Dunkin’ Donuts Dog Days of Summer Event

Sunday, July 25th, 2010 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

New location to Columbus

TasteCasters were invited to the newest location of Dunkin’ Donuts to experience the new drinks and several new menu items. This location at 6144 East Main in Reynoldsburg was hosting a fund raiser for the Columbus area humane society and shelter. A portion of the days proceeds went to help out this worthy cause.

The New Sandwiches

We were treated to samples of their flatbread sandwiches and grilled wraps. All the food was tasty but the frozen drinks stole the show.

The Coolattas

Need to cool off in this heat? Try one of the Coolattas or design your own. These frozen drinks will hit to spot on a hot summer day. Ask for the piña colada. This drink will be entered into the national manager’s contest in August. We had a taste of this creation and it was just fantastic. Watch the video to hear how it was created.

Taste of Powell 2010

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

top logo

Several members of the Tastecasting team recently attended Taste of Powell, on Thursday April 29, 2010 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.  What is great about these “Taste of” events is that you get to try samples of menu items and specialty dishes of various restaurants and food establishments without dropping serious $$ on an entrée, only to find you didn’t like it. However, we were not disappointed at any of the many items we tasted that evening.

Featured restaurantsTaste of Powell at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

The first ever Taste of Powell, sponsored by The Greater Powell Area Chamber of Commerce, featured a mix of 16 restaurants, including a country club, a banquet center, and a wholesale club. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium proved to be the perfect venue to host this event.  In fact, a few of the animals were on hand to welcome us!

Bridgewater Banquet & Conference Center

Chocolate cupcakes from Bridgewater Banquet & Conference Center

Bridgewater offers full-service event planning and catering with an executive chef on staff, a full liquor license, and state-of-the-art AV system.  You cannot have an event without decadent chocolate mini-cupcakes with chocolate frosting.  These were to die for.

Cakes of Distinction by Bachman’s

They went to a lot of trouble to bake three kinds of cupcakes (Kahlua Fudge, Lemon, Carrot Cake) , individually wrap, and label them. This was obviously a “take-home, eat later” item. Because most of the guests seemed to be chocoholics, the Kahlua Fudge cupcakes were going fast.  I had to grab one before they were gone.

Cupcakes from Bachman's Cakes of Distinction

Costco

We all know Costco is the best place in central Ohio to buy food and supplies for your mega-family while feeding them all on the same shopping trip through the store. Quote from my Twitter feed: “The only thing better than free samples from Costco is having them all on one table.” Costco rocks!

Culvers of Powell

Although Culvers has an extensive menu including burgers, sandwiches, and salads, its signature frozen custard was what we sampled. I tried the chocolate ice cream (custard) with M&M’s topping. Good stuff! There are nearly 30 different toppings you can get to build your own sundae.

Culver's of Powell

Dream Dinners

Dan sampled the food and chatted with the owners. “This service is very interesting for those of us with busy schedules and home life,” he explained.  “As I talked to the owners of the Powell location I found out they prepare the tasty meals for you with fresh ingredients, and give you step-by-step instructions on how to quickly prepare the meal in minutes, saving you a tremendous amount of time.”  The team served pieces of really tender chicken covered in a delicious stir-fry sauce with a small side of jasmine rice. “This was a terrific combination of tastes,” said Dan, “and one of my favorites.”

Easy Street Cafe

Ok, how did a German Village restaurant sneak into Taste of Powell?! Somehow I missed sampling their fare, but found this recent review on a local vegetarian’s blog. Easy Street Cafe Review.

Flyers Pizza & Subs

Flyers Pizza

Flyers puts broccoli on its vegetarian pizza, so it already gets a “thumbs up” from me. Guests could spin the wheel for a chance to win free pizzas or t-shirts. Elizabeth and I each won a t-shirt, so of course, we are more likely to recommend Flyers Pizza to our friends.

Gooseneck Tavern

A selection of small salads was served from the team from the Gooseneck Tavern. Dan tried the Asian Chicken Salad. His observation: “It was light, contained fruit and nuts, fresh lettuce, romaine and the dressing was a nice finishing touch.”

Jet’s Pizza

Jet’s Pizza served pizza by the slice. Pizza-lover and fellow Tastecaster Dan Harris couldn’t stop at one slice.  “As a lover of pepperoni and cheese, I really enjoyed the soft buttery crust on the hand-tossed pep and cheese,” he commented. “ I liked it so much I went back for seconds.”

Greek Express

Greek Express serves authentic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in a fast, casual setting. Dan says: “The team at Greek Express were friendly and very passionate about the food they serve. I sampled the hummus and pita bread, and enjoyed every bite.”

Shrimp Salad Rolls from Kogen's

If you’re a sushi fan, this was the place to hang out. The chefs were making one of their signature items, Crunchy Shrimp Salad Rolls, right in front of us. It was served with a side of ginger, wasabi, soy sauce and real chopsticks. You really couldn’t eat just one.

Liberty Tavern

Kahlua Shrimp (entrée, and tavern favorite). A jumbo shrimp, sautéed in a sweet and spicy Kahlua butter sauce, with creamy risotto. Yes, you can taste a little of the Kahlua, but it will not clash with your wine. This was one of the more popular items.

Kahlua Shrimp from Liberty Tavern

Local Roots

Local Roots' Sweet Chili-Glazed Chicken w/Corn & Black Bean Risotto

Sweet chili-glazed chicken with corn & black bean risotto. Very flavorful, this small sample was very filling. Or perhaps it was the too many extra shrimp salad rolls previously sampled.

The Lost Shepherd

Carolina Crab Dip appetizer. Served warm, it had a good rich flavor.  It was delicious enough to have a second helping. The dip was served with warm flatbread.

Carolina Crab Dip from The Lost Shepherd

Bruschetta ala Shepherd (unofficial name: “Tomato tomahto.”) Roasted Ciabatta bread topped with basil-sundried tomato pesto and fresh mozzarella, on a bed of balsamic spinach. It went very well with the Chardonnay I was drinking.

Luce Enotica

Porchetta, Luce Enoteca

Porchetta.  An Italian-style roasted pork, this was carved in front of us and served as mini-sandwiches, with a choice of sauces.  I highly recommend the Habanero mustard for the extra spicy “kick.”

Scioto Reserve Country Club

Scioto Reserve's Pecan Chicken w/Port Wine & Cherry Sauce over Israeli Couscous

Scioto Reserve does weddings, and offered TOP guests a sample of one of its entrees. Pecan chicken with port wine and cherry sauce, over Israeli couscous. Presentation is everything. The wine and cherry sauce added a unique flavor to this dish.

Local entertainment

Listening to good jams from Arnett Howard

The evening wouldn’t have been complete without Columbus’ own Arnett Howard entertaining guests with their contemporary pop and jazz music.

A successful event

Taste of Powell 2010 proved to be a successful event. It put the spotlight on the Powell community, and gave local restaurants an opportunity to showcase their specialties and signature dishes. Thank you to the Greater Powell Area Chamber of Commerce for inviting us!

Cafe 3030

Sunday, April 4th, 2010 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

Tucked away in the brand new Four Points Sheraton Hotel is a restaurant the TasteCasting team learned about and wanted to share with you. We were invited to do a TasteCasting at the Café 3030 to announce to Columbus that they welcome the local crowd for just hanging out for a drink or dinning with friends. They also wish the local folks to know about their private dinning rooms which can be used for many types of events. With free WiFi it is the perfect place for a business meeting.

Located right by Port Columbus off of N Cassady Ave. on Plaza Properties Boulevard, which does not show up on a lot of maps yet, it can be a bit tricky to find. Plaza Properties Boulevard is well marked so if you can find Cassady Ave. it is just North of Airport Dr. or Rt. 62.

A New Facility

This is a new facility completed last year. It is of a modern design but very comfortable. The natural wood makes for a warm but bright and airy atmosphere.

Private Dinning

We spent our time in the private dinning area off the main dinning room. What a great space for a business meeting. The free WiFi with the flat screen TV offers just what you need.

Handcrafted Brews

We were first treated to a cocktail. They offer all the favorite drinks but also offer some fantastic local handcrafted brews. Café 3030 serves breakfast and dinner but soon to serve lunch also.

Appetizers

quesadillaswingsWe found the appetizers to be very tasty. We tasted the Hot Wings, Breaded Chicken Fingers and Chicken Quesadillas. The appetizer with a drink and a few friends would make a great mid afternoon.

Entrees

meat loafsaladWe were treated to a main course of delicious Meat Loaf, mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked broccoli. They also served us their Great Cob Salad. OMG If you need veggies this is the order to place. Words can’t explain the magnificent of this dish. Chicken, cheese, bacon, cucumber, and much more make this a must try.

Desert

desertWe had cheese cake and Girl Scout cookies for desert. I was much imprested that they would buy cookies from \local girl scouts to serve in their restaurant.

Marks speaks of what Cafe 3030 has to offer.

TasteCasters want to thank Kristin and Mark for a wonderful TasteCasting event at Café 3030

    Massey’s Pizza

    massey's pizza

Massey's Pizza animationThe TasteCasting Team was invited to Massey’s Pizza a local family owned business of ten locations around the Columbus Metro area. Founded in 1949, it is the oldest pizzaria in the area. The name comes from the two Massey brothers who along with Romeo Siri and Guidoh Casa started serving pizza to the columbus crowd out of the Romeo’s Italian Restaurant on West Fifth Avenue. Since then the dough recipe has been perfected and Dave and Jim Pallone carry on the tradition serving the Columbus area and air delivering pizzas to fans who have moved out of the area. Only the finest fresh ingredients are used, most of which are purchased from local vendors. The sub buns come from Auddino’s bakery here in Columbus. This doesn’t make Massey’s the chepest pizza but we found the small extra cost is well worth it.

    THREE GREAT PIZZAS

food4We tried three great pizzas, a pepperoni which is Massey’s original flagship pizza, a four cheese pizza and the BLT. All were prepaired with thin crust which is baked in special ovens seperated from the steal oven rack only by a layer of corn meal. The pepperoni pizza is said to have 155 locally make pepperoni pieces. I did not count all of them, but food3the pie was covered edge to edge. The four cheese pizza is a great option for those who want to avoid meat. Containing mozzaretta, provolone, cheddar and parmesan cheeses, this is a cheese lovers dream. And then there was the BLT. I had never dreamed of a pizza food5with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonaise. This was both a suprise and a delite. I am a pizza lover from way back and this was a new one on me. The BLT will be a favorite of mine from now on.

    TWO GREAT SUBS

food1We were treated to two of their subs. The Great Guido Italian Sub which is the flagship sub and the standard for all Italian subs in Columbus. The sliced pepperoni, ham, salami and provolone food2cheese on a fresh baked bun topped with veggies and Marzetti’s golden italian dressing was a huge hit with the tasters. The second sub we tried was the meatball sub. It is said to be one of the top sellers and we could tell why. The fresh bun was loaded with meatballs, provolone and the pizza sauce that Massey’s is known for.

The TasteCasters of Columbus want to thank Massey’s Pizza for inviting us to such a wonderful evening of Italian greatness.

You can fan Massey’s at facebook.com/masseyspizza, follow them at Twitter.com/MasseysPizza and email them at info@masseyspizza. If you live elsewhere, you get information on ordering at http://MasseysByMail.com.

    Impero Coffee Roasters

    Monday, January 25th, 2010 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

    banner

Visiting the short north is one of my favorite things to do so I was happy to accept an invitation by the folks at Impero Coffee Roasters to conduct a TasteCasting at their new location. Located between Hubbard and Prescott on the west side of High St. at in the short north, their coffee house serves the folks of this neighborhood as well as people who look at the short north as a destination. Ask for the pascode for free Wifi.

Trent Fannin talks about Impero Coffee Roasters

    Roasters of Coffee

Impero Coffee Roasters are first roasters of coffee. Their roasting facility is in Grove City. They import green coffee beans from all the locations around the world known for great coffee. Their roasting operation supplies fresh roasted coffee to restaurants and coffee houses around the Columbus area. A visit to their Grove City roasting location is in the planning stage so watch for a blog post of that visit soon. We will show the journey from roasting in air poppers in the basement to the first class operation of today.

    The Coffee

coffee gifThe coffee house in the short north is an extension of the roasting operation. The bean-to-cup process is handled as an art form. This is evident in every respect. The space is arranged so you are always intimate with the brewing process. Each drink creation is visible to all as it is created and served. The drinks are not only pleasing to the eyes but are truly delicious. This location is also a retail outlet for their roasted beans. You can purchase your favorite and enjoy the taste of their great coffee at home. If tea is your thing, they have teamed up with Tehku Tea Company of Dublin, Oh. offering a good variety of premium teas.

    Simple Sweets

sweet gifAs with most coffee houses they offer something for your sweet tooth. Simple Sweets, located in Clintonville, supplies them with marvelous pastries, scones and cheese cakes.

    The Food

The food menu is much more extensive than you would normally find at a coffee house. Their alliance with Lavash Café allows them to offer a great menu. The TasteCasting group was treated to quite a spread. We started off with a chicken vegetable soup ($2.50). The soup had lots of great flavors and a secret spice which I was not able to identify but very tasty. An appetizer of Hummus/Spicy Blackbean Hummus ($3.75-$7.25) served with pita was next. food gif The spicy blackbean was my favorite. I must learn how to make the blackbean hummus. The Fatayer spinach and Feta cheese appetizer ($2.95) offered was like a hot pocket but much better. The pastry was medium density and filled with tasty spinach and feta. For a filling lunch I would reconmend the Shawarma of Lamb ($5.95). The harty portion of lamb meat was combined with cucumber, tomato and a fantastic sauce in a pita pocket. They have two entree choices. The Lavvash Comvo is a vegetarain dish ($7.95). Shawarma (Lamb or Chicken) is the second ($9.95). We tried the Lamb. It is a harty portion of sliced lamb meat with a drizze of greak sauce served with salad, hummus, and pita. Would make a very nice dinner choice.

If for a breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a stop for coffee, The Impero Coffee Roaster’s location in the short north is a place to experience. The staff is friendly and knowlable, the space is comfortable and the food is terific.

I want to thank the folks of Impero Coffee Roasters for a great TasteCasting experience.

    The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe

    Authentic Mediterranean Cuisine in Hilliard

Just outside of downtown Hilliard, tucked in a retail plaza between Tinapple Rd. and Gillette Ave you will find The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe. Located at 3185 Hilliard Rome Road, in Hilliard, Ohio 43026 you find the authentic taste of the Mediterranean and Greek tradition. The Olive Tree Cafe was the 2009 winner of Best of Columbus in the Ethnic Establishment category. Congratulations to David and Tammy Mor.

    IMG_7351IMG_7269

An Incredibly Rich and Diverse Menu

The evening started out with David and Tammy Mor describing the menu they had in store for us. I knew we were in for a treat when the ingredients sounded like poetry. David told us about the cheeses, vegetables, greens, herbs, and spices they used to prepare the menu. On this night we were treated to:

    Hummus Ful

Hummus Ful, Tammy described this dish as homemade hummus topped with warm fava beans and seasoned with just the right amounts of olive oil, cumin, cilantro, garlic and lemon. Served with the freshly baked, homemade pita bread. The fava beans were terrific. They reminded me of the wonderful navy bean dishes my grandmother used to make. David pointed out to the table this was not only delicious, but good for you. Healthy and delicious works for me. Do you like it HOT? If you’re into hot and spicy you can have it your way. Just ask for the hot pepper puree. All you need is a touch. Mix it into the hummus and you’ll enjoy the flavors in a whole new way. Just be very careful. Not too much.

    Pastitsio

    IMG_7338

The Pastitsio is the Mediterranean version of lasagna. The difference we were told was pastitsio is made with large tubular pasta, the meat used was ground beef and marinara tomato sauce. This was all topped with a thick and creamy béchamel sauce. It looks as good as it tastes.

    Sharwarma

    IMG_7333

Up next we sampled the The Olive Tree Sharwarma. We sampled both the Chicken and the Beef. The meat was sliced and prepared with Middle Eastern spices and grilled with green peppers, tomatoes and of course served over their homemade hummus with fresh baked pita bread. I like it hot so I added a touch of the hot pepper puree and the flavor was a pure delight.

    Rice Pudding

    IMG_7346

I finished up the evening with the homemade Rice Pudding. It was warm, creamy, had a great texture and the cinnamon sprinkled on top added just enough sweet to make it a treat. New to the Olive Tree in 2010 is the Mediterranean wine selection.

    Taste Authentic Mediterranean For Yourself

David and Tammy invite you out to experience the taste of the Mediterranean for yourself. Their passion for quality and service is obvious in person. You can tell when you talk to them the love they have for the food they prepare and serve. A kids menu is available and this is place you can bring your entire family. There is something for everyone. You can call ahead and reserve a table for a special occasion.

    Taste of Belgium

    Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

    IMG_0058

north marketI don’t get to the North Market often enough. As a lunch destination, it offers much variety. I am here today along with other TasteCasters to check out The Taste of Belgium. We have been invited to their new location at the north-west entrance of the North Market.

AJ met us on our early arrival and allowed us behind the scenes access to the operation to take photos. He explained how the equipment was used to produce a very distinctive product. The special waffle irons are designed by them and are available for rent. They have plans to sell the irons after a few design changes. The special ingredients are of importance as well…. some coming all the way from Belgium.

