both the bar area and on the patio. Happy hour runs M-F (4:30-6:30 pm), M-Th (9:00-11:00 pm) and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 pm – 1:00 am.

Wednesdays are also called Wine & Dine Wednesdays. Enjoy more than 60 wines by the glass for only half price. This means that their already insanely cheap wine for only $2.75 is now less than $2.00. While this might not be the ideal choice for the more sophisticated wine drinkers, you can also get a glass of Conundrum for only $6.00 on Wednesdays.

If you like to dine early (between 3:30 – 5:30 pm), you can save money. 2 salads and 2 pizzas or flat breads can be enjoyed for $20. You can also share 1 appetizer and 2 entrees (from their special list of 5) for $25.

If you’d like to view the rest of the photos from Village Tavern, I’ve made a slide show.

Saturday, November 21st, 2009 | Posted in Palm Beach | 3 Comments »

Get ready Boca Raton — you are home to the newest restaurant by celebrity chef and heartthrob, Todd English — scheduled to officially open later this month. Wild Olives by Todd English, his latest concept, will take over the space previously occupied by Opus 5. While a few menu items have graced the nightly specials over the last few weeks, the dinner menu will debut on November 24, while the lunch menu follows on November 30 — the decor will change in April 2010.

While that’s still a few days away, my TasteCasting crew was luckily invited in for a complimentary sneak peek at what’s to come – gourmands rejoice – there was a reason I had to sit through a tantalizing 8-course wine pairing dinner. I know, my job is rough.

When you dine at Wild Olives, you will be able to find a selection of classic, familiar dishes associated with Todd English – including his sweet and savory fig & prosciutto pizza (a must-try taste sensation) – combined with new gourmet delights. Your taste buds are sure to be awakened by this fresh, ingredient-focused, culinary tour of the Mediterranean. And if you want your experience to be doubled in satisfaction, be sure to have them add a wine pairing to your courses of choice – they do an extraordinary job.

bread

Let the journey begin — When we sat down at the table, we were welcomed with the Caramelized Onion Focaccia served with Olive Tapenade. Warm, fresh bread with a hint of sweetness went nicely with the tapenade and made for a great first impression to our meal. This combined with the plate of antipasti and a glass of Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut made us realize that we were in for a night to remember.

Next in line was the signature Carpet Bagger Oysters. Get ready for this succulent aphrodasiac. Combine a lightly fried oyster and thinly sliced beef carpaccio laid atop truffle whipped potatoes and you have a marriage of meat and potatoes that no one can resist.

Tuna Tartare

Equally delicious was the Tuna Tartare with crispy rock shrimp, warm sesame dressing and white fish caviar. For me, I didn’t feel it needed the shrimp, but the fresh, simple flavors were palate-pleasing and delicious.

Boston Bibb

The Boston Bibb salad with shaved red onion, Maytag cheese and walnut vinaigrette brought out the garden-fresh simple flavors.

Butternut Tortelli

Hungry still? You better be, as there were plenty more to come and now it was time for a comforting dish of a classic Todd English pasta – his Butternut Tortelli with brown butter and fried sage. This rich combination of sweet and savory was one of my favorites, but be sure to get a combined fork full of the pasta, cheese and fried sage in every bite to enjoy this perfect myriad of flavors. There’s no going back to spaghetti with meat sauce now.

Swordfish with Asparagus Risotto

After an intermezzo of lemon sorbet, plates of grilled swordfish were set before us. This fresh fish was cut into a thick steak, grilled perfectly and then set atop a rich asparagus risotto and then finished off with a warm shrimp vinaigrette. Once again, simple flavors made the ingredients shine and I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. My only problem was that I wish it had come earlier in the evening, as I was getting mighty stuffed at this point.

Brown Sugar Rib-Eye

We’ve almost made it to the end, but we weren’t allowed to stop quite yet. It was time for a comforting dish of meat and potatoes. The sweet flavors of the Brown Sugar Rib-Eye with silky parmesan whipped potatoes paired nicely with the BR Cohn Cabernet. While not necessarily my favorite of the evening, I’m sure others will find this palate-pleasing.

cheesecake

And, the finale — Todd’s Signature Ricotta Cheesecake paired with a glass of sweet Far Niente Dolce — a team favorite.

Upscale Bar Food and Live Music at Gatsby’s

Sunday, October 11th, 2009 | Posted in Palm Beach | 1 Comment »

Our latest TasteCasting adventure in South Florida was to Gatsby’s in Boca Raton. One of three locations in Florida, Gatsby’s brings patrons gourmet bar fare and live music in a comfortable setting. Set in a strip mall just off of Military Trail, Gatsby’s has been a staple in Boca Raton for quite some time, and with new owners in the Boca Raton location, there’s some great positive energy inside.

DSCN1526Once you step inside, we were immediately drawn to the lively bar scene. The chairs were filled with co-workers gathering after work, lively sports fans and close friends meeting to catch up on the past week. You could easily spend your entire night at the bar, but then you would be missing out, as Gatsby’s offers a room for private functions, pool tables in the back and live music on the weekends.

We had our event on a Friday night. We met in the private back room. This back space is perfect for any private function. Lots of space, pool tables, a private bar, friendly service – what more could you ask for? After enjoying a few cocktails (they have a great martini list), we made our way into the main room so we could hear the live music. On this particular evening, the band The Edge was playing. Before the music though, a little tasting was in order.

