Bad Billy's Bar in Aspen, Colorado.Bad Billy’s in Aspen pulled out all the stops to make the first TasteCasting in Aspen a success.  We want to thank everyone in the kitchen, behind the bar, and at our table.

Bad Billy’s Restaurant & Bar is located at 508 E. Cooper St. Aspen, Colorado 81611

Bad Billy’s Restaurant & Bar is keeping the Cooper St. space alive.  With great food and good music. The demise of cool casual eateries in Aspen is a well known occurence and is the reason the owners of another great Aspen restaurant stepped in to keep this space open as an affordable bar and restaurant.  There are some things that will be familiar to those that remember the Cooper St. Pier Bar but there are many other new additions that make it a unique new bar and restaurant all its own.  One of those is the constant stream of good live music the other is the food.

The secret recipe is the Kenichi connection, yes the culinary inspiration comes from sister Aspen sushi restaurant Kenichi.  You may be familiar with the other Kenichi Restaurants in Austin, Dallas, and Kona.  No surprise that the Ahi fish tacos are the bomb.  Bad Billy’s  Restaurant & Bar carries the spirit of Kenichi into the kitchen, making fresh, affordable bar food plus some other crafty dishes. I must point out that the name subtley implies the empahsis on the food with the “Restaurant” preceding the “Bar” unlike the more familar pairing of “Bar & Restaurant”

The day was one of those cool sunny, misty/rainy days. We grabbed a table just inside of the patio. It was a great spot to sit that still gave away those great Aspen Mountain views. We were a small group of 5 and shared 7 different plates, starting with the Deep Fried Pickles. View full review of Bad Billy’s Restaurant Aspen and Bar on the EatAspen Blog.

I went to my first meeting of Aspen Tastecasters Sunday, May 31st. We had lunch at Aspen’s Bad Billy’s. I joined Dean, Katrina, and new friends Scott and Sarah for a smorgasbord of all the goodies Bad Billy’s has to offer. They have good bar food like burgers, chicken sandwiches and fish ‘n chips. But what was even better were their noodle bowls, fried pickles and my favorite, the ahi fish tacos.

Aspen’s Tastecasting Team was created by Dean and Katrina of EatAspen.com. The point being to get out and try everything A-town has to offer. Most everyone there was “tweeting” about what they tried, which brought me to the question, to tweet or not to tweet.

I’ve yet to join Twitter, but I’m thinking I may have to create an account so I can give a play by play of the tasty goodness as it happens. I was doubtful of Tweeting, what with Ashton Kutcher being Twitter’s number one fan and all, but I may just give it a shot.

Long story short, I dig the casual bar atmosphere of Bad Billy’s. Yes, it was once Cooper Street Pier and is riddled with memories of sketchy late night stories, but after a good once over they’ve created a more food friendly atmosphere. Plus you still get pool tables up stairs and shuffle board on the main floor.

If you’re in the mood for reasonably priced bar food with a twist, I’d recommend it. I also liked the idea of getting one of everything. I get so stuck on ordering my favorite wherever I go that I forget to try new things. Head out with some friends and do a big “share bear.”

Ahi Fish Tacos – Spicy! and on a won ton taco shell. Side salad also very good.
Fried Pickles – Mmm, mmm, good and a little kick to the dipping sauce.
Tofu/Veggie Noodle Bowl – Great flavor and so refreshing as a bar food choice when you don’t want something fried.
Looking forward to doing more eating and writing – two of my favorite things!