    The Waffles

foodThey make great authentic Belgian waffles which are sweetened with beat sugar imported from Belgium. This is the only place this special type of sugar can be located. The waffles are toped with your choice of toppings. We were treated to a waffle toped with large black berries and whipped cream. A very good pairing but believe me the waffles are very good with out the toppings. They sell hot ready to eat to customers at the North Market and offer packs of 4 to take home and reheat in a toaster. Delicious, popular and portable… The Liège waffle is a sweet snack that can be enjoyed any time of day or night. The original taste and texture of the cast iron press can be easily refreshed by heating the waffle in the comfort of your home. Simply pop it in a convection oven or toast it like a bagel. Get the history of this authentic waffle at their web site http://www.tastefrombelgium.com/.

    The Crepes

If it is too strange for you to imagine waffles for lunch, they produce crepes of all kinds. The Spinach-Goat Cheese-Balsamic-Peppers lunch crepe was my favorite. They offer one that is like a Ruben with corned beef and sauerkraut. We tried one with the crepe made from buckwheat batter. Watch as AJ makes a Lunch Crepe.

    The Coffee

They offer coffee drinks to compliment their food items. When I evaluate an establishment’s coffee, I first try a shot of espresso. I found their espresso the best I have had in Columbus. It was not the least bit bitter and the crème was light brown and uniform. Another TasteCaster had a cappuccino and said it was superb. I have found if a good espresso can be produced the rest of the coffee drinks will be equally good. The Taste of Belgium passed the test.

TasteCasting want to thank Jean-Francois Flechet and his crew for an enjoyable lunch hour at The Taste of Belgium.

Average Joe’s is Far From Average

The owners of Average Joe’s invited us out to their brand new New Albany pub and grill located 4949 E. Dublin-Granville Rd, in Columbus. You can find it just off 161 East. It

You can get there easily using the Little Turtle Way exit and shoot down E. Dublin-Granville Rd. It will be on your left. If you see Urban Fitness you have gone to far. If you’re on 161 East and miss the Little Turtle Way just exit Hamilton Road and back track. There’s also an Average Joe’s operated by the same owners near Polaris at 8453 Sancus Blvd. in Columbus.

The pub is an open, airy design with plenty of table tops, bar stools, and booths to accommodate any size party day or night. I can honestly say I have never been in a pub that had 25 huge LCD flat panels broadcasting simultaneously. No matter where you are in the establishment, you have a terrific view.

    Fabulous Food, Fun and Friends

This was unique experience for the TasteCasting team. Our host Paul Rockwell asked us to order whatever we would like to try off the menu and he guaranteed we’d like it. It took a few minutes to take in the extensive menu. Each of us picked something different. There were Chicken Quesadillas made with grilled chicken with what looked like mixed melted cheese and serve with a side of lettuce, tomato, sour cream and salsa. The sliders where a huge hit. The Chicken sliders with chedder cheese and fries went well with the Blue Moon. Another member of the team tried the chili and onion rings made it to the table too. Paul was right. Everything we had was terrific and the staff waiting on us were wonderful.

    IMG_6752IMG_6757IMG_6735

    There Is Something For Everyone

    Watch the Big Games

With all those big flat panel LCDs this is the perfect spot to watch any and all sports. Coming up soon is New Year’s Day and this would be an amazing place to cheer our Buckeyes on to victory in the Rose Bowl.

    Play Euchre

the groupLast night the Tastecasting gang and the Meet-2-Eat group were treated to a variety of the  items offered at The Columbus Sandwich Company which is located at 201 Clint Drive in Pickerington, OH.  The Columbus Sandwich Company was celebrating their one year anniversary while hosting the TasteCasting group.

Owner Lad Dilgard comes from a logistics  background and uses his expertice to run a very organized operation.  In addition to serving walk-ins, they also do catering in Fairfield and Franklin counties and  provide food to 12  coffee shops in Columbus and surrounding areas.  They offer a 10% discount to Pharmaceutical and Medical Sales reps, and to teachers and school administration officials for catering orders.

Animate 1Their biggest seller by far is a wrap called the Columbus Metro Chicken Salad.  It was a big hit with tasters last night, myself included.  It’s homemade chicken salad made with basil mayo, lettuce, tomato, cashews, and a hint of spicy Thai sauce.  Very tasty with a nice little kick!   They also serve toasted wraps with melted cheeses which were wonderful on a cold rainy night .  They offer a couple of soups to help warm you up also.  During the winter months they offer Tomato Bisque and a Creamy Chicken Noodle.  The sides offered are Homemade Potato Salad, which Lad said is addictive and  I can see that.  It’s made with sour cream.  The other side is a Bowtie Dill Pasta Salad.

They use only high grade meat in their products and you can taste the difference.  The menu items are all named with a Columbus landmark reference.

Animate 2They offer some veggie options that I look forward to trying. For example, there is the Scioto Trail Vegetarian toasted wrap which has Swiss and Monterey Jack, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, artichoke hearts, roasted red peoppers, mushrooms, spinach, green peppers, dill dressing and sunflower seeds.  This sounds like a step above usual veggie options at other places!

There will be a few changes in January, which will highlight toasted foccacia.  A few more changes will be the addition of a lot of fresh fruit and they will feature desserts from a local vendor.

    Lad, Katelyn and Nate

Employees Nate and Katlyn did a great job preparing the food for us!  Be sure to check out The Columbus Sandwich Company which is located off of 256, south of I-70 next to Swan Cleaners.  My husband found it by knowing it was near Turnberry Golf Course.  Thanks to Lad for hosting us!

    A favorite for Central Ohioans

PeppermintIn business since 1870, Graeter’s Ice Cream has become a favorite for many Central Ohioans families. Most people have a favorite Graeter’s Signature or Traditional Flavor. However, the Tastecasting crew was in store for more than their favorite flavor when invited by Keith Slaone to visit the Powell location.

    Holiday Season

ice creamTo celebrate the holiday season, we had the opportunity to taste the seasonal favorites such as Cinnamon, Eggnog and Peppermint. These flavors taste exactly like the real deal and have real candy folded into the ice cream. Precisely what you would expect!

Elena’s Graeter Hope Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

If the seasonal ice cream flavors and the holiday gift card sale aren’t enough to spark a giving spirit within your heart, we also tasted Elena’s Graeter Hope Blueberry Pie Ice Cream. This delicious ice cream with real blueberries and pieces of flaky piecrust was created in honor of Elena Desserich. The Desserich family of Cincinnati founded Cure Starts Now to raise money for pediatric brain cancer after loosing their six-year-old daughter, Elena, to cancer in 2007. Graeter’s gives a percentage of the proceeds to this worthy cause.

    Signature Wines LLC

    Friday, November 20th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 2 Comments »

    Header-Our-wine-2

From time to time, TasteCasting gets an opportunity to experience something special. We had been invited to a wine and food pairing at Signature Wines LLC a woman owned and operated winery which has found a niche specializing in designing customized and personalized labels that can be placed on any of their six fine wines. During the visit to set up the tasting I learned the winery would be processing their 2009 vintage in the weeks just before the tasting. I was able to wrangle an invitation to attend the crush and press. As the weather in California’s wine country keep delaying the shipment of Cabernet grapes, the process took place just before the TasteCasting event. What an experience. I had no idea what was involved in making fine wine. It takes a lot of work and organization to bring grapes to the level of fine wine. The high light of the experience was at the press. After crushing, punching, and moving the must to the press, there is what is called “free run”. This is what comes out of the press before pressure is applied. I was able to be the first to sample this free run. All I have to say is 2009 will be a very good year for Signature Wines Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has 2 years to age in the tanks before bottling. After only ten days of careful attention by Kelly Harvey during the fermentation phase, this wine was awesome. It should be fantastic when bottled. Look for videos of this process on their web site. http://signaturewinesofohio.com

    The night of the TasteCasting

    Holiday Labels

    Holiday Labels

The night of the TasteCasting, as the TasteCasters arrived, we were treated to Signature Wines House Sangria which is make from their Rose’. Recipe is offered with each bottle of Rose’. After a little socializing and awing the personalized labels on bottles displayed in the office area, Kelly talked to the group about her winery.

    The Pairing

groupDuring the pairing, we learned the most important thing to remember when pairing food with wine is to always match similar flavors to make sure that the intensity of the wine contributes to the flavor of the dish. By matching the flavors one flavor doesn’t overpower the other. There is balance.

    2005 Chardonnay

Signature Wines 2005 Chardonnay was paired with a Robusto cheese. Robusto is a Dutch Gouda cheese that has been aged nine months. The Chardonnay is like no other. There is no heavy oak taste in this wine like others I have experienced. This was my favorite of the six offered. The Gouda’s salty and slightly sharp taste paired very nicely with the slightly sweet Chardonnay.

    2005 Zinfandel Blush

The 2005 Zinfandel Blush was paired with aged cheddar and smoked ham obtained from Thurn’s a family owned butcher’s market in Columbus. This Zinfandel is loaded with intense fruit aromas and is simi-sweet.

    2004 Rose’

Next up was the 2004 Rose’ paired with Buffalo chicken dip. I just remembered I need to ask for the dip recipe. The Rose’ is a complex, full-bodied dark rose’. This wine contributes a rich caramel, dark cherry and juicy blackberry flavor to any spicy foods.

    2005 Merlot

We were treated to a plate of rotini pasta with basil pesto to pair with the 2005 Merlot. This wine is perfectly matched with grilled tuna, roast pork, or herb roasted chicken. Dishes flavored with basil are often paired with Merlot.

    2006 Cabernet Sauvignon

Succulent sirloin steak with mushrooms in merlot sauce paired very well with another favorite of mine. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium-bodied dry red with a soft French oak nuance. This wine should be served with hearty pasta dishes and red meat such as rack of lamb or prime rib. The hearty dish of Sirloin steak was prepared for us by grilling the steak to medium rare and allowing to rest. Mushrooms were sautéed in butter and then treated to Signature Wine’s Merlot to make the savory sauce. The steak was then sliced and added to the mushroom and wine sauce.

    2001 Port

The dessert for our evening was the 2001 Port paired with fabulous dark chocolate truffles. The truffles were made by hand. The dark chocolate truffle was dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with dark chocolate and covered with cacao nibs. With this effort, Mary Beth has been promoted to Signature Wines artisan chocolatier. The Port is an elegant, delicious and seductively sweet, full-bodied dessert wine which is not for the faint of heart. The intoxicating effect of this wine is of many dimensions. For dessert try a glass of port and a good piece of chocolate.

We learned that all the wines are priced at this time less than $15 with a 10% discount on case purchases. There is no charge for the personalized label and no minimum order. Great for holiday gift giving.

We want to thank Kelly Harvey and Mary Beth for a very educational and deliciously enjoyable evening at Signature Wines.

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls

    Our Drive Into Hocking Hills

Our drive to The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls the night of the Tasting took us through the winding and rolling roads of Hocking Hills. The sights were amazing. Deer were grazing along the road in two locations. Away from the light and noise of the city tucked away on State Route 374 the Inn sits along the road as two log cabins with additions. It has been a work in progress sence the begining in 1985. The Inn keepers Terry and Ellen continued the work of Ellen’s mother who passed four years into the project. Terry was hired as a contractor and is how Ellen met him. They were married and work the Inn togeather. Terry has been busy building cabins to keep up with the demand. They have full housekeeping cabins as well as cottages to serve the budget and needs of their guest. Watch the video below to learn more about Ellen and the history of the Inn.

    Chef Anthony

Anthony Schultz was brought on as Executive Chef two years ago and brings a more modern aproach to the menu. Chef Anthony recieved his training in New York at the French Culinary School. I will let him tell you more about himself and his menu.

    The Menu

First, there are no words which would do justice to the menu that Chef Anthony has created. The one thousand words of a photo does not even come close. You really need to visit and experience for your self the magnificent flavors the menu offers. From seafood, pork, beef to pasta there is truly something of everyone.

The three courses start off with the Inn’s Wisconsin Cheese Ball and Olive Tapenade served with crackers and toasted breads. As Chef Anthony stated in the video, the Wisconsin Cheese Ball was a creation of Ellen’s mothers and has been served from day one. The Olive Tapenade was brought to the Inn from his work in the east.

    House Salad

    House Salad

The second course is a choice of Homemade Soup Prepared Daily from Scratch or House Salad with Homemade Vinaigrette.

    Atlantic Sole Picccata

    Atlantic Sole Picccata

There are ample portions of the six Entree selections. I had the Atlantic Sole Piccata which is a perfictly cooked filet of sole prepaired with oreganatta, red grapes, capers and a pan sauce. It was served with steamed green beans and a magnificent wild and brown rice side.

The Oven Roasted Filet Mignon was the reconmendation of Chef Anthony. My friend Mark agreed and said the filet was cooked just as he had requested. The Filet is parpaired with Caramelized Shallots in a Burgundy Sauce.

My wife, Rose, had the Roasted Loin of Pork which was prepaired with an Apple-Onion Chutney with a Balsamic Glaze. I can attest that this was a very moist falvorful cut of pork. She shared a small piece with me.

    Shellfish Pan-Roast

    Shellfish Pan-Roast

Brenda had the Shellfish Pan-Roast which was Seared Diver Scallops and Jumbo Shrimp served with Asparagus and Potato Gnocchi and Beurre Blanc sauce. I think Brenda liked her choice. She was a clean plater.

The Butternut Squash Ravioli with Fresh Sage, Toasted Pecans, Dried Cranberries. Asparagus and Asiago Cream Sauce would be a nice choice for the vegetarian.

They also serve a Herb Seared Chicken Breast which is served with a Slow Cooked White Bean Vegetable Ragout and Chablis Broth.

    The Dessert

I will just let the pictures tell the story except for the cobbler I had. It was a Mixed Berry Cobbler served with Vanilla Ice Cream. The berries tasted as if just picked off the bush. The most falvorful berries I have had in a long time. You could tell there was no jellys in this cobbler. Crunchy pastry and great tasting berries.

    The Taste of Champaign County

    Monday, November 9th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

Taste of Champaign County….a wonderful culinary trip ‘down the road a piece’.

    ucc

    The Urbana Conference Center

Driving through picturesque rolling countryside, out RT 36 to Urbana…..just 30 minutes outside the Columbus metro area, with a rural and small town character that has endured for generations. The Urbana Conference Center, an attractive, modern facility set just past the downtown area on RT 29, was the site of this year’s Taste of Champaign County, a showcase of local restaurants & businesses. The Conference Center is a multi-purpose facility with all the amenities for large and small events, equipped for meetings, weddings, and events of all kinds. The event benefitted The Caring Kitchen, an outreach organization which operates a soup kitchen, food pantry, emergency shelter, clothing & furniture distribution service and other services for those in need.

A wonderful mix of old and new

The warmth and charm of Champaign County filled the large Conference Center auditorium as I toured the displays and sampled the generous offerings of the participating restaurants. The event encouraged me to explore more of the counties which surround the Columbus metro area, and the unique and wonderful restaurants I learned about today. mumfordLet’s start with Mumford’s Potato Chips & Deli, an Urbana establishment in business since 1932, making their own brand of potato chips, and offering a full menu of deli favorites. I overheard patrons saying they had to take cases of Mumford’s chips to their out of town relatives, so coveted are these thick crunch kettle cooked crunchers. If you see these chips in your local store, try ‘em. They’ll hold up to any dip!

The art of great food….and food as a

roberts2Everyone was mesmerized by the chef from Robert’s on Miami who was crafting a confectionary church out of sugar and other completely edible materials. Robert’s has an entire village on display during the holidays & patrons may order customized creations. Robert’s also has an eclectic menu with items including Povimi Veal Liver Lyonnaise, Tuscan Chicken and Very Vegan Fettuccine. They also offered samples of melt-in-your-mouth filet mignon and an assortment of pastries which were as delicious as they were beautiful. Chetty’sChetty’s at Northwood Hills is a full service restaurant and caterer at the Northwood Hills Country Club in Springfield. The restaurant is open to the public for dining, and Chef Chetty caters all manner of events from business meetings to graduation parties. Chef Chetty offered his own Macaroni & Cheese made with penne pasta and a rich creamy cheese sauce, and two types of bruschetta, one with smoked salmon & boursin and another with a choice of cheese spread, hummus, pesto, or sun dried tomato toppings.

Bed & Breakfast….Relax & refresh in historic surroundings

highb&bChampaign County village streets are lined with historic Victorian style homes, perfect for Bed & Breakfast Inns. Two of these delightful destinations were introducing themselves to TOCC visitors. High Street Manor Bed and Breakfast in Urbana is located in an 1849 residence with a choice of 4 beautifully appointed rooms. A hearty home-cooked meal is served each morning in the formal Dining Room, and High Street Manor is just two blocks from dining & shopping in downtown Urbana. The Hopkins House graces the front of the 200 acre Darbyland Farms in Mechanicsburg. The 16-room home has a rich history and is available for single room rentals as well as larger events, such as weddings or reunions. Both B&Bs take pride in the quality of their service & food, and providing a memorable experience for their patrons.