Lamb Chops

Lamb Chops

The menu at Gatsby’s offers more than your typical bar fare. Sure you can find your burgers, chicken wings, pizzas and fried calamari, but it’s that and so much more. One thing to note is that their food is fresh and it is made from scratch, a welcome addition to any bar menu. Plates of their signature dishes lined our table – flat bread, steamed pork dumplings and lamb chops served with a sundried cherry-mango chutney came out and were eaten right up. And since we had to get a better feel for their menu, we did taste some of their calamari, their grilled tenderloin sliders and the Southwestern Chicken Wrap also, the Chicken Wrap being a group favorite.

While the food filled our bellies up, it was the relaxed feel of Gatsby’s and the addition of live music that really made our night. The Edge is a Boca favorite and they play at Gatsby’s on a regular basis. They captured the feel of the audience, and made us jump on the dance floor.   If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere with a neighborhood feel, live music or even a place for late night eats, Gatsby’s might be just what you are looking for.

They offer nightly specials (each location is different though).

In Boca, Mondays are Martini Nights – $5 Martinis. Tuesdays are 2 for Tuesdays. Wednesdays are Ladies Night. On Thursdays it is Beat the Clock Night. Fridays it is the Ultimat Happy Hour. On Fridays and Saturdays there is live music and on Sundays, it is In the Biz night.

Gatsby’s is located at 5970 SW 18th Street in Boca Raton. (561) 393-3900 There are also locations in Davie and Kendall.

Palm Beach TasteCasting Team Kicks Off with a Fantastic Wine Dinner at Secrets Piano Bar

Saturday, September 5th, 2009 | Posted in Palm Beach | 3 Comments »

1diningOver the past few months, I have been promoting a new project of mine called TasteCasting and last week we kicked it off with a bang at Secrets Piano Bar in North Palm Beach.

What is TasteCasting?

TasteCasting is a group of socially connected people who enjoy all aspects of social media (twitter, facebook, etc.), enjoy great food and sharing their experiences. Our team connects with restaurants and other establishments who are looking to build awareness of their location, announce grand openings, special menu items or special promotions.

Welcome to Secrets Piano Bar & Grill

Secrets Piano Bar and Grill is located at the Windsor Gardens Hotel in North Palm Beach. This is a secret gem in the area. I had driven by this location multiple times without knowing a fantastic restaurant existed inside. But once you are inside, you know you won’t be leaving anytime soon, especially if you happen to arrive for one of their monthly wine dinners.

Chef Joe Angelucci

Chef Joe Angelucci radiates with love and excitement for creativity in the kitchen. Although, he runs the kitchen during the week, his wine dinners are what he surely looks forward to, and you are sure to have one of the best meals you’ve had in a long time. Chef Joe has a culinary background that many of us would be jealous of. In addition to having apprenticed under James Beard Award-Winning Chef Michael McNally, he’s also spent time in the kitchens of Barton G. and the Versace Mansion.

Wine Dinners

The wine dinner we attended had a wild game theme – elk, venison, peasant, Elysian Fields lamb – were the focus tonight. Four members of our TasteCasting team came prepared with our cameras and cell phones in hand, ready to tweet about our experience.

The evening began with Seared Elk Carpaccio with Baby Arugula, Truffled Dijon Aioli and Meyer Lemon served with a Mission Fig and Apple Chutney. This was paired with a Manifesto Sauvignon Blanc. The combination of the Pyrat marinated elk, peppery arugula and sweetness of the Mission Figs and apples was an amazing play on flavors and textures. Chef Joe hit this course right on.

Wild Game Pheasant with Chantarelle Cognac Sauce

Wild Game Pheasant with Chantarelle Cognac Sauce

Next in line was the Wild Game Pheasant with Chanterelle Cognac Sauce and Chestnut Rice paired with a Wishing Tree Shiraz. The crunchy skin on the pheasant combined with the smoked paprika and the creamy chanterelle made this my favorite dish of the evening. And I didn’t think I would be much of a fan of wild game?

The play on flavors and mouth-watering courses didn’t stop there, and the Elysian Fields Lamb with Trumpet Mushroom, a Red Wine Reduction and Caramelized Root Vegetables was next up. Although this dish was tasty, the winner of this course was the wine – a Whetstone Jon Boat Pinot Noir. It was bursting with flavors of bing cherry and sassafras tea. Wowza! It’s been added to my list of favorites.

Chocolate Sachertorte

Chocolate Sachertorte

Even if we were getting full, we were out of luck because more deliciousness was on its way. The last course of the evening was a Chocolate Sachertorte with Fresh Berries and a Meeker Fro-Zin. Rich, chocolate sweetness made for a perfect ending to our experience.

Since we were at Secrets Piano Bar, what would I night out be without a little live entertainment throughout the event? Relaxing piano music and even some crowd participation, as we ended the night with a little rendition of Piano Man (video included).

This was a perfect first TasteCasting experience. Special thanks goes out to Chef Joe Angelucci, Kyle Pintarelli, director of Food & Beverage and the entire TasteCasting team.

Secrets Piano Bar & Grill is located at 11360 US Highway 1 in North Palm Beach. (561) 844-8448

In addition to offering amazing month wine dinners, the price is extremely reasonable – only $49.95 ++ for five courses and five wines. They also offer a special 3-course dinner special for only $19.09, honor of Palm Beach County’s 100 year anniversary and they have a great $5 bar menu.

If you are a fan of Chef Joe’s and are looking for a meeting room for your next private party, happy hour, networking function or holiday party, the Windsor Gardens has the perfect room for you. Instead, of having it catered with some mediocre food, Chef Joe will be planning the menu for your event at the Windsor Gardens Hotel. Even better, if you book your party and mention TasteCasting, you will receive 20% off the cost of your meeting room space.

If you would like to attend one of their wine dinners, be sure to contact Kyle for future dates and more information.