Urbana offers a great variety of dining opportunities

Urbana has so many restaurants to satisfy all your food cravings. From casual to more upscale, and everything in between. It was fun to learn about establishments outside my usual ‘dine-out’ zone and expand my thinking about what’s available in greater central Ohio. Nonesuch Fare at the corner of RTs 36 & 29 in Urbana features a menu with items from soup and panini to burgers, fried chicken and a list of daily specials. I tried their Loaded Baked Potato Soup which is topped with crispy bacon & green onions for a wonderful mix of tastes and textures. Can you say comfort food? Nonesuch has partnered with other local establishments such as Caven’s Meats, Hemisphere Coffee Roasters and Mumford’s Potato Chips to strengthen the local economy & provide the freshest and best offerings to their patrons. Café Paradiso has an extensive menu of Italian favorites with entrees including Sicilian Meatloaf, Chicken Saltimbocca and Grande Portabella Mushroom Ravioli. Located on Monument Square in the heart of Urbana, they serve lunch and dinner daily.

    Mmmmmmm…..Coffee

depoOne thing I love about TasteCasting is the opportunity to meet restaurant owners and learn about their passion for what they create, and how they turned their dreams into a business, where they can share their love for food with the public. Mechanicburg’s Hemisphere Coffee Roasters was established in 2002 with the vision to make a difference in the coffee growing regions of the world. Tall order for a small company from Champaign County! They have developed direct relationships with the farmers in East Africa & Central America where they purchase their exceptional coffee, creating a system of fair trade at its best. HCR has an extensive list of coffees including blends and flavored coffees by the pound at their shop in Mechanicsburg, or for order online. And speaking of coffee, which is something I enjoy, a trip to Urbana always includes a stop at the Depot Coffeehouse, beside the old railroad tracks (now a bike trail) on RT 36 in, yes, a restored 1890’s train depot. Serving wonderful Crimson Cup Coffee, the Depot has a coffee lover’s dream menu with hot & cold coffee beverages, from espresso to frozen mocha latte, along with tea, smoothies and even an interesting frozen hot chocolate. They also sell gourmet goods make by Urbana’s own Robert Rothschild Farms.

Tasting events are a world of discovery

fudgeSpeaking of learning new things, I learned where St. Paris, Ohio is – straight out RT 36, west of Urbana. And, I also learned a delightful reason to go there. Braden’s Café & Sweets had an absolutely decadent spread of chocolate delights on display for lucky tasters. From Buckeyes to Turtles, they had the candy to satisfy your inner chocoholic. They make over a dozen flavors of real cream & butter fudge and I tried the chocolate. It was so smooth and creamy with a rich cocoa flavor. Fudge textures do vary and this was just silky smooth. The Café part of Braden’s has a menu with choices including broasted chicken and shrimp, sandwiches, salads and a large beverage menu. Just don’t forget to take home some fudge. If you want to save some time at Thanksgiving, serve lovingly homemade pies & baked goods, and support a great cause, order from the Urbana Christian Fellowship. They had their picture perfect, and equally delicious, apple pie for sampling, and are taking orders now for Thanksgiving. If you have a lot of relative coming for the holiday, like I do, you may need other foods to fill out the huge amount of vittals its takes to keep the ravenous minions satisfied. The FoodSmiths Catering has everything from carryout specials & boxed lunches to platters of all kinds to cater any kind of event. Never underestimate the value of some perfectly positioned appetizer trays to keep the ravenous relatives from raiding your pantry! And the tour continues with Verde Food, Espresso & Wine in Urbana. I sampled a delightful Syrah wine from their collection. Bill’s Enchanted Flowers & Gifts showed off their floral artistry at a table decorated with an eye pleasing array of dramatic tall vases and small delicate accents, to complete the look of any event.

    Eat like a local

So, Champaign County, you have charmed me with your hospitality and great food. The wonderful local establishments at the TOCC event have given me new reasons to explore Ohio beyond my home turf. Thank you for your hospitality and all the new reasons to take a trip out RT 36 and experience everything Champaign County has to offer.

Bon Vie Bistro – Good food. Good times. Good life.

    Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 7 Comments »

Good food. Good times. Good life.

    Bon Vie Bistro

    Bon Vie Bistro

Nestled right in front of the Central Park Fountain on the north side of Easton Town Center, it might be easy to overlook Bon Vie Bistro (@BonVieBistro). Its quaint location almost seems intentional, providing its guests with an atmosphere that is casually sophisticated, warm and inviting. And with a menu featuring French-influenced comfort foods and spirits that can be served in the charming dining room or on the sidewalk cafe-style patio, Bon Vie truly is a quintessential casual French bistro.

Mike Frame, General Manager, and Matt Schultz, E-marketing and Social Media coordinator, gave our group a brief history of Bon Vie and the Bravo Brio Restaurant Group (BBRG), which also owns Bravo Cucina Italiana and Brio Tuscan Grille and currently has over 70 restaurants in several states. Mike, and the Chefs at Bon Vie, gave us — a turnout of around 30 professionals eager to taste new foods while networking with each other at the same time — an opportunity to savor three new dishes, two “signature” dishes, and a large selection of their Bar Bites.

Mike Frame, General Manager of Bon Vie, chats with our group about Bon Vie’s history as well as introduces the dishes we will get to try.

    Shrimp Tempura Skewers

    Shrimp Tempura Skewers

We were more than ecstatic to be invited into Bon Vie’s “inner circle” to try out three new dishes that will be introduced to the menu on November 17. We started out with the new Shrimp Tempura Skewers that were beautifully presented in “tee-pee” style and garnished with a Ginger vinaigrette shitake mushroom slaw. That tasty dish was followed by Southwest Flatbread pizza with Chipotle, and the Wedge salad. The new menu items seem to indicate that Bon Vie might be looking to provide a more diverse menu than just French-inspired cuisine — but given the exceptional flavor and preparation of these dishes, it seems to work for them!

Our server, Trey, holding one of the Signature Dishes: Chicken Crepes

Our server, Trey, holding one of the Signature Dishes: Chicken Crepes

Bon Vie prides itself on its “Signature” dishes — and with good reason. Both signature dishes we tried — The Chicken Crepes, crepes made with chicken, cremini mushrooms, spinach, Gruyere cheese and a Mornay sauce, and the Chicken Cordon Bleu, crispy nut crusted chicken breast with ham, Swiss cheese, honey mustard, mayo and lettuce on toasted brioche — were exceptional. We were also able to try a more than generous medley of Bon Vie’s Bistro Bites — delightful mini dishes (but no so mini in portions) that can be ordered Monday – Friday, 3-7PM and 9PM-close for $2.95 each. Our guilty pleasures were more than satisfied with servings of Bon Vie Sliders, Portabello flatbread, seared ahi tuna, and not to mention their extremely popular Roquefort Frites — Bon Vie’s award-winning frites topped with Roquefort Bleu Cheese — which in, one taster’s words, were “perfectly salty and Nooo grease!” See what I mean about the guilty pleasure?

Our evening came to a bittersweet end with a surprise dessert treat of chocolate creme de pot. A chocolate mousse that was so rich, but light that it was hard not to ask, “One more, please?” (or steal your neighbors). Many thanks to Mike Frame, the Chefs, our new social media friend, Matt, as well as our servers Trey and AJ for welcoming us into the Bon Vie inner circle— the 2.5 hours we spent there only made us want to come back for more!

The Bon Vie event in a Whrrl — Enjoy!

    Taste of Bexley 2009 – 1st Annual!

    Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

Tastecasters was invited to join in for the first ever Taste of Bexley, and boy were we glad to be there.

26 Bexley restaurants were scheduled to attend, but unfortunately, not all of them showed. Too bad for them. There were lots of hungry visitors, and we enjoyed the heck out of everything we tried.

Taste of Bexley - Chihuly Glass at Franklin Conservatory

Taste of Bexley - Chihuly Glass at Franklin Conservatory

The venue was a delight and the display of Chihuly Glass only added to its charm. By the size of the crowd I would think this was a huge crowd pleaser and did a lot for Mid Ohio Food Bank.

Since there were so many restaurants, I’m going to try to break the reviews up by type – just for some semblance of order. I didn’t manage to get pictures of everything, which is a shame because it was all delightful!

    Casual Eateries

    Brueggers sesame seed bagel sandwich

    Brueggers sesame seed bagel sandwich

Entering, the first booth we came to was Bruegger’s Bagels. They offered herby turkey sandwiches, chicken salad, chicken spaetzel soup and roasted tomato soup. I tried the chicken salad and it was as good as my home-made, which – since I’m truly a chicken salad snob – is quite the compliment. I know where I’ll go next time I crave chicken salad, that’s for sure. I also tried the chicken spaetzel soup, which would be perfect with a bagel on a cold day.

Panera bakery was also there. If you like REAL bread (not the crap we Americans use for sandwiches on a regular basis – no, I mean the stuff that’s got crust and some heft to it!) you can’t go wrong at Panera. They provided samples of many of their breads and some spinach dip. Yum.

    Katzinger's sandwiches

    Katzinger's sandwiches

The next booth we stopped at was Katzinger’s Deli. Katzinger’s is located in German Village, but a proud supporter of all things Bexley. Anyone who’s ever eaten there knows there’s not a bad thing on the menu. I tried the smoked salmon and the veggie sandwich with roasted red peppers. There was also turkey and corned beef, but I wanted to leave some for other people to try. Yum.

At the Cosi stand I tried the Chicken pesto, and my husband tried the buffalo chicken sandwich. There were pepper chips on the side. They also had cream cheese on bagels, but we didn’t try them. When we picked up the sandwiches, I said, “Hey, we’ll each pick a different one and share!” But once we started, we couldn’t stop. We each ate our whole sandwich, and when we went back to try to get more, the line was so long. We thought we’d come back later, but everything was gone by the time we got there again. Sigh.

Old Bag of Nails - Fried Pickles

Old Bag of Nails - Fried Pickles

Old Bag of Nails was a treat. I’m originally from Detroit, and I’m kind of a fried fish snob – there’s some GREAT fish places in Detroit, let me tell you. The fish that Old Bag of Nails brought was right on par with what I’m used to eating. I can’t tell you how happy that made me. I know where I’ll go for my next fish and chips craving! There was also a pumpkin roll, with a super cream cheese filling.

    Rusty Bucket grills Quesodillas

    Rusty Bucket grills Quesodillas

We then made our way over to the Rusty Bucket. They didn’t bring their fried pickles – it would have been difficult to have them hot and fresh, I imagine, since there was no onsite cooking available there at Franklin Conservatory. And while that is the one thing I always order when I’m there, I have to say that the chicken & corn quesodillas are now also likely to become a staple for me. They were perfectly spiced and the guacamole matched it perfectly.

    Flavor's Eatery Chicken & Dips

    Flavor's Eatery Chicken & Dips

Flavor’s Eatery is a restaurant I had never heard about before, but definitely want to go back to. On display were some lightly breaded chicken bites that served as a vehicle for some amazing home-made dipping sauces. The Thai sauce was a favorite. Just a hint of spice, sweet, and peanut, and it really delivered. Also nicely done was the barbecue sauce, that was a slight bit runny but had a great tang to it. The white chicken chili was a wonderful soup though. The consistency was more like soup – I typically view chili as a bit thicker – but the broth was wonderfully seasoned and had big chunks of vegetables in it.

At Aladdin’s Eatery, we sampled some Mediterranean fare. As always, it was delicious. Aladdin’s really knows how to create a vegetarian meal that makes you not miss the meat at all. I tried a lentil & rice dish called Mujadara – absolutely delicious – where just the lentils & rice themselves would have been flavorful enough, but they topped it with fresh vegetables (a Lebanese salad) that just brought the whole thing to life. I also recommend, when you eat there, to try their hummus and anything they serve with feta.

    Bexley Natural Market

    Bexley Natural Market

Up near the very front, we found Bexley Natural market. Organic vegetables. Carrots, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese. It was all fabulous. And best of all, hormone free. I seriously have to start shopping there.

    Dessert Fare

    Jeni's Ice Cream

    Jeni's Ice Cream

Right next to the Rusty Bucket was Jeni’s ice cream. Okay, could there be any more of my Columbus favorites under one roof? Jeni’s ice cream is a unique treat. Their salty caramel is something you won’t taste anywhere else. The dark chocolate is actually dark – a must for those who prefer a higher cacao content (although, I find their cocoa-zin – which they didn’t bring to the event to be even darker). The heirloom pumpkin 5-spice was like pumpkin pie in a cup. I didn’t get to try their apple cider sorbet, to my chagrin. But luckily, they brought samples of the Seattle-based natural soda they sell at their stores. It was a lavender soda, and it was delightful. The lavender wasn’t overpowering, there was a lemony undertone. It cleansed the palette beautifully.

Johnson’s Ice Cream, which was on the other end of the Taste, is a more traditional, and just as delicious, ice cream provider. They offered their own pumpkin spice ice cream and the spices in it were perfectly blended – even as full as I was by the time I got there, I couldn’t stop eating it.The French Butter Fudge was also amazing. Rich, creamy, buttery ice cream with a thick river of fudge running through it. It was a sundae in and of itself – the only thing missing was whipped cream and nuts, and I didn’t really miss it.

    Cherbourg Bakery Brownies

    Cherbourg Bakery Brownies

Oh, then there was the Cherbourg Bakery. Everything they brought was gluten free. Now *THAT* is a feat. For those who aren’t bakers, gluten is found in flour made from wheat. You know, the white flour that is used in almost EVERY SINGLE baked good most Americans think of as populating a bakery. But you’d never know they were gluten-free from the taste. YUM. The lemon cookies were delicious. And there was a cookie made with rice flour. I love everything Japanese, so I was kind of expecting it to be mochi-like. Nope. Tasted like a sugar cookie to me. Very good.

    Beverages

At Starbucks, I tried the Pumpkin Spice Latte. This is a seasonal drink – you can only get it in the fall, and I, for one, look forward to it all year. The spices are perfectly blended and it’s not overly sweet, which I really like. They also had samples of their new instant, Via, which they handed out for people to try at home. Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m really curious, I’ll have to admit. And giving away samples at this event was pretty smart.

    Mona Vie

    Mona Vie

Mona Vie was a surprise for me. This is a bottled health drink that uses a blend of fruits to create a premium health kick. And it tastes delicious! Plus, they offer an “energy drink” version – it comes in a can that is somewhat Red Bull-esque, but instead of giving you a bad lift that leads to a bad crash, this stuff energizes you naturally. And the carbonation just adds a little something to the flavor. I could so see me drinking this regularly.

    Fine Dining

Bexley Monk - Duck confit, and macaroons

Bexley Monk - Duck confit, and macaroons

One of the most highly regarded restaurants in Bexley, The Bexley Monk, brought a duck confit with truffle oil. Not too delicate, not too hearty – just right. And their macaroons with blood orange buttercream – heavenly. I’ve never eaten at the Monk before, but it was obvious that they’re at least 4 stars.

We looked everywhere for Giuseppe’s Ritrovo. They were nowhere to be found. I asked around and found out that they hadn’t been able to attend. I was seriously bummed. I’ve had this restaurant recommended to me repeatedly and was really looking forward to it. Giuseppe’s Ritrovo, if you’re listening, be sure to come next year, okay?

    Caryn's Cuisine's brownies

    Caryn's Cuisine's brownies

Caryn’s Cuisine provided a truly complete offering. A large, fully stuffed mushroom that had a nice bit of spice to it started things off. The star of the show was a merlot-braised tenderloin that was amazing. Served on a bit of crostini with an amazing herbed horseradish sauce, this bite was a little bit of heaven. Caryn’s finished with a pair of desert offerings. First up was a cheesecake bite with a little strawberry on top. The cheesecake was wonderfully creamy and the graham cracker crust was spot on. Topping that though was a peanut butter and chocolate ganache brownie. It was exactly what you hope for when you hear the phrase “peanut butter and chocolate ganache brownie.”

The fare at The Top was the tops. It won best of show – both Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice. It’s no wonder they were one of the first providers to run out of food. In fact, by the time I made it back to the top, they had run out of their potatoes. However, the jumbo shrimp and pan-seared filet more than made up for it. Just one shrimp could easily feed a family of four. They don’t mess around when they say jumbo. The taste was clean and fresh, with a satisfying cocktail sauce. And the filet was amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had a more tender piece of filet. You could have almost spread it with a knife, which you absolutely would not need to cut it.

    Parkhurst Caramel Apple Pie

    Parkhurst Caramel Apple Pie

Capital University’s Parkhurst Dining was a surprise. From the name, you can’t help but think cafeteria food – but that mental picture couldn’t be farther from the truth. They offered little spoonfuls of salad that were perfect – feta cheese mixed with the vegetables and spices wonderfully. The Sirloin Beef wrapped around enoki mushrooms with a creamy sauce was a treat. And their desserts! Oh, man the desserts. The buckeye peanut butter parfait and the fudge brownie were great and the carmel apple pie parfait was even better. This isn’t campus eating – this is fine cuisine.

Catering By Scott - Salmon Mousse Tartlet with Creamy Pesto

Catering By Scott - Salmon Mousse Tartlet with Creamy Pesto

Catering by Scott was also amazing. I was expecting them to be part of the Casual Dining category, but with what they brought, I have to put them under Fine Dining. Chefs proudly offered a delightfully tasty salmon mousse tartlet with creamy pesto. The light mousse was served on toast points with the pesto to the side. It was a great appetizer selection with a mouthwatering mixture of savory flavors. They also offered a unique buffalo chicken tartlet with spicy aili: the flavor of buffalo wings taken to a new level with elegant presentation and a mix of tastes (buffalo & aioli). Both items would be very popular at a party.

    Entertainment

    Pizza acrobat

    Pizza acrobat

Along the way, we tried to take the time to enjoy the provided entertainment. There was a jazz trio, a guitarist and singer… actually, I think I might have missed a lot of it. But we made sure to see the Pizza Acrobat. My only complaint was that there were so many people watching, and he wasn’t on a high enough platform for us all to see everything over their heads. It was so FREAKIN’ COOL! My husband caught one of the crusts that he threw into the audience like a frisbee. We carried it around like a trophy the rest of the night.

One of our Tastecasters made a video of the night. Take a look and you’ll see the acrobat in action!

    Pizza

And speaking of pizza, there were three pizza providers there.

    Bexley Pizza Plus

    Bexley Pizza Plus

Bexley Pizza Plus’ pizza brought many of their specialty pizzas. I don’t know if you’ve read my review of them that I posted earlier this year, but their crust is amazing. It’s perfect for households that are split between liking thin crust and a thicker crust – it combines the best of both worlds. I highly recommend their Ultimate pizza.

Anthony’s was also there – another of my favorite pizza joints. Anthony’s has a wonderfully crispy thin crust, and they use some of the tastiest mozzarella I’ve ever had on a pizza. If you visit their restaurant, they also serve stromboli – and I recommend their vegetarian stromboli, I think it’s called meatless magic. MMm. Just writing about it is making me hungry.

Rubino’s, which is right next to Bexley Pizza Plus in Bexley, decided to shake things up by not bringing their pizza. Instead, they offered up samples of their spaghetti for everyone, so that people could get to know them for more than just pizza. They also served salads, which was a nice touch.

    Asian Cuisine

Moshi Sushi - Spicy Tuna Roll

Moshi Sushi - Spicy Tuna Roll

Moshi Sushi was a delight. There was a very unique, somewhat crunchy spicy tuna roll. So delicious and unlike any other tuna roll I’ve ever tried. Oh, and words cannot encompass the bliss of their ginseng braised short ribs. HEAVEN! Nice and sweet with a little spicy flavor. And I don’t think the meat could have been any more tender.

    Peking Dynasty - Lo Mein

    Peking Dynasty - Lo Mein

Peking Dynasty is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. They didn’t bring it with them, but I highly recommend their hot and sour soup – some of the best I’ve ever had. Everything I’ve ever had there has been phenomenal. (Hint: General Tso’s chicken is some of the BEST EVER.) What they did bring was a yummy chicken lo mein, and their flavorful eggrolls. They also have a sushi chef on staff and brought some of that to the Taste. Some of what they brought: the tiger roll, spicy tuna roll, and an eel roll. All were great. The tiger roll was good “beginner’s sushi,” and the eel was also great. Both had great sauces that let the natural flavors come through as well.

Wings salmon cakes with corn & edamame

Wings salmon cakes with corn & edamame

Finally, there was also Wing’s Restaurant, who served salmon cakes with mayo on a corn & edamame salad. The salmon cakes were an unexpected delight, and the corn and edamame had a light citrus-y thing going on. I couldn’t stop eating it. They also served us ruby (and port) glazed corned beef over stir-fried cabbage, with mustard. I’ve never even seen corned beef at a Chinese restaurant, but this was delicious. And my husband, who won’t ever willingly eat cabbage tried it (grudgingly) and said, “That’s good! It doesn’t even taste like cabbage!” It was flavorful, but not overpowering.

All in all, we had a great time. I like trying new restaurants, but usually am stuck with the conundrum of what to try. Usually, you pick one item and hope you made the right choice. Sometimes it’s just what you wanted, and sometimes you leave thinking, “Man, I wish I would have tried that OTHER dish.” That’s the great thing about the Taste. Where else can you sample so many different foods and leave pleasantly, but not overly, full. It was perfect.

The Top Steakhouse — The Best Steakhouse in Columbus!

    Patio at The Top

If you haven’t been to The Top Steakhouse you are missing out on one of Columbus, Ohio’s finest steakhouses. Started in 1955, The Top is a historical landmark complete with mob stories and a steadfast commitment to traditional steakhouse fair. Although The Top dates back to fifties the current owners, Jean and Denver, purchased the restaurant about three years ago. This husband and wife are not new to the restaurant industry; both have worked for many restaurants throughout the years. At The Top, Jean manages the front while Denver manages the kitchen as the Head Chef.

The Top010Our amazing visit started with appetizers: shrimp cocktail and escargot. All the seafood at The Top is flown in from Hawaii and it arrives 24 hours after it’s harvested. The quality was apparent in the shrimp we were served; they were HUGE! They were served with a fabulous cocktail sauce, which had the perfect amount of tangyness mixed with a subtle horseradish kick.

I was really excited to see escargot on the menu. I LOVE escargot and it’s a rare find in Ohio. The snails were perfectly cooked. Often snails are chewy, but these were tender and delicious. They were served in a fabulous herb and butter sauce The Top tastecasting 004with Parmesan cheese perfectly baked on the top, providing the right amount of salt to balance the dish. The plate also included toast points which were lightly rubbed with garlic. They were perfect to dip into the extra butter sauce the escargot was resting in.

Up next were the salads: a blue cheese bacon wedge and a Caesar salad. Both were delightful! The wedge salad was well dress and the lettuce was crunchy and nicely chilled. The Caesar salad was lightly tossed in a oil based dressing so the romaine wasn’t over saturated with a heavy, cream dressing.

For the main course we sampled the baby back ribs and the NY Strip. Both were AMAZING! The ribs were super tender, and slightly sweet with the perfect hint of spice. They were served with a potato and caramelized onion hash cooked in a red wine demi-glace, which was equally amazing.

    The Top tastecasting 015

The NY Strip steak was perfectly cooked with a beautiful crust on top and a nice pink center. It was topped with onion rings. The strip was excellent and the onion rings were nice and crunchy. The rings also adhered nicely to their breading. It was served with creamy mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked asparagus. This strip is the best steak I’ve had in Columbus and I’ve had a lot of steak in this town.

The Top tastecasting 017The desserts were also excellent! The creme brulee was creamy and had a perfect, crunchy sugar crust on top. It was topped with blueberries, which added a nice tangy flavor. The other dessert, the mascarpone pochette, is a lovely pastry was served with fruit and homemade caramel sauce providing a lovely balance of textures and flavors.

I really enjoyed my visit to The Top. The old world ambiance and the amazing food make this establishment a unique place to visit. I will DEFINITELY be back soon! Be sure to visit their website for more information: http://www.thetopsteakhouse.com/

Many thanks to Jean and Denver for hosting a great TasteCasting.

    Dublin Village Tavern

    Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

100_0833 Walking up to the Dublin Village Tavern you could immediately sense the Irish influences. Located in historic Dublin and housed in a building built in 1889, the Dublin Village Tavern is a good, casual dining experience in a historical building. When Tim Picciano opened the Tavern in 2000 it was known as a bar that served good alcohol. Today it is know as a restaurant that serves great food!

Owner, Tim Picciano announcing the evening's four course meal

Click on Photo to see video of Tim

And great food it is! The Columbus TasteCasters were in for a royal treatment lead by Tim himself.

The evening began with a few appetizers. The spinach artichoke dip was good, but what set it apart from all the others was the homemade flour chips that were light flakey and warm right from the oven. The Irish Egg Rolls, made daily, are stuffed with corned beef, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut then are hand rolled and deep fried.  Served with 1000 Island dressing on the side these are called the “Amazing Irish Egg Roll” for a reason. Definitely one of the TasteCasters favorites!

    100_0837

The appetizer course ended with a sampling of the Village Chowder. The potato, ham & cheese chowder with fresh jalapenos is a recipe from the owner and wonderfully delicious. Perfect for the cool fall and winter months ahead!

Next we were presented with two separate courses of entrees. The first entree course included some of the Tavern’s favorites, like the Irish Casserole, the Meat Loaf Dinner and of course, Irish staple Bangers & Mashed. They all are warm, comfort foods and the portions are large so plan on bringing an appetite, a friend, or a doggy bag home! For the second entree course we sampled burgers, sandwiches and onion rings. The burgers are good but it’s the Guinness BBQ sauce that takes it to the next level! One of the TasteCasters favorites was the Grilled Bologna sandwich. In fact, it’s a local favorites recently being named one of the “Top 10″ sandwiches in the area! If you want something different than a burger, the Turkey Club Wrap, which  is just one of seven wrap sandwiches, is tasty and if you add a side of the Tavern’s homemade, unbelievably delicious onion rings you have yourself one satisfying lunch. But the monster sandwich of them all was the Lumberjack Stack. Made with TWO 8 oz patties, ham, bacon, American & pepperjack cheeses, a broken yolk fried egg, banana peppers, lettuce, tomato & onion, this sandwich should have a contest created for it.

    IMG00179

    Just see for yourself.

Click on photo to see video of how the Irish Egg Roll came to be

Click on photo to see video of how the Irish Egg Roll came to be

The night ended with dessert. Yes, we were full but there’s always room for dessert, right?! So glad we made room because the Bread & Butter Pudding, Irish Car Bomb Brownie and Carrot Cake were sinfully delightful. Everyone had their favorites but the warm Carrot Cake seemed to be the crowd pleaser. However, the Whisky Sauce on the Bread & Butter Pudding and the warm caramel sauce with a hint of Guinness & Jamesons on the Irish Car Bomb Brownie were to die for! Seriously you could drink the sauces by themselves.

Before leaving with satisfied stomachs, Tim announced a TasteCasting Special. But you have to act fast.

Dublin Village Tavern is offering a 20% Discount your food bill until Thursday night, October 8, 2009 to anyone mentioning TasteCasting.

    The Taste of Grandview

    Monday, October 5th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus, Uncategorized | 3 Comments »

taste of grandviewThe Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce held quite a party at the McKinley Field Park in Grandview Sunday.  This was the 4th annual Taste of Grandview.  Having attended several similar events around the Columbus metro area, I have to say The Taste of Grandview was unlike any other.  There were 16 food vendors, some of which were offering their fare for just a donation, Free Segway rides by David Weller of SegAway Tours of Columbus, Free massages by Grandview heights Physical Therapy, Marching Band performance by Grandview Marching Band, a very large inflatable castle for the kids to jump around in, and entertainment on stage through out the afternoon and into the evening.  Bello Giardino, LLC was even there promoting their landscaping business.  There was truly something for everyone.

IMG_2176As TasteCasting was invited by Michelle Wilson of the Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce to promote the event, we focused on the food to start with.  I mentioned there were 16 food vendors. The list included Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, Champps, BW3, Gordon’s Gourmet, W.G. Grinders, Trattoria Roma, Hoggy’s, Smokeshack BBQ, Marshall’s, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Cap City Fine Diner and Bar, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Columbus Fish Market, Old Bag of Nails, Noodles & Co. and Third & Hollywood.  All the food I was able to taste was very good.

Watch the photo video of the event to get a little sense of how entertaining this event was.  And watch for the Taste of Grandview next year. You don’t want to miss it.

Many thanks to Michelle Wilson and the folks at the Grandview Area Chamber for inviting TasteCasting to their Taste of Grandview.  We all had a wonderful time.

    Donatos Hand Tossed Goodness

    Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Columbus, Uncategorized | 7 Comments »

    The TasteCasting and Donatos’ Teams

    TasteCasting and Donatos Team

    Good Food and Good Times

The TasteCasting team was hosted by the Donatos Pizza team at Easton Towne Center. The entire Donatos team made us feel right at home, answered our questions and served up great food and a good time. The tasting tonight took place at 4055 Morse Crossing in Columbus, Ohio. If you’re trying to find a Donatos in your area, you can visit the Donatos website, click on “Find A Store” and your only minutes away from great food.  If you’re not into getting out, try the online ordering. I’m guilty of using this after a long week at work. It’s great to click, checkout and in no time at all have your order delivered. I think the driver knows my family personally by now.

    What A Thrill

The reason I titled this section “What A Thrill”, is because I grew up eating Donatos thin crust pizzas in the early 70’s, and I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s been a family tradition in our house for decades to have pizza on the weekends and on those busy nights when you just don’t feel like cooking at home.  I was honored to have the TasteCasting team invited out to try the new hand tossed selections and other menus. We also found out that you can become a fan on Facebook and learn first about special offers.

    Waiting To Be Dazzled

As a huge fan of this home town favorite I and the other TasteCasting team members were waiting to be dazzled. Before we started the tasting, Tom Santor of Donatos described the 3 year process they worked through to make the hand tossed menu exceptional. Tom also explained that customers now have more choices and with the hand tossed option, now everyone in the family can have and enjoy their favorite crust and topping.

One of our newest TasteCasting team members Vanessa Druckman had the opportunity to join a few of us back in the kitchen and she had the good fortune to pick out her own toppings while the hand tossed pizza was made in front of her eyes. You can see it all here. We called this pizza “The Vanessa”.

The entire team had the opportunity to enjoy 6 different hand tossed pizzas. The pizza shot to the left was taken by team member Joe Harris also known as @jlh_photo on twittter. The menu for tonight included Hand Tossed Pepperoni, Serious Cheese™, Tossed Veggie™Tossed Works™, Tossed Chicken, Spinach, Mozzarella, and the Tossed Fresh Mozarella Trio Pizza.

    IMG_6150IMG_6146IMG_6149IMG_6148

The Tossed Pepperoni included a  zesty pepperoni that was just perfect with the cheese and soft handtossed crust. I did do a comparison test between the thin crust and the hand tossed. They were both exceptional.

Give Spinach A Try – You Might Like It

I’m not a big fan of spinach, but as a TasteCasting member sometimes you have to overcome your dislikes and give new things a try. Spinach by itself…still not a fan…..On a Donatos Hand Tossed Chicken Spinach Mozzarella pizza I can enjoy it. The chicken was all white meat. There was roasted garlic, roma tomatos and, yes, fresh spinach. All of that was brushed lightly with olive oil before entering the ovens.  It was good. So if you’re like me and really dislike spinach, don’t let that hold you back from trying this pizza. It was by far my favorite of the night. My wife will be thrilled that I ate my vegetables.

I followed up the pie cut pizza slices with a slice of dessert pizza. It was called the Cinnamon Timpano. This dessert had a wonderful crust, cinnamon sugar and white icing. It was the perfect way to finish off the evening.

Call, Click or Stop By and Give Donatos Hand Tossed A Try

I left the event smiling, had a terrfic time with the entire team, met a few new people and enjoyed every single bite of pizza. Stay in touch with Donatos on Facebook, Click, call or stop in to your local Donatos Pizza and give the Hand Tossed Pizza a try. If you’re not a Hand Tossed lover it’s okay. The thin crust we all love is still available.

    The Urban Spirit Cafe

    Thursday, September 17th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus, Uncategorized | 4 Comments »

    IMG_2004

After exiting the freeway at Broad St, we drove east and took a left through Old Town on Monroe Ave. and then a right on Long St.  At Long St. and 17 Ave. we found The Urban Spirit Café.  We had been  invited to attend a TasteCasting by Charity Martin-Via, Owner.  Located at 893 E. Long St. Columbus, Ohio, it is close to all downtown.  The Urban Spirit Café is Just blocks from the state house.

    The Red Awning

IMG_2044From the front, you notice the red awning over the entrance door.  Upon entering your eyes are drawn to the art on the walls.  You can tell this is not an ordinary coffee shop.  There are people working on laptops and sipping their drinks.  The round café tables are painted to look like old records.  This space has a history.  In May 1920 the building was erected to house the first African-American owned hospital in Columbus.  Named Alpha Hospital, it was built by William Arthur Method an Ohio Medical University graduate of 1906 and a Dentist; Dr. R. M. Tribett.  Dr. Method was known as the “Dean of Negro Physicians”, training several students in the practice of medicine.  As you stand in this space, you can sense the community pride that was present then and is carried on now.  You can tell a  revitalization is going on through the art on the walls, the great coffee drinks and the good conversation among the patrons.

The Band’s all here….Sinatra, The Sammy, Muddy Waters, The Duke, Lady Ella

    Muddy Waters

    Muddy Waters

The first drink tasted was the “Muddy Waters”, a combination of Fudge, Caramel and Espresso topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

    Method Mocha

    Method Mocha

Then the “Method Mocha” was served which was chocolate and espresso again served with whipped cream on top.

    The Duke

    The Duke

The final Espresso drink to try was the “The Duke” Cappuccino.  This was Caramel and Espresso combined with whipped cream and caramel syrup drizzled on top.  All mighty tasty!!

Other Signature drinks at the Urban Spirit Cafe

The menu offers  “Loscocco Latte”- Vanilla, White Chocolate and Espresso-“Lady Ella”-White Chocolate, Amaretto, and Espresso-“The Sammy” Fudge, Cherry, and Espresso-“Sinatra” White Chocolate and Espresso.  Also on the menu is Urban Ice which is Phosphates, Sweet Tea and my personal favorite Iced Chai.

The Urban Spirit Café can be found on the web at http://Urban-Spirit.com

The TasteCasting team want to thank Charity Martin-Via, Owner and Barista Kylin for a wonderful experience of Coffee and Art.

    Taste The Future

    Thursday, September 17th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

What a glorious night for the 21rst annual Taste the Future!  This annual culinary event funds scholarships and special programs in an effort to help students build their futures with a college education. Tastecasters had the privilege of attending Taste the Future to taste, tweet and repeat the event. With music in the air and eager to taste, the team of Dan Harris, Robb Landon, Betty Blankenship, Lisa Foster, Sara Barton, Cheryl Harrison, Ryan Bauer, Sandy Jenney and Tiffany Eckhardt set out with their assignments. Although all the food looked fantastic, we separated to cover all sections because who could honestly eat from all fifty restaurants?

To answer that question…Cheryl Harrison. Challenged to sample from all restaurants with Tiffany Eckhardt as her witness, Cheryl has the proof it can be done if your determined to do it!

Now that was fun! As Cheryl was on her mission, the rest of the team had the opportunity to really talk to and sample the restaurants. Here is what they had to say:
Betty Blankenship:  I discovered bison can be tasty, thanks toTrattoria 3924529337_527c13de26Roma. I learned of a place I didn’t know about but I intend to visit – La Plaia Ristorante because their cous cous and chicken marsala were so delicious. Cameron Mitchell Cateringshowed me a wonton can make a very nice taco. Posh Nosh showed me that a ceviche and cincy style chili look really nifty as shooters. Barrio’s make awesome tapas, which I already knew. The crab stuffed scallops at Elevator are wonderful. Worthington Hills Country Clubhad a sweet potato polenta that was the best polenta I’ve ever tasted.

latteRyan Bauer: While the majority of Taste of the Future was featured outdoors a small section was housed inside.  The first section was Stauf’s C
offee House which treated us to a raspberry mocha latte made with organic espresso beans, organic raspberry syrup and organic steamed milk. The concoction was made fresh to order and had a sweet yet crisp finish. The second station was Berwick Manor Party House which served a roasted vegetable and goat cheese ravioli with a tomato cream sauce and an Italian Briscoe. Next up was the Refectory with a French country terrine with chicken liver veal bacon pistachios and a schezwan peppercorn vinaigrette. The terrine was absolutely stunning, and you could literally taste all of the various components in the terrine. After the terrine I stopped by the Suisse Shopbakery to try their signature vanilla almond flavored torte. Elegant and rich, this densely textured almond cake is complimented by a filling of seedless red raspberry jam and French butter cream. The owner of Suisse Shop informed me that all of the marmalades that are used in the bakery are imported from Switzerland. Next, I tried two duck centric plates, the first, a duck confit by the Brookside Golf and Country Clubwhich was served with an Asian slaw. Second, the Burgundy Roomserved a pulled confit of duck leg with cheese tortellini & creamy jus. Both were expertly prepared and excellent. Finally I finished the tour of the inside section with a dark chocolate treat from Sweets by Yvette. A splendid ending with a homemade chocolate treat!
Sandy Jenney: I was the lucky one who got to do my tastings in the “green” 54e2c4e2-e7db-4c08-b5a5-aaefef526a93section of Taste The Future. I had nine fantastic eats to try: Limited Brands,Sage Am Bistro, Aramark GCCC, Barcelona Columbus, Fish Market, Forum at Knightsbridge, Our Cupcakery, Made from Scratch, Hilton Easton. Oh, to be able to cook like this myself. Thank goodness CSCC has the great culinary program, so we can Taste the Future!
limited-corn-puddingSara Barton:  Fresh taste is a priority at Bel Lago Waterfront Bistro - nearly all of the ingredients in their Heirloom Tomato caprese salad were grown in their kitchen garden and picked that afternoon by their chef and made a simple, crisp salad that was full of flavor. Meanwhile, Bistro 2110 at the Blackwell Hotel’s curried lamb rib with peach-ginger chutney combined sweet, savory, and spicy into one blissful bite. G. Michael’s Bistro and Bar low country shrimp and grits with andouille sausage may be my new comfort food – rich flavors and dazzling textures are always a winner. Catering by Design had a decadent wild mushroom sautee and puff pastry that was topped with creme fraiche and drizzled with truffle oil, which is not to be missed. Courtyard at Will Brook was a surprise – this assisted living facility also has a restaurant that is open to the public, which is where you can find their pesto roasted vegetable brushetta with balsamic reduction and topped with smoked mozzerella. LA Catering had a lively and lovely grilled teriyaki chicken that was accompanied by a grilled vegetarian platter with fresh zucchini and yellow squash marinated in olive herbs, with roasted peppers. To top off the evening, the Plaza Restaurant and Wine Bar at the Hyatt on Capitol Square delivered what is my new favorite dessert – Chocolate Pot du Creme Tart with Caramel and Espresso – which is rich, gooey, and a real treat for the senses
Tiffany Eckhardt:  My assignment was to follow Cheryl around on her 30319394mission to sample all restaurants. However, I have to admit that I had fair share of tasting. My favorites from the “yellow section”: Friendship Village of Columbus offered a gourmet selection. I loved their grilled spicy pineapple skewers! Reminded me of a trip to Costa Rica! All Around Columbus Catering served a wonderful Caribbean Curry Chicken. Starting to detect a theme. Who wouldn’t love the Scallops at Bravo! The Italian Kitchen? Honestly, I took two Shrimp Skewers from The Brewers Yard Bristo at Krogers. No wasting here! I had no idea that Krogers had something so wonderful! For Desert, Giant Eagle offered a variety of treats, Jeni’s (who doesn’t love their ice cream?) and Nank Bakery and More bakes a mouth watering Baklava! At the end of the evening all agreed, Taste The Future is a favorite! If we left you hungry for more details please visit our individual blogs for delicious pictures and tempting descriptions of the evening. Taste The Future is definitely a first-rate cause and an incredible exhibit of the first-class restaurants Columbus has to offer.

city bbqLisa Foster: Taste the Future had more than just opportunities to eat amazing food. There was also a lot to learn from the chefs at each establishment. The Cookie Cop , offered a selection of gourmet cookies, made with omega-3 oils and without eggs or butter. In addition to being moist and delicious, the cookies were crafted for nutritional value and are sold to schools and other institutions, and are available for purchase at the Raisin Rack. Another unique culinary niche is filled by Cherbourg Bakery , which specializes in gluten-free baked goods, which are also available at the Raisin Rack or by ordering from their website. City Barbeque , a perennial favorite, was in fine form with a wonderfully tender offering of Bama Chicken complimented by their popular corn pudding. Adding to the comfort food delights was Bob Evans Restaurants , which had mini pot pies filled with smoked cheddar turkey, leeks & bacon; smoked pork with cider apple slaw on a sweet potato biscuit and decadently sweet, bite size 7-layer cookies. Costco showcased their beautiful, great tasting cakes which can feed large parties at very reasonable prices. The Clarmont’s crab & shrimp cake was all rich seafood goodness complimented by a wonderful sauce and offered with a selection of dessert cookies. Chef Jack Edwards on top of his game with his Fire & Ice Salsa, which mixed spicy salsa flavors with cool, refreshing watermelon for a one of a kind taste sensationto sample all restaurants.

City Barbecue – You Can’t Beat the Meat

    Sunday, September 13th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 3 Comments »

Don’t shoot the messenger…that’s their slogan!

City Barbecue, obviously, is all about meat – ribs, brisket, chicken, turkey, sausage, and pulled pork. The restaurant is actually the brainchild of a competitive barbecue team that compiled their closely guarded recipes and techniques to form a business in 1999. That business is now thriving and can be found in 14 locations, including the new home of the Columbus Clippers, Huntington Park Stadium.

The Tastecasters visited the brand spankin’ new location in Westerville – one thing you’ll notice about City Barbecue is the consistency of the decor, service, and food, regardless of how new a location is. The Westerville location is airy and rustic, reminiscent of a traditional southern barbecue.

You Want Barbecue? You Can Find That Here.
City Barbecue is incredibly generous with their portions – in fact, it’s a safe bet that are not likely to leave hungry. We started with the ribs ($17.99 for a full slab, $10.99 for a half slab), a City Barbecue staple. The ribs were meaty and topped with the perfect amount of sauce. We did notice that the meat tends to be pink, which can cause alarm, given reports of the dangers of undercooking meat. However, rest assured that the meat is supposed to be pink – it’s actually a smoke ring, which is an indication of true slow-smoked barbecue, which also gives City Barbecue’s meat its unique flavors.

    Ribs

Of course, no visit to City Barbecue is complete without its signature beef brisket ($5.99), which has been voted the best brisket in Columbus by countless publications. This is how brisket should be cooked – tender and juicy, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

    Brisket LF

Beef Brisket, courtesy of Lisa Foster

For the traditionalist, you have to try the North Carolina pulled pork ($5.99). This is true southern barbecue – pulled pork topped with vinegar and slaw. Once you try this, you won’t be able to eat pulled pork any other way.

    Pork

Not Done Yet? How About a Side or Two?

Clockwise from top: green beans and bacon, corn pudding, baked beans with brisket, mac & cheese

Clockwise from top: green beans and bacon, corn pudding, baked beans with brisket, mac & cheese

City Barbecue is also famous for their side dishes ($1.89 each), particularly the corn pudding, which has been described as buttery, though a better description is that it’s like a creamy version of corn bread.

City Barbecue’s mac and cheese is supreme comfort food – gooey, cheesy, and creamy – a rich combination of flavors that envelop you.

Green beans and bacon are quickly becoming a staple – the beans are expertly seasoned and cooked with bacon.

Finally, we were treated to the baked beans with brisket. These beans are rich with a hint of bourbon flavor.

    Something for Everyone
City Barbecue works hard to maintain an affordable dining experience for everyone, especially families, which is why they offer the Family Pack ($19.95), which includes Pulled Pork sandwiches, two homemade sides and warm corn bread for two adults and two children.

Also, the next time you stop by City Barbecue, be sure to ask about Buck-a-Bone Tuesdays. It’s a great way to try their ribs and to save a few bucks in the process.

    Catering
City Barbecue caters events such as weddings, parties, and corporate events, plus there are two banquet rooms available at the Reynoldsburg facility (maximum capacity is 45 people). Should you need “tech” stuff, the following items are available free of charge:
    32’ TV/VCR/DVD
    Overhead Projection Unit
    Full Size Screen
    White Board with Flip Chart

Special thanks to Molly and the Westerville City Barbecue team for making us feel welcome…and stuffed!

    M Restaurant

    Thursday, September 10th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus, Uncategorized | 12 Comments »

    msign

Dining at M, a Cameron Mitchell Restaurant, is definitely a feast for the senses. From the enchanting ambience, to the colorful lighting, eclectic interior, and extraordinary views, M is the perfect place for a romantic dinner. Tastecasters recently sampled some dishes from its new menu, featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients, rich flavors; and all artistically presented.

    Overlooking the Scioto River

Overlooking the Scioto River at 2 Miranova Place, M is an elite Four Diamond property, as designated by AAA, and one of only two restaurants in Columbus and 756 nationwide to receive this prestigious rating.

    Promotions at M

Kristen Luff, general manager, welcomed our group and briefed us on their latest promotions. Listen to her here.

Wine enthusiast Thursday – for a limited time M is featuring half off all bottles of  wine priced at $100 or less.

Happy hour – Starting in October, M offers $5.00 after 5; $5 selected wines by  the glass and $5 martinis, Monday-Friday. On Fridays, happy hour includes half- priced sushi.

Now that we’ve penciled these in our calendars, it’s time to review the food…

    The fare at M

    Wasabi Roll

    Wasabi Roll

Executive Chef Erin Chittum created a wonderful variety of dishes for us to sample. We started with a Wasabi Roll consisting of tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, and wasabi peas. Besides the usual wasabi, it was also served with wasabi mayo; a lighter-tasting wasabi that didn’t sting going through your nose.

The Tuna Tartare was very mild, but flavorful. Arranged artistically on a long plate, this appetizer consisted of Hawaiian Big Island tuna, pickled cucumber, Yuzu vinaigrette, and wasabi tobiko. The shitake mushroom added a crunchy texture, and the white miso aioli was a perfect complement.

    Maryland Blue Crabcake

    Maryland Blue Crabcake

The Maryland Blue Crabcake was a big hit with the group. A generous size crabcake served on a bed of avocado, and finished with a plum tomato gazpacho. Personally, it was the tastiest crabcake I’ve ever eaten.

Next we tried the green salad of organic gem lettuce – a hybrid of Boston and Romaine lettuce. The creamy bleu cheese dressing did not overpower; and the candied pistachios sprinkled throughout added great flavor and texture.

On to the main course! The White Tuna entrée truly was a work of art. A generous wedge of thick tuna, dusted with porcini mushrooms, spring peas, and wild mushrooms was finished with a lobster emulsion. This may have been the group favorite, and proved to be very filling.

    Steak - N - Eggs

    Steak - N - Eggs

The other entrée we tried was the Steak-N-Eggs. M’s version of steak and eggs was a 7 oz. filet served on a bed of goat cheese hashbrowns, topped with a dippy quail egg and caviar, and complemented with a béarnaise sauce. Once again, artistically arranged, and the filet was cooked to perfection!

We tasted four side dishes: Truffle Mac and Cheese, Lobster Mashed Potatoes, Tater Tots, and Chophouse Corn. The Truffle Mac and Cheese was a creamy delight! The truffle oil gave this dish a rich flavor. The lobster mashed potatoes were really too good to be relegated to side dish status. Maine Lobster chunks were predominant throughout the mashed potatoes. The Tater Tots are nothing like you remember from your childhood. M’s Tater Tots had a smooth texture inside, and were served with horseradish sauce, which kicked the flavor up a notch. The Chophouse Corn was to die for – corn fried in bacon – a definite must-try.

Dessert was a real treat – Chilled apricot Moscato soup, fresh berries, and organic yogurt sorbet, garnished with a mint sprig. This was a perfect light ending to a great meal. If you are typically too full to eat dessert, you can easily make room for this one.

Executive Chef Chittum is a graduate of Columbus State, and has worked her way up through several of the Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, including Marcellas and Mitchell’s Ocean Club.  Erin introduces her creations to Tastecasting here.

Most romantic table in the city

M features the most romantic table in the city for a special occasion – a canopy surrounding a private circular booth underneath a chandelier. Although not open for lunch, M will be open for luncheon parties during December.

“Great people delivering genuine hospitality” is what M, and the entire family of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants is all about. Make your reservations at www.matmiranova.com, for a great dining experience.

Thank you Kristen and Erin, for a phenomenal Tastecasting experience!

    Skyline Chili – Sawmill Road

    Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

    Skyline Time

    It’s Skyline Time

Yeah I know. I should have been able to come up with a more creative title. I tried. They either have a great marketing tag or I have creative block. Let’s go with the first one. So this was my first tastecasting experience, my first blog entry and my first chillito. So if you are wonder why the heck they picked me for some content here, it is because I claimed to have eaten more Skyline per year then anyone else I know.

    Skyline Chili on Sawmill Road

Skyline Sawmill in Dublin is my home location and I’m lucky to have an 18 year Skyline expert as the owner. Scott knows how to make Skyline the right way. Fresh, hot and with so much cheese that it hides the top half of the bun and you have to move it to find the noodles on your three way. So is it fair to have such a coney crunching junkie on a tastecasting. I think so and here is why. I have grown so comfortable in ordering the stable conies and three ways that I can’t remember the last time I picked up their menu. Admittedly I was missing some great eats that I didn’t really expect to find at Skyline. Like the chip dip that you always attempt to make before tailgates. Yes they make it better than you do. The Chillito will not be overlooked again. It is like a giant cheese coney minus the hot dog and filled with goodness. And a great Greek salad that you would expect to find in a fine Greek restaurant. I too tend to forget that Skyline is a fine Greek restaurant founded by the Lambrinides’ in 1949. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyline_Chili
    3way

Experience and Creativity Are The Differentiators

Scott even shared some stories from when he was lucky enough to have lunch with founders. Scott’s is pretty much my hero for that. He even has his two daughters working the store with him. His experience in the business and creativity gives this location a few unique things from other Skyline locations. Like the Iron Coney Challenge. The record is just 16 conies in 30 min. You can beat that right? There is a football season menu complete with dips, and chilli cheese fries with bacon.

In March if you can beat Scott’s bracket you will be in for a free meal. And in the near future the Sawmill location with have Gyros. Can’t wait to top mine with Chilli. There is also Kids night on Tuesday at the Sawmill location.

    Skyline For Life Contest

Finally, starting on August 24th you can play at any location for the Grand Prize of SKYLINE FOR LIFE! I almost didn’t put that last one in there because I am selfishly devising my own strategy to win this. So whenever your feeling good and hungry… find on of the 14 locations in Columbus or you can even find them in Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida. Yeah it is their good marketing. (Hearing their jingle in my head now). You can also become a fan by joining them on their Facebook page.

    Mezzo Italian Kitchen & Wine

    Thursday, August 13th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 2 Comments »

    A Shining Star In Gahanna

Mezzo, Beautiful Mezzo. Why haven’t I been here before? Located at 130 Creekside Plaza in Gahanna, Ohio, just a few minutes off of Interstate 270. I jumped off on exit 35 B coming from the North drove into Gahanna, turned left on Mill Street and affordable parking under ground was available. It was a $1.00 an hour. As you come up out of the parking area you find Mezzo nestled back in corner in this contemporary open air plaza with views of fountains and the Big Walnut Creek. The flowers and greenery greet you as approach the open air patio. You could see right into the restaurant lounge area and hear the live acoustic music. I found out later the guitarist on this night was none other than Terry Efaw from McGuffy Lane. This was a terrific start to a great evening.

Pictures Are Worth A Thousand Words

Before everyone arrived I wandered the restaurant inside and out and captured a few pictures to make this video. It will give you a quick tour of the event along with some really cool music. Enjoy.

The interior was more impressive than the exterior. When you first walke in you’re greeted by the word Mezzo etched in glass behind the hosts station, exposed brick walls, colorful tables amazing lighting and granite topped bars.

We had the opportunity to sit in leather high back booths and gaze out into the restaurant. A vast collection of wines are on display throughout the restaurant. The white linen is pressed and the tables were crisply set. As I looked up at the arched exposed ceilings I noticed that the light fixtures were decorated with silverware.

    Mezzo Italian Kitchen in Gahanna

This is a very well designed and artsy establishment and it fits perfectly in the Gahanna Creekside setting.

Our hosts for the Mezzo tasting were John Cohen, General Manager and the Executive Chef Magellan Moore. Chef Moore described for us the extensive menu and the key differentiators for Mezzo’s. Both he and Jon mentioned the contemporary spin to italian recipes and the passion for serving on the freshest ingredients.

General Manager Jon Cohen Executive Chef, Magellan Moore

    Wine and Dine it’s Fine

You can tell Mezzo prides itself on it’s extensive wine list, but they also serve cocktails. We started the evening off with the house Chardonnay I believe was called Guenoc from vineyards in Lake County, California. For me, it was the perfect start.

If you enjoy wines, Tuesdays in the Summer they have a “Summer Wine Tasting on the Patio.” It’s 5 wines for $10.00. Andy Roahe is the wine director and would love to have you join him between 5:30 and 8:00pm throughout the Summer. I am sure you’ll want to stay and have dinner afterwards. I thought I would let Jon invite you out himself. When stop by make sure you tell him TasteCasting sent you.

    A Menu Worth Mentioning

What a menu. For starters, we were presented with the Pizzetta Flatbread pizza which included several of my favorite taste combinations. How can you go wrong with caramelized onions, roma tomatoes and roasted garlic?  Those ingredients were a terrific compliment to the grilled chicken. Next up we tried the golden brown mozzarella fritters with risotto and mozzarella. I tried the Pomodora sauce, but I personally wasn’t a fan. I enjoyed the fritter just by itself. Jean Collier is our newest TasteCasting team member and had a few things to add on her blog called Dishing it Up Columbus.

Jon brought out one of the signature pasta dishes they call Lasagna al Forno. The veal, Beef and Ricatta were the real stars on this plate. For an entree we sampled a lunch portion of the Pan-Seared Sea Scallops. I’ve never ordered or thought I would enjoy scallops, but Jon told us that “this” was his favorite. His excitement encouraged me to give them a try. After the first taste, I was delighted! I started moving around sauteed vegtables to get to the next scallop. I looked on the menu to see how Chef Moore prepared this. I found it was prepared with a very rich, sweet corn and bacon risotto and a drizzling of champagne vinaigrette.

    A Grand Finale

Just when we thought the evening was coming to a close Jon and Chef Moore surprised us with servings of tasty desserts. We all enjoyed the New York style cheese cake, Tiramisu, chocolate mousse with fresh strawberries as a garnish. I can say we all walked away with smiles on our faces.

There are so many reasons to give Mezzo Italian Kitchen a try. The ambiance, the menu, the staff, the location and the city. It was truly a pleasure to experience. If you are looking for an amazing place for date night, or, you want to impress a business client or hold a private party this is a destination you should consider.

Mezzo is Serving Up Events For Everyone

There are weekly events that include Martinis on Monday, Wine on the Patio on Tuesday, Acoustic music from Terry Efaw on Wednesday and Live music by Craig Goodwin and Mark Frye of Phil Dirt and the Dozers along with a 1/2 off the wine list on Thursday. After you stop out, come on back to TasteCasting and leave your impression of Mezzo in our comments.

Sugar, Inc. Cupcakes and Tea Salon

    Thursday, August 6th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 5 Comments »

    6460_1210519500047_1140533764_30660565_4664206_n6460_1210529660301_1140533764_30660593_1888131_n6460_1210521020085_1140533764_30660567_3675884_n

Take a Zen-like atmosphere, add four generations worth of recipes, and what do you get? You get Sugar, Inc. Cupcakes and Tea Salon, a hidden gem in Old Dublin.

What makes Sugar, Inc. work in today’s world? A focus on ingenuous flavors, certainly, but there’s also a concentration on otherworldly calm, tradition, and  community. Sitting in the Sugar, Inc, dining room, you can’t help but be enveloped in the coocooning experience: calming colors, spartan furnishings, and hushed tones, but they set the stage for the real stars of the show: the cupcakes, tea, and community that can only be found inside.

Owner Ava Misseldine comes from a line of tea vendors – despite the fact that three generations came before her, she decided to pursue a major in Chemical Engineering at the Ohio State University, but gave it up upon graduation, favoring a soothing environment where one could escape the stresses of modern life. Offering a womb-like environment, Ava developed an Eden of exotic teas, handcrafted cupcakes, and conversation.

    6460_1210535180439_1140533764_30660623_7589773_n

It’s difficult to pick a favorite flavor at Sugar, Inc. because Ava changes flavors so frequently – every other day, actually. One week, margarita is the best selling flavor, mojito the next. While her base recipes are her “Nana’s,” her 100% organic flavors are purely a result of her imagination and hours of experimentation.

    6460_1210533820405_1140533764_30660613_6163766_n

In addition to her clever cupcakes, Ava offers a full line of teas, sure to cure anything that ails you, but what you may not know is that Sugar, Inc. is also a lunchtime destination with a line of salads and smoothies, as well as 17 flavors of Ben and Jerry’s ice creams. Free WiFi is available in the dining room and there is ample parking in the rear lot (good to know, as traffic can be a bit overwhelming to those new to the area).

Ask for the Mexican Chocolate, which was a favorite among the TC team – it’s a smooth blend of chocolate, cinnamon, and chili.

Serendipity Ice Cream and Coffee House Serendipity Side Walk Chalk

You can find Serenedipity Ice Cream and Coffee House just off of State Route 3 in Westerville, Ohio near the Otterbein University campus. If you’re coming from I-270 heading north you turn on East College Ave and on your right at 33 East College Avenue you will be greeted by this fun sign, a few sidewalk chalk buckets, a Gazebo, and a watering spot for our the four legged friends. If you’re driving, parking is a little tight on E. College Street, but just up the street and around the corner is access to plenty of parking in the rear of the coffee house. There is a nice outdoor patio with tables, chairs and umbrellas.

As you walk to the front there are plenty of places to sit outside. They have games available for kids of all ages. I would have to say my favorite location was on the big white swing on the front porch and the the row of colorful chairs. It give the coffee house just the right amount of color and whimsy. As you walk inside you are greeted to a collection of drawings, paintings and unique decor including the tables made from old compact discs, stain glass windows, colorful tile on the walls and comfortable seating. If you’re a guitar player the also have a few guitars laying around and you’re welcome to pull up a chair and strum.

Before we got started Debbie Mitchell, the co-owner of Serendipity Ice Cream and Coffee Shop talks us through the wonderful things we could expect from the tasting. You can hear her explaination in the video below:

The TasteCasting team was treated to several items off the menu which was afford-ably priced. We were treated to tastes of the paninis, quesadillas, and make your own stomboli. On the side we were served a taste of the yummy sweet potato fries and breaded spicy pickles.

Stromboli from Serendipity Sweet Potato Fries from Serendipity

To top off the evening the we were treated to ice cream with flavor burst. There are eight different flavors and we sampled a few. We were also treated to homemade chocolate chip cookies with ice cream on top.

Serendipity’s Ice Cream and Coffee Shop has so much more to offer including all day breakfast, soups, fresh salads, tea, espresso and of course ice cream, milk shakes, and sundaes. King Gyros, A Little Gem In Whitehall

    Friday, July 17th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 3 Comments »

At first glance, the little building at 400 Hamilton Road looks like any other small fast food restaurant, but spend two hours inside sampling the food and anyone will understand why there is a steady stream of customers lining up even in the middle of the afternoon when other restaurants are typically experiencing a lull.

    king-gyros-car-show-0671

King Gyros, owned and managed by Yianni Chalkias, can seat about 20 people comfortably and has a drive-through. Yianni is a first-generation Greek-American. He and his family opened the restaurant in 1991 using a handful of recipes handed down from his father. Most of the dishes on the menu do not exceed $10, so a family dinner at King Gyros will not break the bank. Parents will be happy to know that there is a kid’s menu with some less exotic options, such as hamburgers and chicken fingers.

Yianni started our team out with some heavy appetizers, including the spanakopita with feta cheese and kalamata olives. One Taste Caster exclaimed the spanakopita was the best he had ever eaten, hands down. (It might have also been the biggest spanakopita we have ever seen.) The filo dough is flaky and flavorful, and the spinach and cheese are extremely fresh. The flavor of the olives is nothing like what anyone has come to expect from olives, and the team recommends eating them by themselves to fully appreciate it.

The next dish served was the fried calamari and smelts, which are fish fries. Both were very tender, and the crust was crunchy and not oily at all. The dressing added a nice flavor for dipping. Definitely a good appetizer option that’s a bit less exotic. The team then sampled Greek cabbage rolls and meatballs, which looked like they should be served at a more expensive restaurant. The flavor was extraordinary. The lamb, beef, and rice mixture in the rolls combined nicely. The light acidity of the tomato sauce over it provided a nice contrast in flavors.

For the main course, Yianni brought two lamb dishes to the table. One was a combination of lamb legs, lamb shanks, and peppers, which were served over saffron rice. Saffron is one of the most expensive spice in the world, which is why you don’t often see it in everyday cuisine. The other dish was Yianni’s Lamb-kabob,  marinated lamb, peppers, and red onions served over the saffron rice.

Yianni then presented a plate of four types of Greek pastries for dessert.Yianni’s baklava was extremely fresh, and Yianni does the baking on-site everyday. The picture should speak for itself.

    king-gyros

King Gyros is a hidden gem here in Columbus that you must try. The staff is friendly, the portions are huge, and the flavor of the food is unique and superb. What’s more, all the prices are very reasonable. They even have a drive-thru, so you can get your Greek fix on the run at lunchtime. You can visit King Gyros on the web where you can actually order your food for pickup. King Gyros can also be followed on Twitter at @gyros2nv.

    TehKu Tea Company

    Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 3 Comments »

A Hidden Jewel In Historic Downtown Dublin, Ohio

    TehKu Tea

The team was invited to tea and food tasting at TehKu Tea Company in historic downtown Dublin, Ohio. Just off of Rt 161 on Dublin’s South High Street you will find TehKu in a small collection of shops just off South High Street. Located at 55 South High Street in a small plaza, It is somewhat hidden from street view so you have to know where to look. After a taste of Tehku I would recommend that you make a trip and experience it for yourself.

This is a great place to get away from the home office for meetings. Free WiFi and a terrific meeting space that you can rent for $25.00 per hour that seats up to 16 people. If you need to share presentations, websites, or videos or other multi-media you can pay $45.00 per hour and use flat panel.

Inggrie Merriman, co-owner of Tehku was our host for the tasting. As food was being served, Inggrie shared the story of how TehKu came to be. As she described her journey, I could hear the passion in her voice about her business, her family and their relationship with tea. We also learned that the name TehKu means “My Tea” in Indonesian.

    More Than A Tea Company

We were treated to an amazing selection of food. It all started off with soup, salad and smoothies. The Irish potato soup was very good.  I also tried the chicken noodle and really enjoyed every bite, sip, and slurp. I was amazed to hear that the base for all the soups at TehKu was TEA!  Following the soup we tried the TehKu House Salad. Everyone remarked about the taste, texture, and amazing flavor.

The sandwiches were presented to the team and they included a vegetarian sandwich,  a fruited chicken sandwich and roast beef zinger – I could taste a hint of horseradish.

    Teas from TehKu

We learned a great deal about the variety of teas and their specific taste. Inggrie described the difference between green tea, black tea, white tea and Inggrie’s favorite – oolong. We heard the story of her and her husband in search of the perfect oolong tea. We tried several teas and I enjoyed them all, but I found, I preferred the premium black tea named “My Favorite Blend”.  I would consider it a dessert tea because it was made with almond pieces, chocolate, and South African Rooibos. I also enjoyed the tea called My Quite Time. This was a Sencha green tea, gunpowder green, strawberry, pineapple, mini tuocha and sunflower blossoms. I couldn’t stop, there so I decided to purchase these two teas to enjoy at home and I found a tea named Tropical Breeze and I had to have it. It sounded like a great tea for a late afternoon break from a long day at work.

A Great Lunch Spot or Hold a Meeting with Clients

TehKu Tea Company is a great spot to meet a friend or client for lunch. It’s a contemporary tea house, with a terrific menu, great environment and really just minutes away from anywhere in Columbus. I highly recommend that you stop in, have a cup of tea and try a scone. The chocolate chip scones were my favorite. After you visit once, I know you’ll be back. The meeting room is terrific and a great place to meet with your clients away from your place of business or home office.

A Taste of Yosick’s Artisan Chocolates & Pastries and Espresso

    Friday, July 3rd, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 2 Comments »

A Tasty Stop In German Villiage

Opened in December of 2007 and located in historic German Village at 539 S. Fifth St you will find Yosick’s Artisian Chocolates & Pastries and Espresso. One of only two sit down kosher establishments in Columbus chocked full of delicious and delightfully designed eatables. Our team of six TasteCasters were invited in and treated at no cost to a variety of the menu items. Our host for this complimentary tasting was Kristy Yosick, the owner, and certified artisian.

    Charming & Chocolate

The charming store fronts in German Villiage are so photogenic and Yosick’s is no different. On the corner of Jackson and 5th streets surrounded by the historic brick streets of German Village the team approached the Yosick’s and the cameras came some great images of the store front were captured for you to enjoy.

    Yosick's in German Villiage

As you walk into the location, you’re surrounded by baked goods including the Orange Cookies and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip that after tasting them I couldn’t help but compare them to my grandmother’s home made recipe. The espresso machines are visible and the aroma of the coffee mixed nicely with the incredible display of artisan chocolates in the case. I tried my best to capture the experience in the video below:

    Something For Everyone

The menu for the tasting including a tuna salad that was presented to us in a common Jewish presentation. We also tried a really light and tasty Israeli salad made with tomato, cucumber, and red onions.  As we were tasting the salads, you could smell the pizza’s in the oven. As someone who loves the taste of caramelized onions I favored the roasted red pepper, caramelized onion and green olive pizza. The Roma tomato, baby spinach, and toasted almond pizza had fans among the team too.

Following the salad and pizza the chocolates arrived on the table and Kristy Yosick described with great passion the art of making great chocolate. Just like coffee or great wine an artisan creates a blend of different chocolates from various origins to come up with their unique taste. Kristy treated us to small sample of a few of the various chocolates she uses from Belgium, Grenada, and the East coast of Africa. Her blend which is a closely held secret is used in each and everyone of her recipes.

We experienced three different chocolates from the collection including my favorite which was the the Spiced Chi Ganache.

    Chocolate from Yosick's

We finished off the night with bite of cheesecake, the Orange Cookie and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and a blissful bite of brownie. Kristy let us know that her brownies are based on Katherine Hepburn’s Brownie Recipe. I’ll be trying this one at home!

**A Tweet, Tweet, Tweet Pizza Special**

For the entire month of July you can call, stop in and order three (3) of the amazing pizzas for $25.00. You can also follow Yosick’s on Twitter @Yosicks

Try It For Yourself –  Let Us Know About Your Experience

As you can tell from the write up there are a number of things to please just about everyone’s palette. New menu items are coming soon including summer salads and soups. The restaurant is open from 6 am – 8:30 pm, 7 days a week. They provide local delivery and love to serve clients office parties and celebration. Dunkin’ Donuts Delighting Central Ohio

    Sunday, June 28th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 1 Comment »

    Dunkin' Donuts Sign

    Surprised and Eggcited

While traveling,  I see Dunkin’ Donuts just about everywhere. I was surprised and excited about Dunkin Donuts entering the central Ohio market. Seven TasteCasting™ team members gladly attended the Saturday morning tasting hosted by USA Restaurant Director of Advertising and Marketing Kristin Stratton. She let us know in advance we were going to be tasting new eggciting breakfast items.

    We Were Treated

We were treated to several menu items including: coffees, both iced and hot, wraps, and flatbread breakfast sandwiches with hash browns. The team snapped pictures, sent texts, twittered, and shot video and, in between bites, told their own Dunkin’ Donut stories from places they have lived and places they visited.

    TasteCasting Team At Dunkin' Donuts

    Background and Introductions

USA Restaurant Developers is the franchisee behind central Ohio expansion.  After the tasting, and before I started writing this post, I found a great article written by Business First of Columbus reporter Dan Eaton. In the August 29, 2008 article it states that Dunkin’ Donuts has more than 8,000 shops worldwide, 6,000 of them in the U.S.  Less than 300  shops are west of the Mississippi River. It’s Dunkin Donuts’ goal to have 15,000 stores nationwide by 2020. Almost one year later, Dunkin Donuts franchisor USA Restaurant Developers, has two locations open in central Ohio, and more underway, according to Kristin Stratton. The current locations can be found North of I-270 near Highbluffs and at the corner of Broad and High in downtown Columbus.

It was a warm day, so right out of the gates I tried the Dunkin’ Donuts’ original iced coffee with a shot of Blueberry flavoring. Kristin described that the Dunkin’ Difference is in the double brewing. Double brewing with double the amount of coffee insures that you will get the full flavor. This is important because ice can melt and water down the taste. You can check out the entire tasting in pictures by watching the slide show below.

The entire team was able to pick from hot beverages and cold beverages to start things out. We were introduced to two of the newest drinks. I tried the Stawberry Coolattas and immediately found my summer drink of choice at Dunkin’ Donuts. I also tasted the Latte Lite. The small Latte Lite comes in at just 80 calories. All the taste with little going to your waist. Dunkin’ Donuts have also done a nice job producing a nutrition guide for those of us watching our intake and waistlines.
    Iced Coffee with Blueberry Flavor

The team had the opportunity to try the oven toasted Flatbread sandwich made with egg white and turkey sausage and Reduced Fat Provolone and Mozzarella cheese. We also tasted the new egg and cheese Wake up Wrap. Both are on my list of items to order during upcoming visits.
One of the team members asked if the breakfast sandwiches featured were available only in the morning like the other establishments. We found out that the sandwiches were available all day and it is one of the differentiators they would like people to know about. If you feel like a breakfast sandwich for lunch, dinner or late night you can get one at Dunkin’ Donuts.
Oh, by the way we also tried a few donuts while at the tasting and my favorite was the patriotically decorated Stars and Stripes donut. It was colorful and very tasty.

There are several specials running now including the 16 oz. @1.99 Coolatta’s and .99 cent Wake up Wrap until July 14th, 2009. So stop in and try any of the menu items from Dunkin’ Donuts and let them know you read about them at TasteCasting.

HOGGY’S RESTAURANT & CATERING “There’s More to Love at Hoggy’s”

    Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 5 Comments »

Right Around The Corner – Minutes Away

This eatery is their neighborhood style location.  It’s located in quaint downtown Grandview at 1416 W. 5th Ave. Grandview Ohio.  Sitting on the Hoggy’s patio, you can hear the birds sing and the heart beat of a small town center all around you.  You here the cars pass by and enjoy the beautifully landscaped patio with cafe style seating.  It is as if you are in a small European town.

The Areas First Real BBQ Joint

Let’s begin with a brief history. Hoggy’s first opened its doors an June 27, 1991, and quickly became a destination for those who wanted the very best BBQ.  But long before Hoggy’s smoker was loaded with apple wood, its entrepreneurial spirit was committed to bringing real BBQ to central Ohio.  Countless hours were dedicated to the creation of Hoggy’s…the make up of the menu, the atmosphere, and how hoggy’s would be different…no detail was too small.  The result of these conversations became the focus of what we now know as Hoggy’s…the area’s first real BBQ joint.

    Let

A Few Words From Mark Turner

Mark addressed the team  as we anticipated the feast to come. We had the pleasure to dine with Mark Turner, one of three principle owners of Hoggy’s.  We asked if he would tell us a little about his vision of Hoggy’s and what they are striving to accomplish in standing out among so many other restaurant options that diners have.

BBQ is the feature but as you look at the menu you discover there are many other options.

    Starter tower
    Starter tower

The general manager, Libby Haag, put together quite a feast for our palates to ponder.  We were treated first to an assortment of what they call STARTERS.  As Matt, our server, delivered the assortment to the table, you could only say ‘WOW’.  This is what Mark the owner says they are trying to accomplish.  They want the passing of a dish to the table next to you to sell their product, but more on that later.  The STARTERS can be served on towers which are placed in the center of the table for easy access.  These towers hold three plates of STARTERS.  We tried the Loaded Nachos, Hand Dipped Onion Rings, and Smoked Wings with both there original BBQ sauce and Daddy’s Cajun Rub.  The Cajun Rub was my favorite.  Mark Turner would describe each as we tried them.  He was like a proud parent showing off pictures of his kids.

    Salads To Suit Everyones’ Taste

No sooner did we finish the STARTERS when the salads arrived.

We each had a portion of three of the varied salads on there menu.  We

Fine sliced onion ring on this salad
Fine sliced onion ring on this salad

tasted the Creamy Chicken with fresh pulled chicken in their homemade mix with  seedless grapes.  It was served on a bed of lettuce in a crunchy tortilla shell.  The Blue Cheese Apple Salad had fresh slices of Granny Smith apples tossed with mixed greens, pecans, blue cheese, and cornbread.  Moist cornbread like this I have never had.  Leftovers are often taken home for breakfast with sugar and milk.  A greek place Hoggy’s is not, but the Mediterranean Chicken with grilled chicken breast, Greek dressing, feta cheese, kalamata olives, fresh green beans, and warm fresh baked cornbread  would please the palate of a discerning Greek.

Can’t linger,  the main coarse is arriving.

Hoggy's rack of ribs with award winning cornbread
Hoggy’s rack of ribs with award winning cornbread

Let me first say, the sides are as good as the entrees.  We tasted Smoked Baby Back Ribs, Smoked Pulled Chicken, Smoked Pulled Pork, Smoked Texas Style Brisket and Jamaican Salmon.  No favorites here for me.  They were all so good I would not be able to choose.  You can tell the effort that has gone into putting together this menu.  The side dishes served to us are like no others I can ever remember having.  Take the mac-n-cheese.  The macaroni was tender and the cheese was smooth.  There was just a slight tart taste to it.  It rates as my favorite side and by far the best mac-n-cheese I have ever had.  Oh, by the way, I make pretty good mac-n-cheese.

I always answer the question “have you saved room for dessert” with a firm “No!”  But, when Matt brought out the three layer chocolate cake, I could not speak.  This is another example of the WOW factor Mark was talking about.  This serving of cake could be shared by four people.  Just look at the photo.  Again, you can tell that this is no restaurant supply cake.  Hoggy’s bakes all of there cakes fresh from scratch as well as the cornbread mentioned before.

    Triple Layer Apple Cake
    Triple Layer Apple Cake

Just look at all those pieces of apple. The Triple Layer Apple Cake has a huge piece of apple in every bite

    Is it your birthday?

If your dining at Hoggy’s and it’s your birthday, or it’s just close, it’s party time.

Click here for video of Dan’s Birthday and don’t miss the Triple Layer Double Chocolate Cake.

    Kids eat free on Wednesday

Yes, kids eat free on Wednesday.  They also receive balloons and there are games for them to play.  This is truly a fun enviroment.

The Olive Tree is not only a symbol of peace…it means great food!

    Thursday, June 18th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 5 Comments »

    The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe

Fabulous Mediterranean Food In Hilliard, Ohio

The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe brings the Mediterranean to Columbus.  Located at 3185 Hilliard-Rome Rd., the cafe is tucked away in a quiet strip.  Throughout the Mediterranean region, the olive tree is a symbol of peace.  Extend an olive branch and all is forgiven.  But there is no need for forgiveness when it comes to the fabulous food at The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe in Hilliard.

David Mor Owner of The Olive Tree Cafe in Hilliard, Ohio

    Meet The Owner

Owner David Mor, a native of Israel, has been cooking up Mediterranean favorites for family & friends for years.  He has been prodded with the question “Why don’t you open a restaurant?”.  Lucky for us he ran out of answers.

    Chef Johnny Braransi

David and chef Johnny Braransi, also a native of Israel, have combined the welcoming family feel with great food.  The foods are favorites from Israel, Greece and Lebanon.  They combine their heritage and love for cooking into all of their dishes.

    Starting Off Fresh And Healthy

For Appetizers we were served a combination of Hummus, Baba Ghanoj, Eggplant Salad, Matbucha and Spicy Feta. The Hummus was creamy with just enough olive oil and needed no pita for spreading.  Many in the group had never tried Baba Ghanoj much less pronounced it.  All were introduced to this Mediterranean favorite which blends roasted eggplant, tahini, garlic, parsley & lemon juice.  The garlic and lemon juice add a kick to your tastebuds at the end of each bite.  I’d never heard of Matbucha but it is now a staple on my list.  It is a traditional Moroccan blend of ripe tomatoes slow-cooked with roasted red & jalapeno peppers.  Finished with fresh garlic and olive oil and served with pita bread.  Absolutely divine!

    FALAFEL, FALAFEL…Get Your FALAFEL Here!

Originally made in Egypt, this crunchy on the outside, ground chicpeas & parsley on the inside is a tasty treat!  Falafel is often sold on the streets in large cities and served in pita bread.  Don’t forget the delectable tahina sauce.  On the positive side, even though it’s fried, it’s pure protein!

    I Love Saying Tabouli

Tabouli is a must at any Mediterranean feast.  It is the #1 salad in Lebanon.  Fresh chopped parsley, tomato, cucumber, olive oil among other intriguing spices make this dish authentic and a visual delight.  The aroma of the fresh parsley just tells you that it’s a healthy dish regardless of how much you eat.  Parsley is know to freshen your breath so I’m sure it cancels out the onion throughout the dish.

TasteCasting Team At The Olive Tree Tasting

By now, I hope you are seeing a trend…olive oil.  Mediterranean cuisine is know as one of the healthiest in the world.  Add a glass of red wine and who knows how long you could live!  Olive oil is a heart healthy oil and the myriad of vegetables is sure to complete your pyramid requirements for the week.

Gyro Meat And Spicy ChickenOH, MY!

    img_5192

To further tempt our tastebuds, we were served Gyro Meat and Spicy Chicken, entrees served with rice and pita bread.  Let me tell you, I was able to cut the Gyro meat & the chicken with my fork.  The chicken is spicy enough to make your tongue take notice but not worthy of a more than one glass of water.  Served on a bed of rice which is flavored with nutmeg & cinnamon.  The rice melts in your mouth without ever needing a pinch of butter.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

To round out our amazing meal David and his wife Tammy served us Baklava and assorted cakes.  Much too full from partaking in the above tasty treats, these were a must-try.  The baklava had just enough honey to hold it together and drip down your hands while the cakes were small and dainty.

    Tammy and David Mor

Check out their menu online. www.olivetreecolumbus.com

A Special Offer for TasteCasting and Twitter Followers

Special Offer through June. If you mention TasteCasting and code OTMC you’ll get 50% your second sandwich when you buy the first sandwich at full price. What a treat. Thank you to the Mor’s and the Olive Tree team.

The Hill's Market Meat Department Lyabswe'a Beef Rub

Jill mentioned the food was prepared tonight by Mandy Stuart the in-house caterer. As we walked by the meat selections you can find all the various items used by the caterer to prepare the food for the tasting tonight including The Hills own BBQ sauce and Hills own Rub as well as Lysander’s Beef rub. The products come highly recommended to ensure that when you prepare the meat it comes out tender and tasty.

Tasting On The Veranda At The Hills Market

As we all sat down at the Veranda the team brought out a selection of  their finest meats, prepared with the products described and the smart phones, digital cameras, and video devices all appeared as the tasting was underway.

Brownies Branded As Brunettes and Blondes

The first treat I experienced was the environment. As someone who appreciates attention to brand, I could tell immediately a great deal of attention was placed on branding the environment and uniquely naming the brownies. Everything from the wall paper, lighting fixtures, display cases, packaging apparel, and displays positively reinforce the on-line brand. I also appreciated the brownie naming convention of brunettes and blondes. The incredible experience continued when we started the tasting off with brownie cheesecake, brownie truffles, and a stauf’s special blend coffee. All of that was followed by a collection of Sugardaddy’s Brunettes, and Blondes to include:

The American Beauty a delicious blend of natural peanut butter, toasted chopped premium peanuts and chocolate chunks.

    prod_americanbeauty prod_fiery

Once I heard about the combination of Chocolate, Chipotle Chili and Cinnamon I had to try the brownie called FIERY. It was just the right amount of fire, spice and blended just right.

    prod_richmint prod_tahiti

I didn’t stop there. I had to move quickly to try the RICH MINT.  This brunette bombshell was double everything. Double mint, premium double chocolate and double mint buttercream icing. After sampling the Brunettes I moved on to taste the Blondes. I tasted the TAHITI and was blown away by the explosive taste combination of toasted coconut, white and dark chocolate cashews and pineapple. It was an island vacation for my tastebuds. The CINNAMON brownie also found its way onto plate. The toasted pecans, and cinnamon streusel was fabulous.

I enjoyed the tasting so much an assortment of the brownies were purchased to share with my family and closest friends.

Ten Pin Alley & Spikes Will Bowl You Over

    Thursday, May 28th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 2 Comments »

    Ten Pin Alley & Spikes

This Won’t Be A Secret For Long

Not many people around Columbus and Central Ohio know that we have a one-of-a-kind entertainment venue right in our backyard. Ten Pin Alley & Spikes is a unique, boutique bowling alley patio and grill that also serves up three regulation sand volleyball courts for exciting fun inside and out. This entertainment destination is just minutes from anywhere in Central Ohio. Ten Pin Alley & Spikes is located  at 5499 Constitution Blvd, Hilliard, Ohio. After experiencing the newly renovated lanes, restaurant and tasting serveral of chef Andy’s specialties, this destination won’t be a secret for long and I know you’ll be bowled over.

A Ten Pin Alley & Spikes Slideshow

Taking Bowling to The Next Level

    ten-pin-alley-team

The management and staff at Ten Pin Alley & Spikes have taken Bowling to the next level. As you walk in you can tell instantly this bowling at its best.

The 50’s retro branding is a nice touch and it is everywhere. From the logos on the carpet, the colors on the walls, the signage on the lanes. Not everything is 1950’s The 21st century is also represented by the many high-definition flat panel televisions hanging from every wall. I was so impressed with the surroundings I almost forgot we were there to taste the food.

    A Quick Tour

Before the tasting we had Andy Beougher, Ten Pin Alley & Spikes’ Marketing Manager give us a quick tour and tell us a little bit about the venue. Thanks Andy!

Made From Scratch by Chef Andy

After taking in the whole experience the entire Ten Pin Alley team welcomed us to the event and we were introduced to Chef Andy Shelley. Chef Andy described the Ten Pin Alley menu as “Global Contemporary American.” “They’re familiar dishes from all over the world, served in a Modern American way.”  I thought to myself, Ten Pin Alley is more like a very nice restaurant with a bowling alley attached rather than a bowling alley with a restaurant.

    Ten Pin Alley Wings

One-by-one the staff presented servings of Bruschetta, Big Lebowski Nachos and Sweet Potato Fries and Wings to get us started. The Bruschetta included five slices of grilled crostini with fresh diced tomato, lavender, garlic, parmesan and olive oil.

    Big Lebowski Nachos

After tasting this I forgot that I was in a bowling alley and moved on to the Big Lebowski Nachos. Chef Andy explained everything is made from scratch included the home smoked pulled pork used for the Nachos. I finished up by trying a few of the hand cut sweet potato fries. I could taste a hint of cinnamon and brown sugar and loved them. The wings went so fast I couldn’t get my hands on one!

    Flat Breads

As soon as we finished up the Bruschetta, Nachos, and Sweet Potato Fries and Wings, we were treated to Chef Andy’s specialty flatbreads served on a 12″ square crust. The wild mushroom flat bread combined several types of mushrooms sauteed with garlic and herbs, topped with mozzarella. The caramelized onion flatbread  included two of my favorite toppings in crumbled bleu cheese and bacon! They looked as good as they tasted.

The tasting didn’t stop there.  We were treated to two the amazing Spike’s Burger topped with Carmelized onions, BBQ sauce, smoked gouda cheese and tomato. The sandwiches were so large Chef Andy had to pull out the big knife and cut our food for us.

    I Was Surprised!

    7-10 Burger

The biggest surprises for me and my taste-buds were the 7-10 Burger and the Fish Tacos. The tasty surprise on the 7-10 Burger was the fried egg and maple dijon mustard. It was delicious. Equally surprising and unexpectedly delicious were the Fish Tacos. Yes…Fish Tacos! Made with breaded tilapia sautéed with mango and green chili sauce on warm soft tortillas and served with a side of citrus rice prepared in orange juice.

    Gutter Balls Are Fun Too

As we finished up the tasting, twittering, photos I had to remind myself that I really was in a bowling alley. Not just any bowling alley, but Ten Pin Alley. This was a special treat! It was getting late, but, I couldn’t leave before I had the chance to throw a few strikes and more than a few gutter balls. @AssistCoach’s Brian Lockrey challenged me to a game and after 8 frames we decided we were both equally unqualified to be on these lanes competing. We decided we would just have a great time, and cheer each other on to a couple scores combined that would be less than 200. I guess the professional bowlers tour is out of the question.

    Sand Volleyball Too

    Spikes Volleyball

I wandered outside to check out volleyball action at Spikes. Leagues were playing and others were gathered around the various tables socializing and enjoying the weather. If you’re into Volleyball, it is worth a trip to check it out. Bring your friends or team mates. Have a drink, order some appetizers and socialize next to the sand volleyball action.

    A Fun-Filled Family Destination

    img_4689

Ten Pin Alley & Spikes is a great family destination and the kids, young and old will have a great time and enjoy the kids menu of popular  items including chicken fingers, cheesburger, pizza and cheese sticks. And for the kids, the lanes sport bumper rails to make sure every throw knocks down the pins. They also provide ball guides that launch the ball down the lane so even the youngest bowlers can have a great time.

Open for Lunch, Dinner and Special Events

    Spikes Burger

If you’re looking for a new lunch spot to bring your friends, or you want to entertain guests and give them a unique dining experience you can’t go wrong with this combination of fun, food, and family style entertainment. If you are involved in planning corporate events, birthdays or team building events Ten Pin Alley & Spikes should be on speed dial. Contact Andy the Marketing Manger and tell him TasteCasting sent you. As I said at the beginning of this post this venue won’t stay a secret for long. Come on out and try our menu, meet Chef Andy or Andy the Marketing Manager. You won’t be sorry.

Bob Evans-Not Just Your Grandparents Restaurant Anymore

    Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 6 Comments »

    Summer Menu Tasting With Style

When I say Bob Evans what’s the first thing you think of?  Country cooking?  Sausage & Biscuits?  Not anymore.  Bob Evans is now a Homestyle Restyle destination for all ages.  20 members of TasteCasting were in two cities for the teams first every simal-tasting. The team in Columbus, Ohio, and Leesburg, Virginia were warmly greeted and treated to all the delicious items from their summer menu launching nationwide May 15th.

    Homestyle Restyle

The Homestyle Restyle is Bob Evans’ way of contemporizing the homestead by bringing the “Home of Homestyle” to life.   “Bob Evans is looking to bring the “Home of Homestyle” to life as a differentiated, contemporary and relevant Bob Evans dining experience for our guests,” says Mary Cusick, senior vice president of marketing.  The Graceland location, 5091 N. High St.,  has the feel of a homey “eat-in kitchen” with tile floors and a flat screen TV mounted on the wall.  The outer parameters sport banquettes which offer the cozy feel similar to that of your dining room.  The Big Red Round table serves as a gathering spot for families.  Add to all this WIFI and plug-in outlets for electronics.  We might as well call it “Bob Evans 2.0″

    A Tasty Summer Menu

The summer menu boasts mouth-watering appetizers. I’m a firm beliver in dessert before dinner and The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Fries are lightly battered and dusted with powdered sugar, caramel dipping sauce is served on the side, of bob-evans-appetizers-22course.  Other choices are Loaded Baked Potato Bites, Bob Evans Wildfire Chicken Quesadilla, County Fair Cheese Bites and Itsy Bitsy Sandwiches (pickles add texture and taste).  You can’t go wrong with any of these.  They combine ingredients with “harmonizing flavors”, Brian Murphy, Executive Development Chef, says that is the key to fabulouse cuisine.  All menu items utilize ingredients and spices that don’t overpower one another.  Chef Murphy described the items with enthusiasm & excitement.  One can only assume that he puts those emotions into his creations.

In Leesburg Virginia Evan, Brian, Joe and the entire team prepared and served up the same new menu items including the new appetizers. Below,  Evan would like to invite everyone to stop by the Bob Evans in your area and try out the new menu items after May 14th.

    Bob-B-Q™ Returns

Bob-B-Q is back again! What is old is new again.  The Baby Back Ribs are slow-roasted, fall-off-the-bone tender, glazed in their award winning Wildfire Sauce.  But unlike traditional restaurants, Bob’s cuts the ribs into single servings so that you don’t have to fight to eat it right.  The Oven-Roasted Chicken is a bone-in chicken breast slathered in Bob Evans Wildfire Sauce, moist and yummy, just the way mom used to make.

    bob-evans-pie1

    Saving the Best For Last

Dessert is no less spectacular as the Red, White & Blueberry Supreme Pie combines cream cheese filling topped by a layer of fresh strawberries and blueberries.  Bob’s will only serve the finest so they wait until the blueberries are “ripe for the picking”.  This pie is served at the end of June just in time for the 4th of July. Also new this year are the Bob Floats. Barq® Root Beer and two scoops of vanilla ice cream, finished with whipped topping and served with extra Root Beer to add as you would like. You can also try Coke and Cherry Coke – Oh My. I tried all three and they were amazing.

All in all Bob Evans has embraced appealing to a younger demographic and young families, while not alienating their core consumers.  Not an easy task but they have achieved it all by creating an anbiance of true “Homestyle Restyle”.  Come one, Come all and enjoy homestyle food restyled just for you!  The team at Bob Evans is delivering great food at tremendous value with 30 meals $5.99 or less.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on Bob Evans.  Are you a long-time fan, have special memories or used the carryout?  Let us know what you have to say. Take a moment and leave a comment. Please stop in your local Bob Evans and tell them TasteCasting sent you.

The TasteCasting Team is Introduced to The Suisse Shop

To kick off the tasting event Herb Jones, the husband of the owner, Darlene Jones, and main wedding cake delivery boy gave us a brief introduction to The Suisse Shop Operation and explained what goes into this week and into the delicious pastries.

So many Tortes So Little Time – What’s Your Favorite?

Walking into the bakery was a treat in itself. When the Tortes were served we were all introduced to flavors like Suisse Almond, Waldorf Red, Amaretto Crown, Lemon Blossom, and Peanut Butter. I had to take a moment and interview a few tasters to find out what their favorites were and ask them what they would recommend to our readers. Find out what Anna-Harper-Hess, her husband and Cheryl Harrison selected as their best picks.

Tell us about your customers and your favorite

I couldn’t pass up a quick interview with Elizabeth Jones, The general manger of the Suisse Shop. I just wanted to know what the regular customers order when the come in and I had to ask what her favorite baked good was.

    TasteCasting Crashers Get A Treat

I also had the opportunity to take a series of pictures while at the event. These pictures will give you a sense of what took place, the delicious tortes we were privileged enough to try. During the tasting the Suisse Shop was closed, but that didn’t stop some passionate former customers from coming on in. Herb welcomed them in with plates full of tortes for them to try. I can now say we’ve had our first TasteCasting Crashers in Columbus.

    img_4637

To see more photos of the event, the Tortes and the TasteCasters and owners in action visit the TasteCasting photo gallery. To see pictures of all the Tortes available at the Suisse Shop visit their torte page and pick your favorite. Saturday, May 2nd is the last day to get your tortes by the slice for $3.50, but, you can order a full torte any time of the year. While I was at the Tasting I ordered my daughter a 10″ Chocolate Torte for her birthday. Best of all it is going to be a “Twilight” decorated cake. This is her new favorite book series. She’s going to love it.

    Special Thanks

From all the TasteCasters we would love to thank The Suisse Shop for inviting us in and treating us to the incredible variety of taste tantalizing tortes.

    Bexley Pizza Plus

    Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | No Comments »

    Deliciously Surprised

Last night we had TasteCasting at Bexley Pizza Plus, located at 2651 E. Main St. I didn’t know what to expect going into this TasteCast — but I was deliciously surprised.

    bexleypizzapluslogo

22 Pizzas and 44 Fresh Toppings

Bexley Pizza Plus offers 22 specialty pizzas and has 44 fresh toppings to choose from. Over the years, Bexley Pizza Plus has earned numerous awards and have become two-time members of the U.S. Pizza Team, competing twice at the World Pizza Championship in Salsamaggiori, Italy. In 2003 they were featured on the Food Network’s World Pizza Challenge.

    Amazing Crust

The thing that really sets their pizza apart from is the crust. The crust has a crunchy base that you would normally associate with a thin crust pizza. But that’s just where the crust starts. There’s also a portion that’s raised – not so much as to be a pan-pizza doughyness, but just a small portion to balance the crunch and provide a sturdy base for the toppings to live on. The flavor was exactly what you’d want it to be – not too yeasty, not at all bland. Rarely have I ever had enough praise for a crust to expend an entire paragraph. But you see? That’s how good it was.

The Ultimate, The Lorraine, and The Primavera

We were served three different pizzas: The Ultimate (two types of pepperoni, two types of mushroom); The Lorraine (bacon, spinach, onions, swiss cheese); and what was essentially the Primavera pizza (artichokes, spinach, portobello mushrooms, onions, green peppers and sun dried tomatoes) – but with a white garlic  sauce instead of red sauce.

The Ultimate came first. Good choice – pepperoni and mushroom is standard pizza fare, so we could use that as a comparison to other pizzas. The pepperoni on top had curled edges and a perfect pepperoni crunch. The one underneath was a moist pepperoni that blended perfectly with the sauce. The mushrooms accented the flavors without overpowering them,  and the texture blended as well.

    ultimate

The Primavera came out next. YUM! The alfredo base blended well with the artichokes, spinach, portobello mushrooms, onions, green peppers and sun dried tomatoes.

    whitepizza

    Finally, the Lorraine.

Oh, man. Words can not express. Bacon, swiss, onion and spinach. Enough said.

    lorraine

I’ll be back for more, Bexley Pizza Plus. Oh yes. I’ll be back for your Pizza Lorraine. And maybe an Ultimate, too. And that’s just for starters.

Columbus Tastecasters Wake Up and Smell The (Crimson Cup) Coffee

    Sunday, March 29th, 2009 | Posted in Columbus | 7 Comments »

    Crimson Headquarters
crimsoncup3Columbus Tastecasters spent 2 ½ hours Saturday morning at the Crimson Cup Coffee Company Headquarters and production facility. We were treated to a rich sensory and educational experience (yes we learn as well as taste) through the world of coffee and coffee house beverages, courtesy of Crimson Cup’s creative team. Founder & President Greg Ubert gave us an overview of the company’s origins, including some insight into how he decided to locate in Columbus. (It’s where he’s from). We heard from coffee guru Armando Escobar, namesake of Armando’s Blend, about the intricacies of the beans, the blends and the brews. A host of other Crimson Cup coffee experts showed us around the plant and pulled back the curtain on a process that takes green coffee beans from around the world and turns them into a dark, steaming cup o’ joe.

    From the Coffee Bar
crimsoncup1We began with the treat of a made-to-order coffee beverage of our choice. Mine was a hot Vanilla Latte, which was smooth, rich with a satisfying sweetness, well-rounded coffee flavor and comforting vanilla essence. Great way to start the day! From there, we toured the facility, learning about the green coffee beans which arrive in burlap sacks from Sumatra, Costa Rica, Brazil and other coffee growing regions around the world. We heard about the factors that identify a superior grade coffee bean and the importance of the bean quality to the finished coffee product. Crimson Cup uses only Class 1 Specialty Grade beans for its coffee, which are in the top 5% of beans grown around the world. The experts at Crimson Cup are continually testing the beans they receive, so that they consistently have a superior product to distribute to their coffeehouse owners and retail outlets. The production area provides space for some Mr. Wizard-like machinery, including roasting, cooling, flavoring and packaging equipment. Efficiency and ingenuity work in harmony to produce a truly amazing variety of coffee products in a compact, well planned space.

    Coffee Cupping
crimsoncup4We tried our hands, or rather our noses and mouths, at coffee tasting the way the experts do it. Cupping, as it is called, is done first with dry ground coffee in a cup, which we smelled and compared with another dissimilar coffee in a separate cup. The two coffees we cupped were a Costa Rican and a Sumatran. Hot water is added to the dry grounds and allowed to steep for about 4 minutes, after which we ‘broke the crust’ on the surface of the coffee and smelled the aroma, which is called the wet cupping. The final step is to clear the grounds floating on top of the cup and taste the coffee. This is done by slurping the coffee, loudly, from the spoon into the mouth, tasting it and then spitting it out into a discard cup. You know how your mother told you not to slurp your soup? Yeah, well its kinda like that. Very interesting, and new way to learn about different types of coffee.

    Frozen Treats
crimsoncup5We were also treated to a few of non-coffee drinks that Crimson Cup has on the menu. The Frozen Hot Chocolate may be an oxymoron of a name, but it is the frozen drink equivalent of comfort food, with a satisfying Dutch cocoa flavor, creamy coolness and sweet whipped cream on top. Rich & fruity, icy cold smoothies have a clean refreshing taste provided by a product which combines natural fruit in a red tea (rooibos) base. Blended with ice, these smoothies come out with a sweet, intensely fruity rush that really wakes up the taste buds. A must try is the Green Apple, which is served in a cup drizzled with caramel syrup. Yup, its like drinking a caramel apple. Have you had your recommended servings of fruit today? These drinks not only taste great, they are gorgeous to behold. Check out our photos for more mouthwatering details.

    Quality is in the cup
The beauty of the Crimson Cup experience is, of course, in the consuming the finished product. And whether you like your roast dark or light, blended or single source beans, flavored or straight-up, Crimson Cup has a coffee to satisfy your craving. Crimson Cup Coffee is served at many fine Columbus area restaurant and coffee houses, Columbus State Community College and The Ohio State University. Katzinger’s Deli

    TasteCasting with Katzingers

    One Of A Kind

You can exit off of I-70E onto Livingston Ave in downtown Columbus, and just on the fringe of German Village at 475 S. Third Street you will find Katzinger’s Deli. (@Katzingers on Twitter) The owner Diane Warren, wearing the Katzinger Soup Shirt above, describes her deli as “an insanely busy, one of kind deli serving specialty food and beverage from around the world.”  As the TasteCasting team started arriving I took a walk around and snapped a few images of this amazing establishment. I felt like I left Columbus and was transported to New York. What an amazing selection of breads, cheeses, wines, and deli meats.

    Five Cheeses and Five Wines

Thirteen members of the TasteCasting team arrived were greeted and even some cases hugged by Diane. I made sure to get a hug from this wonderful lady. Diane had a very special treat in store for the team. She pulled out all the stops. This evening we were treated to five different cheeses, and five complimentary wines.  Diane introduced us to her long time staff member Nova, and the specialty foods manager, Wendy Husinger. We were schooled on the right cheese to have with the right wine so that when the two distinct tastes mixed together it was heavenly.

    The Taste Was Explosive

We started off with an amazing cheese Wendy called La Tur, from Piedmont, Italy and combined it with a Cuvee Rustot Brut also from Piedmont, Italy. We worked our way through five different cheeses and wines. I found my personal favorite when Wendy introduced us to Serena from Lindsay, California. Three young girls with an investment from their family created an amazing cheese. The taste was explosive. The taste was enhanced with a 2007 Mason “Pamelo” Sauvignon Blanc. It was pure genius.

It Was A Tasting Worthy Of Applause

At that point I was pulled away from the tasting for an interview with @Andy10TV to talk about TasteCasting, the team, and the restaurants we’re trying to help with this effort. In the back ground I could hear delighted tasters as they worked their way through the remaining wines and cheeses. Near the end the entire team applauded.

If you have never been to Katzinger’s Deli, you owe it to yourself to make the trip, bring the paper, settle in, enjoy a pickle, a sandwich and make sure you experience the amazing selection of wines, cheeses and breads. Bring friends, make a day of it.

If you want to catch a sneak peak of the entire tasting take a look at the photos in the gallery.

You can also search on the event using the hash tag #KATZ and see the entire online twitter conversation during the event.

    Comment and Forward

Tell us your Katzinger’s Deli Stories. What’s your favorite specialty food? What’s your favorite menu item? Do you love those pickles? All your comments are welcome. Please stop in and say hello to Diane, Nova and Wendy. Let them know you read about them on TasteCasters.com.

Until next time…. Keep it Tasty.

    Lessons Learned

Not only were we treated to dozens of tasty treats Herb Jones, Darlene’s Husband gave us the grand tour of the pastry cases and described in great detail the care, quality and importance of using the freshest ingredients in everything they create. You can view the tasting in it’s entirety at Flickr. We also learned to have the best tasting experience, the butter cream frosting should be allowed to warm to room temperature for a few hours before they are served. He was right. The butter cream frosty was amazing.

    Edible Artistry

In addition to tasting heavenly, Elizabeth Jones, General Manager for the bakery is also one of the many artisans and pastry chefs that create the pastry perfection customers love. I was amazed to see three dimensional cupcakes that looked like animals with no detail spared. There were owls, dogs, flowers, and the twitter bird and fail whale.

    A Tasty Treat

The owner, Eric Ahlteen served up the Judge Powell Panini. It’s made with smoked turkey, chedder, pepperJack, honey mustard, raspberry chipotle sauce, green onion, all on Italian panini bread. I could tell why this was local favorite. It is now my favorite! The sandwich had an incredible taste and just the right amount of kick to it. I was in heaven. You can see the other sandwiches on their menu.

The Music Was A Nice Touch

While were were there we had the great fortune to hear Raina Rose perform songs from album End of Endless False Starts and Rebecca Loebe from the album of the same name. I was lucky enough to buy the albums while there and get my picture taken with the two up and coming folk super stars.
